Notes: Sorption and permeation of CO2 were investigated by using synthetic polymer membranes having pyridine moiety or pyridine-Cu(II) complex group as a fixed carrier. The solubility data for CO2 were interpreted by the dual sorption model, Henry's law plus Langmuir-type adsorption. The permeation results of CO2 through the present membranes containing pyridine moiety were analyzed in terms of the partial immobilization model, while the solubilities and permeablities of O2 and N2 obeyed Henry's law. Permselectivity of the present membrane for CO2 was achieved. These results were explained by the acid-base interaction between CO2 molecules and fixed carrier in the present membrane.

Notes: The addition reaction of α,β-unsaturated carboxylic acids to polydienes, such as cis-1,4-polybutadiene, 1,2-polybutadiene, and polypentenamer, was investigated in the presence of acid catalysts in order to obtain photosensitive rubbers. The structures of products obtained were identified as cyclized polydiene rubbers having pendent α,β-unsaturated carboxylate groups. The amount of the incorporated substrates increased up to the maximum of around 20 mole %, and the amount of the residual unsaturated groups in the polymer backbone decreased because of cyclization of the double bond. The products had two glass transition temperatures. These glass transition temperatures were identified as follows: a lower transition, owing to the original polydiene segment where the incorporated carboxylate groups were located; and a higher one, owing to cyclic segment. These two thermal transitions on the polymer backbone indicate that the cyclic structure exists as a block segment in the polymer and the carboxylate group is incorporated at random in a polydiene structure. The synthetic condition needed to obtain a desired amount of the incorporated substrate and the degree of the cyclization of polydienes and polypentenamer were investigated.

Notes: Membranes derived from copolymers having N-hydroxyalkyl groups were prepared, and the active transport for anions through the membranes was investigated in the presence of a crown ether which suppresses the diffusion of counter ions. The maximum of the concentrated anions in one side cell was maintained for a long time by the addition of a crown ether in the cell, and a concentration of anions up to 50% was attained. Various N-hydroxyalkyl groups of different lengths were incorporated in copolymers with styrene, and the transport for anions was investigated in order to establish the carrier mechanism of the tautomeric functional groups. Longer-length alkyl moieties bearing N-hydroxyalkyl groups led to a decrease in the active transport for anions, which supports a carrier mechanism for the membranes.

Notes: Various polyamides and polyesters having different numbers of methylene groups in their repeating units have been synthesized and their blood compatibilities have been evaluated in terms of the adhesion behavior of blood platelets on the surface of these condensation polymers by a micro-sphere-column method. The number of methylene groups in the repeating units of polyamides and polyesters influenced the adhesion behavior of platelets and there was an optimum number of methylene groups each in polyamides and polyesters. Poly(hexamethylene terephthalamide) and poly(pentamethylene terephthalate) adsorbed platelets in the smallest number in the polyamide and polyester series, respectively. Blood platelets were adsorbed on polyamides in smaller numbers than on corresponding polyesters. It was found that the platelet adhesion on the surface of polyamides and polyesters was closely related to their crystallinities and the number of the adsorbed platelets decreased linearly with increasing their relative crystallinity.

Notes: Photosensitivity of cyclized polydienes such as cis-1,4-polybutadiene, 1,2-polybutadiene, and polypentenamer having pendent cinnamate groups has been studied in terms of the influence of polymer structure. The photosensitivity, which was based on the photodimerization of cinnamate groups in these polymers, was greatly affected by the mobility of the cinnamate groups. The observed rates (kobsu) could be estimated by using the reciprocal of the difference between an irradiated temperature (T) and a standardized temperature (Tg - 50), at which the free volume of the polymer could be considered as zero by taking the glass transition temperature (Tg) of the polymer as a standard. Furthermore, the photosensitivity of the cyclized rubber decreased with an increase in the amount of the cyclized units in the polymer. The overall rate of the photodimerization did not linearly correlate with the amount of the incorporated cinnamate groups, because the glass transition temperature of the cyclized rubber was not dependent on the small amount of the incorporated cinnamate groups, but on the amount of the cyclized units in the polymer. Theoretical treatment of the photodimerization reaction in the solid polymer was carried out, which was consistent with experimental results.

Notes: Various polyamides having a different density of hydrogen bonding, of hydrophilic character, and containing ionic groups have been synthesized and their blood compatibilities were evaluated in terms of the adhesion behavior of blood platelets on polyamide by the microsphere column method. Polyamides containing anionically charged groups such as carboxylate or sulfonate groups adsorbed fewer blood platelets than those with undissociated carboxylate groups. Polyamides having thioether groups adsorbed fewer platelets than those having ether groups. Introduction of a rigid piperazine unit caused an increase in platelet adhesion.

Notes: Homopolyamides and copolyamides containing a variety of reactive and/or stabilizing groups, such as double bonds, epoxy groups, or naphthalene moieties, were synthesized using 3-amino perhydroazepine (APA) as a diamine monomer. These polymers were evaluated as electron beam (EB) resists, in order to investigate the relationship between EB sensitivity and chemical structure of the polyamides. It was found that polyamides containing double bonds were easily crosslinked by the EB exposure and that the sensitivity of a polyamide containing double bonds in the side chain was higher than that of a polyamide containing double bonds in the main chain. The sensitivity of a polyamide containing epoxy groups was lower than that of the above. Copolymer from APA, 77 mol % of trans-3-hexenedioyl chloride (HC) and 23 mol % of 2,6-naphthalenedioyl chloride (NC) had the same EB sensitivity as that of the homopolymer from APA and HC. The polyamides had excellent dry etching durability and were adaptable to EB lithography.

Notes: Polyamides having epoxy groups and their ring-opening derivatives were prepared and characterized, and some of their properties were investigated. Reaction conditions for the low-temperature polycondensation of cis-2,3-epoxysuccinyl chloride (ESC) with aromatic diamines and the interfacial copolycondensation of ESC and adipyl chloride (AC) with aromatic diamines were established to obtain a high molecular weight polyamide having epoxy groups. In addition, the ring-opening reactions of the epoxy groups in the polyamides were carried out with various amines in order to obtain polyamides having hydrophilic pendent groups such as amino and hydroxyl. It was found that the polyamides prepared by ring-opening reaction of the epoxy group with ethylenediamine (EDA) or ethanolamine (EA) had a higher affinity for moisture than those with hexamethylenediamine (HMD) or n-butylamine (n-BA), which might be ascribed to the distance of hydrophilic groups from the polyamide chain. Those polyamides having hydrophilic pendent groups decomposed upon heating at less than 200°C.

Notes: Polymers having chloroacetate groups were prepared by addition reaction of various chloroacetic acids, such as mono-, di-, and trichloroacetic acids, to cis-1,4-polybutadiene under nitrogen atmosphere for obtaining photosensitive rubbers. The structure of products obtained was identified as a cyclized polybutadiene having pendent chloroacetate groups. The amount of the incorporated substituent increased up to the maximum of around 20 mol %, and the amount of the residual unsaturated groups in the polymer backbone decreased due to the cyclization of the double bond. Chloroacetylated polybutadiene had higher photocrosslinkability by UV irradiation than chloroacetylated polybutadiene had higher photocrosslinkability by UV irradiation than chloroacetylated chitosan or PVA owing to the high reactivity of the chloroacetate groups and the double bonds in the polymer. The photosensitivity depends both on the amount of the incorporated chloroacetate groups and the residual double bonds in the polymer and also depends on the glass transition temperature (Tg) of the polymer, and the dependence of the crosslinking reaction on Tg was interpreted to be due to diffusion controlled reaction between excited dichloroacetate groups and olefinic groups in the polymer.

Notes: Polyamides containing double bonds or epoxy groups were synthesized and evaluated as electron beam (EB) resists, in order to find the relationship between electron beam sensitivity and chemical structure of the polyamides. It was found that polyamides containing double bonds, which have good solubility, are easily crosslinked by the electron beam exposure. The sensitivity of a polyamide with 70 mol% of the repeat units containing double bonds was equivalent to that of a 100% unsaturated polyamide which contained double bonds of 100% molar ratios, and thus it is not necessary that the polyamide be a homopolymer of unsaturated repeating units. The polyamides have good physical properties, and are adaptable to dry etching processes.
