Notes: Conclusions The East Institute of Refractories has developed an effective method of using oxygen for burning the fuel in rotary kilns used for calcining refractory raw materials. The essence of the method consists in feeding oxygen and gas into the combustion chamber in the form of separate jets flowing from the nozzles at sonic and supersonic velocities and aimed at the material being fired. The proposed method is being introduced on rotary kilns for firing dolomite at the Chelyabinsk Factory, as a result of which there has been a big boost in the furnace output, a fall in the specific fuel consumption and dust removal, and also improvements in the quality of the fired powder. The method may be recommended for rotary kilns for firing magnesite and other forms of raw material.

Notes: Conclusions In chemical composition the experimental chrome-spinel-periclase refractories are characterized by a high degree of purity. The total content of impurity oxides of silicon, calcium, and iron does not exceed 2%. The parts possess increased density, porosity, and slag resistance but a lower heat resistance than the imported refractories with a silica content of 0.5%. Comparative tests of the experimental chrome-spinel-periclase parts (area of about 0.5 m2) and the imported refractories with a silica content of 0.5% in the slag belt of an ASEA-SKF installation ladle showed similar lives of them. For a final experimental test it would be desirable to produce a larger experimental production lot of the chrome-spinel-periclase refractories and to test them in the slag zone of ASEA-SKF ladles.

Notes: Conclusions The petrochemical method makes it possible to predict the minimum quantity of MgO addition to obtain high quality forsterite-spinel refractory parts form carbon ferrochrome slag. To neutralize the negative influence of low-melting compounds on refractoriness it is necessary to add not less than 9.0% MgO to Serov Ferroalloy Plant slag and not less than 10% MgO to Chelyabinsk Electrometallurigical Combine slag.

Notes: Conclusions The rate of decarbonization in magnesite critically depends on the grain size. With an increase in the grain size the process rate diminishes, especially when we change from particles measuring less than 10 mm to particles measuring 30 mm. The retardation in the decarbonization rate is due to the slower heating of the large fractions of magnesite, the formation of low conducting layers, hindering access of heat to the center of the grains, and the enhanced concentration of CO2 in the gas phase. The relationship between the time for complete decarbonization and the grain size of the magnesite is expressed by a parabolic equation, the numerical coefficients for which vary with temperature change.

Notes: Conclusions Additions in the form of TiO2 or ZrO2 are recommended in order to obtain effective sintering of the chemically synthesized composite MgO + MgCr2O4, obtained from the thermal decomposition of magnesium chromate. The articles prepared in accordance with the new process based on dense-sintered clinker have excellent physicochemical properties. The experimental tap hole blocks made using the clinker process showed 1.5 times greater resistance than that of fused periclase blocks when tested at the Nizhnetagilsk Metallurgical Combine.

Notes: Conclusions On the basis of the investigations of the quality of dolomite from all the regions of the USSR, we established that the most promising for the production of dolomite tarred refractories with a ceramic bond are Tkvarchel'sk, Bosninsk, Kuzinsk, and Kvarkensk, which are typically of high purity. We developed basic parameters for the production of dolomite refractories, including the production of densely sintered dolomite clinker, pressing of the articles at 100 MPa, with anhydrous paraffin binder, firing of the goods at 1600°C, followed by impregnation with tar. With regard to all the physicochemical properties the trial batch of dolomite tarred refactories with a ceramic bond is superior to the best foreign specimens.

Notes: Conclusions A method of enrichment of brucite by washing and sorting of it was developed. An experimental lot of composite slide gate plates for two teemings from the 300-ton steel teeming ladles of Magnitogorsk Metallurgical Combine was prepared from enriched fused brucite at Magnesite Combine. The physicochemical indices of the plates were 97.9 wt.% magnesium oxide with a nonequiaxiality of the periclase crystals of 1.94, 0.3% silica, 0.2% iron oxide, compressive strength 110 N/mm2, and open porosity 12%. Under conditions of repeated openings and closings the plates made it possible to provide 100% quality teeming of the first heat and to direct 60% of the slide gates to repeated teeming, which was done with 32%. For a final experimental verification it would be desirable to prepare a larger experimental production lot of refractories using the method developed with specific repeated use.

Notes: Conclusions The current of the drive and consequently the power consumption of rotary kilns 4.5 m in diameter and 170 m in length decrease with an increase in the rotary speed of the kiln. The open porosity of the sintered magnesite powder decreases only slightly in this case but the grain-size distribution of the powder undergoes a change. A decrease in the grain size of the raw magnesite results in more rapid dissociation and sintering and in a significant improvement in the cost-effectiveness indices of the performance of rotary kilns: the productivity increases and dust entrainment, the coefficient of raw material consumption, and specific fuel consumption decrease without a decrease in the density of the sintered powder. In a rotary kiln 3.5 m in diameter and 90 m in length, when firing the magnesite 0–15-mm fraction in place of the usual 0–40-mm fraction, the productivity of the kiln increases by 5–8% and the coefficient of raw material consumption and the specific fuel consumption decreases by 5–7 and 5–8%, respectively, in addition to which the sintered powder contains 4–5% more of the 3–0.5-mm fraction, which is used for refractories production. For firing magnesite in the form of the 0–15-mm fraction in place of the usual 0–40-mm fraction on a large scale, the crushing-beneficiation mills (the third crushing stage) must be modified with a view to utilizing mainly magnesite grades 1 and 2 as well as magnesite enriched in heavy suspensions.

Notes: Conclusions The preservative action depends on the angle of contact between the powder and the liquid: The smaller the angle of contact, the better is the preservation. The required oiling of the powder is obtained with 3–5% of preservative. Unroasted dolomite powders (apparent densities 1.86–2.3 g/cm3) are hardly affected by the preservative. Partly roasted dolomite (apparent density 2.78 g/cm3) is affected only by a preservative with a small angle of contact. Properly roasted dolomite is satisfactorily preserved; the preservative reduces the tendency to hydration during storage, and practically eliminates dust particles by agglomerating them. Oiling the powders does not impair their sintering adhesion to magnesite brick. As a result of our investigations, a project has been developed for technological instruction on the oiling of dolomite powders.

Notes: Conclusions The lowest concentration of impurity oxides is possessed by fused periclase-chromite material obtained by melting batch containing synthetic magnesium chromite instead of chromite ore. It is possible to obtain fused periclase-chromite material by fusing certain batches with boosted power in the furnace transformer, ensuring a reduction in melting time, an increase in the furnace output, and a reduction in the electric power consumption. This possibility for operating furnaces at the stated level is limited at the present time by the fleet of bogies and tanks and also by the inadequate area for cooling the blocks.
