Notes: Utilizing a crosses electron-beam/molecular-beam collision geometry, mass spectra of C60 and C70 ions have been obtained for an electron impact energy range of 20 eV to 600 eV. These spectra are dominated by singly and doubly ionized species. The intensity of fragment ions is very weak, which is in agreement with previous observations. Ionization efficiency curves for the formation of C60+ and C602+ have also been obtained near their threshold regions. From these curves, appearance energies (AE) of these ions have been derived. The AE for C60+ is found to be 7.8±0.3 eV, which agrees well with previous measurements. However, our value of 16.4±0.3 eV for the formation of C602+ is much lower than the value of 19.0±0.3 eV obtained by photo-ionization techniques.

Notes: Hydrothermal weathering of the peroxide vulcanized specimens of silicone rubber, EPDM rubber, and their 50 : 50 blend carried out for various durations at different temperatures reveals that silicone is very susceptible to degradation. For example, the modulus, the strength, and the elongation at break consistently fall with aging period. For 72 h of aging at 210°C, it practically loses its rubberiness (elongation 〈 50%); while EPDM and the 50 : 50 blend maintain more than 100% elongation at break during the times and temperatures. While hydrolytic chain scission is the main degradation mechanism for silicone, EPDM undergoes a predominantly crosslinking reaction. The kinetics study reveals that the better retention of properties of the blends over silicone is due to an increase in the activation energy of degradation in the presence of EPDM rubber, and this protection effect is higher in liquid-phase weathering than in steam-phase weathering. © 1994 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Notes: In the study of smoke suppressants the measurement of gross amount of smoke from a given sample is essential. However, smoke being a complex phenomenon, its measurement with optical methods presents practical problems. The paper describes a flow system for the measurement of smoke production. Effectiveness of smoke-suppressant formulations for poly(vinyl chloride) as assessed in a flow system is reported. Results of experiments conducted to probe and establish the capability of smoke measurement in a flow system using a helium-neon laser are discussed.

Notes: Polarographic behaviour of Ni(II), Co(II), Mn(II) and Zn(II) has been studied in varying concentration of formamide in aqueous medium with Sodium Perchlorate as the indifferent electrolyte. A decrease in diffusion current, “id” and diffusion coefficient, “D” is noticed. The ionic radius, “r” is found increasing with increasing percentage of formamide. These three factors coupled with inconstancy in “idη1/2” show that solvation is of major importance in influencing the various parameters of the ILKOVIC Equation. Except for Mn(II) all reductions are found to be of irreversible character. “αna” and rate constant “Kf,h°” have been calculated.

Notes: The reactions of stabilized carbonium ions of setoglaucin, methyl violet, and ethyl violet with cyanide ions are largely catalyzed by the cationic micelles of cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) in aqueous media. Added counterions (anions in this case) have strong inhibitory effects on the CTAB-catalyzed reactions in the following order: N3- 〉 NO3- 〉 Br- 〉 Cl- 〉 F- 〉 no salt. The inhibitory effects of the counterions have been attributed to the exchange between added anions and reagent (CN-) in the micellar media. The data have been analyzed by the model schemes, and mathematical formulations were developed. Various parameters associated with the exchange process, such as equilibrium exchange constant, number of surfactant molecules per substrate molecule, number of added anions, and a factor related to the binding of additives to the catalytic micellar aggregates, have been evaluated.

Notes: The E- and Z-5-deuterioadamantan-2-ols have been synthesized by an unambiguous route. The 13C NMR spectra show the familiar 1:1:1 splitting of one of the C-5 or C-7 signals, thus allowing a definite assignment of the δ-atoms to be made. This assignment is in accord with the conclusion of Duddeck and Islam. Revised assignments are offered for the reported configurations of the 5-bromo- and -chloro-adamantan-2-ols, and several unusual remote deuterium isotope shifts are reported.
