Notes: Abstract A probe-beam deflection technique was employed to investigate the evolution of shock waves generated during drilling processes of optical materials by a high repetition rate copper vapor laser. Experimental observations were analyzed by using a theoretical model of shock wave expansion which also furnished quantitative information on the main physical functions associated to laser-induced acoustic phenomena.

Notes: Abstract The kinetics of cavitation and associated photo-mechanical effects induced by underwater pulsed-laser irradiation of solid targets has been studied experimentally and analyzed with theoretical methods. A xenon-chloride excimer laser of 150 ns pulse duration has been utilized to produce ablation and local photofragmentation of artificial samples of hard tissues at fluences of 12–24 J/cm2. The evolution of pressure wave and cavitation formations developing in the liquid from the target surface after laser irradiation has been observed with a time-resolved imaging technique employing a pump-probe laser arrangement. The analysis of experimental results has been performed by using the theoretical model of “point explosion” that has been successfully applied to fit the cavitation kinetics, providing also quantitative information on the energy transfer during photo-acoustic interactions.

Notes: Abstract An improved version of the auto-prepulse excitation scheme for long-pulse operation of the XeCl excimer laser is reported. A pulsed reverse bias on the small peaking capacitance allows efficient (1.7%) operation at 100 mJ output level with a charge voltage limited to 5–7 kV. Analogies and differences with other long-pulse operation schemes are also discussed.

Notes: Abstract Early and significant influences on soil physical properties are expected in temperate agroforests as a consequence of various soil and/or understory management practises. Soil physical characteristics were studied in an agroforestry trial of common walnut (Juglans regia L.) set up on a volcanic soil in central Italy, where clean cultivation, polyethylene mulching along tree rows and intercropping of walnut with alfalfa (Medicago sativa L.) were tested. Soil total porosity, size distribution and morphology of pores, and available water were evaluated during the second and the fourth growing season of the plantation to determine the possible influence and duration of the treatments on soil physical properties. In the first sampling the total porosity was two to three times greater than in the second one and no significant differences were found between treatments. Seasonal variation in total porosity was observed, with a maximum in summer. All dimensional classes of pores 〉 50 μm were well represented, thus indicating an adequate soil structure. In the fourth growing season total porosity and pore size distribution were very similar in clean cultivation and mulching so that the mulching effect on the structural characteristics of this soil was equivalent to that of repeated rototilling in clean-cultivated plots. Moreover, mulching stimulated more biological activity, resulting in a higher proportion of rounded pores. Alfalfa roots created a more homogeneous environment to a depth of 35 cm, with a greater presence of elongated pores in the range 50--500 μm that could make movement of water easier. Most of the water retained was unavailable for plants, so that competition between walnuts and alfalfa took place and could be associated with the lower stem growth of intercropped walnuts.

Notes: Abstract Wideband frequency conversion of copper vapour laser radiation has been achieved by stimulated Raman scattering in multimode silica fibres. Up to nine Stokes' orders have been generated in the 511 to 649 nm spectral region with a conversion efficiency greater than 90% of the fibre output. Four-wave mixing processes involving laser and Stokes' lines have also been observed.

Notes: Summary There are very few data available on the relationship between sporting activities, endocrine levels and changes in anthropometric measurements during growth. In order to study these relationships, we have made measurements of growth, changes in physical conformation and the plasma levels of several hormones [cortisol, dehydroepiandrosterone sulphate (DHEA-S), testosterone, growth hormone, somatomedin C, insulin, glycaemia and haemoglobin A1C] in 175 boys, aged 10–16 years, who have played football at a competitive level and in 224 boys, severing as controls, who have never performed sporting activities regularly. The football players were divided into prepubertal and pubertal subjects (10–11.99 years, 12–13.99 years and 14–16 years, chronological and bone age groups). Our results showed no significant differences in the growth indices between prepubertal athletes and controls, but the plasma level of DHEA-S was significantly higher (P〈0.05) in the athletes. Pubertal football players, however, were significantly taller than the control subjects, particularly at 14–16 years chronological age. There were no such significant differences when bone age was considered. The pubertal football players were also more advanced in all biological indices of maturity, i.e. pubic hair, testicular volume and bone age. The increase in DHEA-S in pubertal football players, already seen in prepubertals, was also combined with a significant increase in testosterone, growth hormone and cortisol levels. Thus, in football players the DHEA-S level is already higher during prepuberty. This increase thus precedes all other indices of growth and maturation associated with puberty. We hypothesize that, while not excluding the possible influence of selection, as ours is a cross-sectional study, adrenal hyperactivity may be mainly responsible for the earlier onset of pubertal growth and maturity in exercising males.
