Summary The preparation of C18 stationary phases for the separation of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons has been investigated. The effect of the pore size of the silica, the endcapping procedure, the amount of reagent and the amount of water in the preparation was also examined. A good correlation between surface coverage and capacity factor was found. The maximum surface coverage available with our preparation method lies between 3–3.5 μmol m−2, slightly depending on the pore size of the silica. Oligomeric not endcapped C18 packing materials are optimal for the separation of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons.
