Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung Wir betrachten den gedämpftenV-Zyklus für die Wavelet-Variante der “Frequenzzerlegungs-Multigridmethode” von Hackbusch [Numer. Math.56, 229–245 (1989)].
Notes: Abstract The dampedV-cycle of the wavelet variation of the “Frequency decomposition multigrid method” of Hackbusch [Numer. Math.56, pp. 229–245 (1989)] is considered. It is shown that the convergence speed under sufficient damping is not affected by the presence of anisotropy but still depends on the number of levels. Our analysis is based on properties of wavelet packets which are supplied and proved. Numerical approximations to the speed of convergence illustrate the theoretical results.

Notes: Abstract Cancerous ‘chronic meningitis’ may be related to subarachnoid space involvement by solid tumors, hematologic malignancies or rarely intraparenchymatous gliomas. Primary leptomeningeal gliomatosis is a rare condition that is attributed to malignant transformation of heterotopic neuroglial tissue. We discuss the clinical and biological features of a patient who died with the diffuse form of primary leptomeningeal gliomatosis (PDLG). A literature search shows that a one to two months long non-specific prodromal phase followed by a fluctuating neurologic downhill course is suggestive of this disease. Cerebro-spinal fluid (CSF) cytology has been diagnostic in only 1 of 8 reported cases. Recent technical progress, including the use of GFAP (glial fibrillary acidic protein) directed antibody, may enhance the sensitivity of CSF cytologies. Diagnosis may require repeated cerebral biopsies, because the hemispheric lesions are often separated by normal tissue. PDLG must be added to the large differential diagnosis of ‘chronic meningitis’.

Notes: Abstract This study was based on a survey of a representative sample of 1000 Austrians who were questioned about their sleep and dream behavior. About two-thirds of the respondents reported that they generally recalled at least one dream per month. Dream recall frequency decreased with advancing age, but did not differ between men and women. Fifty-five percent of the respondents characterized the affective content of their dreams: 29% reported neutral, 20% positive, and 6% negative dreams. Four percent of the sample reported suffering from nightmares. These respondents more frequently reported snoring, interrupted sleep, daytime somnolence, anxiety and nervousness, depression, high dream recall, recurrent dreams, and dreaming in color. Twenty-six percent of the total sample reported that sometimes they realized during their dreams that they were dreaming. These respondents more frequently reported family problems, high dream recall, positive dream content, recurrent dreams, dreaming in color, and nightmares.
