Notes: Two-dimensional numerical simulations of laminar natural convection in a partially cooled, differentially heated inclined cavities are performed. One of the cavity walls is entirely heated to a uniformly high temperature (heat source) while the opposite wall is partially cooled to a lower temperature (heat sink). The remaining walls are adiabatic. The tilt angle of the cavity is varied from 0° (heated from left) to -90° (heated from top). The fast false implicit transient scheme (FITS) algorithm, developed earlier by the same authors, is modified to solve the derived variables vorticity-streamfunction formulation. The effects of aspect ratio (AR), sink-source ratio and tilt angle on the average Nusselt number are examined through a parametric study; solutions are obtained for two Grashof numbers, 105 and 107. Flow patterns and isotherms are used to investigate the heat transfer and fluid flow mechanisms inside the cavity. © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Notes: The application of the high precision triangular plate bending element to problems with curved boundaries is considered. Appropriate edge conditions for nodal points on these boundaries are derived. The error inherent in representing the shape of a curved boundary by a series of straight segments is found to be the limiting factor on accuracy, while the effect of approximations in the actual boundary conditions is minor. To overcome the first type of error, the high precision element is modified to include one curved edge. Substantial improvements in accuracy are obtained, as demonstrated in example calculations for circular and elliptical plates.

Notes: A plasticity theory for porous metals is proposed. A simple model of a porous materials is analysed by the finite element method. Small strain elastic-plastic analysis provides stress-strain curves, yield stressed and incremental plastic strain vectors for different void ratios. An assessment is made of an existing yield criterion for porous metals. A modified yield criterion and plastic potential function and, consequently, different plasticity equations are given. Reasonable agreement is obtained between the present numerical results and previous results in the literature.

Notes: This paper presents an improved approximation technique for gradient based approximation methods of mathematical programming. The proposed technique prevents oscillations of the sequence of approximate solutions in the optimization process efficiently and preserves the relatively simple form of the approximating functions. The improvement is achieved by adding an appropriate convex term to each conventional approximating function. The theory is illustrated with several numerical examples. © 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Notes: A commonly adopted procedure to solve a structural optimum design problem is to improve the design iteratively by solving a sequence of simpler problems, where each of these is obtained as an approximation of the original problem. Considering structures with linear response, this procedure works very well and can be implemented quite straightforwardly. However, considering structures with non-linear response, the situation is more sophisticated since structural stability properties have to be taken into account. The paper presents an approach to optimal design of statically loaded structures with non-linear response. It is proposed to replace the original problem with a sequence of similar problems from which corresponding approximate problems can easily be obtained. These similar problems additionally contain an estimation of the critical load constraint while other constraints are imposed at some properly chosen load level, which is lower or at most equal to the critical load level. By this approach, the structural stability requirements are taken into account in an effective manner. The efficiency is illustrated with several examples involving kinematic as well as material non-linear effects.

Notes: The paper provides an extension to the one-dimensional TLM diffusion model. The extended diffusion node presented here models the exact transport equation with diffusion drift and recombination of charge carriers in semiconductors. A general algorithm for providing a numerical solution to the transport phenomena is also presented here. The analytical solution for infinitely long semiconductors is compared with the TLM numerical results.

Notes: The method of effective penetration depth is used to produce a novel scalar or polarized finite difference approach for the solution of optical rib waveguide field problems. The new method is quicker than previous finite difference approaches and requires less computer memory. Propagation constant values are presented for a range of semiconductor rib waveguides and are found to be indistinguishable from benchmark results produced using earlier methods of analysis. A simple polarization correction formula recently derived is confirmed by utilizing the good accuracy of these results. This enables discussion of the relationship between quasi-TE, quasi-TM and scalar modes, and a further substantial reduction of the cpu time.
