The Chemical Physiology of the Plant AlkaloidsWhen plants with an alkaloid content are grafted to plants not containing alkaloids, so that an intensive exchange of materials can take place between the two, it can be proved that the alkaloid synthesis takes place mainly in the youngest parts of the roots and to a lesser extent in growing tissues of the sprouts. The alkaloids which flow upwards from the roots can be subject to secondary transformations in the sprouts. Alkaloids are only an analytically easily comprehensible example of complicated chemical root-sprout relationships. There can be no question of the „beredity“ of a material characteristic forced upon a sprout by a root of a different type. The biological importance of the alkaloid is disscussed.

Werden alkaloidführende Pflanzen mit alkaloidfreien durch Pfropfung vereinigt, so daß ein intensiver Stoffaustausch zwischen den Partnern stattfinden kann, läßt sich beweisen, daß die Alkaloidsynthese in erster Linie in den jüngsten Teilen der Wurzel, in geringerem Ausmaß in wachsenden Geweben des Sprosses abläuft. Die aus der Wurzel nach oben strömenden Alkaloide können im Sproß sekundären Verwandlungen unterliegen. Alkaloide sind nur ein analytisch leicht faßbarer Anteil komplizierter chemischer Wurzel-Sproß-Beziehungen. Eine „Erblichkeit“ eines dem Sproß von einer artfremden Wurzel neu aufgezwungenen stofflichen Merkmals läßt sich nicht nachweisen. Die biologische Bedeutung der Alkaloide wird besprochen.
