    Notes: For the first time the growth of polycrystalline CdS films by the gradient recrystallization and growth technique on silicon, quartz, and glass substrates is reported. X-ray diffraction, photoluminescence, scanning electron microscopy, and microprobe studies were used for their characterization. This preliminary study shows that this technique is suitable for growing CdS films with larger grain sizes than those obtained by conventional evaporation methods. The photoluminescence studies show that the emission spectrum of the films deposited on silicon is comparable to single-crystal CdS.

    Notes: Amorphous Ge2Sb2Te5 films were prepared by rf sputtering from the bulk alloy. Their electrical and optical properties were analyzed using impedance and optical transmission measurements as a function of temperature. From this analysis, it is found that the glass transition temperature of the as-prepared amorphous films is of about 100 °C. This result is confirmed by calorimetric measurements. Impedance and optical measurements in films measured at temperatures between the glass transition and the crystallization temperatures show the appearance of the nucleation centers. Using models for two-phase materials, the electrical parameters of the crystalline and amorphous phases were estimated and related with structural parameters of the samples. © 2002 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: The optical transmittance of Ge:Sb:Te evaporated thin film alloys with different compositions was measured in the wavelength range from 2.5 to 34 μm. The as-deposited films with an amorphous structure were thermally crystallized to achieve the two known crystalline phases: the fcc and the hexagonal at higher treatment temperatures. There are drastic changes in the transmittance spectra of samples with different structural phase, which reflects the differences in their optical constants. For amorphous films, only the frequency independent term in Drude's formula is required to properly describe their transmittance spectra. For samples in the hexagonal and the fcc structures, the transmittance spectra show a metallic and semimetallic behavior, respectively; therefore, the full Drude expression has been used as the general dispersion relation for the optical constants of the films. The electrical conductivity deduced from the Drude expression shows a dependence on Sb concentration in good agreement with previously reported values measured on bulk single crystals. Furthermore, the n and k spectra obtained in the measured infrared range are in good agreement with the values in the visible-UV region, previously measured using spectroscopic ellipsometry. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: We present the design and construction of a diagnostic system of the plasma parameters by means of electrical probes. The novelties of the system are the protection provided to the electrical probe with a guard, thus minimizing the probe deterioration, and the automatic positioning device associated with the probe. This system consists of: the electronic instrumentation for the electrical probe bias; two control systems, one for the guard's motion, and another for the positioning of the electrical probe; and finally, a data acquisition system. During the system's operation, and based on the data measured by the electrical probe at different positions where the data acquisition is carried out, the following parameters are available in real time: floating voltage, ion saturation voltage and current, electron temperature, and plasma's voltage and density. The motion of the guard and electrical probe array is programmable up to a maximum speed of 1 cm/s, and the time required for the bias of the probe, the measuring and storing of the signal, and the generation of an ASCII data file is approximately 10 ms. With this system, the duty cycle of the probe is extended due to the shielding provided by the guard. Likewise, the reduction of deposits of spurious materials on the probe results in a more reliable measuring process of the plasma parameters. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: In this article, we present a new CO2 analyzer which can be used for monitoring respiration rates in organic material. To demonstrate the potentiality of the analyzer, CO2 evolution of soil samples collected from three different edaphic environments were measured. The results obtained with this compact CO2 analyzer were compared with those carried out simultaneously using the chemical method, and the correlation between them has been established. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: . Parasitic amebas propagate among hosts through cysts, the resistant forms in their life cycle. In spite of their key role in infection, little is known about the encystation process and the mechanisms involved in reaching this stage. Two features drastically affected by encystation are motility and cell shape, both of which are determined by the cytoskeleton, composed mainly of actin in these organisms. Therefore, we studied the occurrence and relative levels of actin and actin synthesis during encystation of Entamoeba invadens. Using a cDNA actin probe obtained from a library of E. histolytica and a monoclonal antibody against actin, we found that, while the total actin levels sharply decrease as encystation proceeds, the levels of actin mRNA are reduced only in mature cysts. Moreover, actin synthesis does not take place in precysts and the later stages of cyst formation. In contrast, the levels of other proteins remain stable in trophozoites, precysts and cysts, and stage specific peptides are actively synthesized in precysts. The results indicate that encystation is accompanied by a preferential down-regulation of actin synthesis and a decrease in actin levels. The reorganization of the cytoskeleton occurring as trophozoites transform into round, quiescent cells, could be a regulatory factor in the observed changes.

    Notes: The subsurface geometry of the Sebastián Vizcaíno Basin is obtained from the 2D inversion of gravity data, constrained by a density-versus-depth relationship derived from an oil exploration deep hole. The basin accumulated a thick pile of marine sediments that evolved in the fore-arc region of the compressive margin prevalent along western North America during Mesozoic and Tertiary times. Our interpretation indicates that the sedimentary infill in the Sebastián Vizcaíno Basin reaches a maximum thickness of about 4 km at the centre of a relatively symmetric basin. At the location of the Suaro-1 hole, the depth to the basement derived from this work agrees with the drilled interface between calcareous and volcaniclastic members of the Alisitos Formation. A sensitivity analysis strongly suggests that the assumed density function leads to a nearly unique solution of the inverse problem.

    Notes: Atomic force microscopy has been used to study the surface irregularities of hydrogenated and unhydrogenated carbon films grown by rf-powered glow discharge and dc-magnetron sputtering, respectively. In general films produced with the latter technique have rougher surfaces. In glow discharge produced samples, roughness can be reduced by increasing rf power during deposition. In sputtered films surface roughness is reduced by either lowering substrate temperature or reducing the power density during deposition. The relation between the microstructure and the crystalline state was done using Raman scattering.
