Abstract Large-scale application of superconducting RF cavities to electron accelerators is in progress at many laboratories around the world. These accelerators will provide high-energy beams for elementary particle physics research, medium-energy beams for nuclear physics research, and low-energy beams for free-electron lasers. Niobium is the superconductor of choice, and its performance is subject to further advances, opening new applications for the next generation of accelerators. Extensive RF characterization of high-T c superconductors (HTSC) is already under way. From the results so far, it is clear that substantial improvements in the RF properties will be needed before HTSC can compete with Nb or even with copper at room temperature. New measurements on crystalline YBaCuO suggest that these difficulties are not intrinsic, providing a strong incentive for continued efforts to improve material preparation.
