Notes: Twenty polystyrene-g-gelatin samples were synthesised using Ce(IV) as the free radical initiator in order to make biodegradable polystyrene. Recovery of polystyrene from acid hydrolysis of the grafted sample and the appearance of new bands of gelatin at 3479 cm-1, 3235 cm-1, 1060 cm-1 and 1370 cm-1 in the IR spectrum of the grafted polystyrene sample constituted evidence of grafting, which was substantiated by evidence from 13C NMR. Thermal studies, X-ray diffraction analysis, spectral analysis, viscosity measurements, and swelling behaviour characterised the potentially biodegradable polystyrene samples. A plausible mechanism for grafting and the probable structure of the grafted sample are suggested. Degradation studies are in progress.

Notes: Novel polyhydrazides having inherent viscosities in the range of 0.24-0.38 dL g-1 were prepared by polymerizing a series of hydrazides with different diacid chlorides in polar aprotic solvents. These polymers display a wide range of solubility in a number of solvents. They start decomposing at about 200°C in air. Results of differential thermal and thermogravimetric analysis show that a steep weight loss takes place mainly in the range of 300-440°C.
