    Notes: Automated guided vehicle (AGV) systems provide the flexibility and integration required for flexible manufacturing systems. Previous AGV system studies have attempted to reduce the controlling complexities commonly encountered in these systems. However, this has not been accomplished without additional resources (e.g., automated guided vehicles) and lower system flexibility. The primary objective of this study is to compare the performance of AGV system configurations that reduce controlling and modification complexities (i.e., tandem configurations) to traditional AGV system configuration. Three AGV system configurations were tested under 16 experimental conditions. Performance metrics considered were AGV utilization, mean flowtime, mean tardiness, and percent tardy. The results of this study extend the findings of the previous studies in demonstrating the viability of tandem configurations, in that the tandem configurations match the performance of traditional configuration across all performance metrics, without sacrificing ease of control and system flexibility. Finally, the cost tradeoffs inherent in selecting a particular configuration are discussed.

    Notes: Instrumental color measurements were investigated as a method of assessing ration quality after long term storage. Six items were stored at five temperatures from 4 to 60C and withdrawn after 7, 31, 91, 182, 365, 730 and 1095 days. They were assessed for color (CIELAB L*a*b* values, hue angle and chroma), consumer acceptance, and attribute ratings. Color variables varied consistently for only applesauce and cheese spread. L* values were investigated to measure acceptability. Consumer acceptance ratings were divided into two equal sets. The first was used to determine the relationship between the mean score and L* value, then to predict acceptability. Predictions were compared to the second set of scores and type 1 and 2 error rates determined. Although error rates were high by usual statistical standards, they were equal to or lower (although not significantly different) than those based on the mean consumer acceptance score.

    Notes: Corn meal extrudates were produced using process conditions designed to obtain various product structures. Extrudates were infused with a particle-containing, high melting point lipid suspension, a process used to produce calorically dense components for military rations. Image analysis was used to estimate the degree of particle penetration into the extruded matrices and determine cell size distributions. Infusion uniformity was correlated with structural attributes, such as density, expansion, and average cell size.

    Notes: Average consumer-acceptance scores on the military ration called the Meal, Ready-to-Eat, at four temperatures and storage times through 60 months fitted an Arrhenius-like mathematical model which estimated the dependence of average score on storage time and temperature as well as the effect of temperature on shelf life. Results are presented for individual items and for the most important classes of items.

    Notes: This paper presents a new mathematical analysis of the inoculated pack method for determining the effectiveness of radappertization (radiation-sterilization) of canned food. A general theory is developed which makes it clear that two interrelated distribution functions, the probability of organism death and the probability of can sterilization, play important parts in the process. A critique is given of the Schmidt-Nank method for calculating the 12D dose, and modifications of both the experimental design and data analysis are suggested. Two examples are worked out, one illustrating the use of the suggested method, the other using the theory and an experiment on canned ham to show that the mode of organism death is unlikely to be exponential.
