Notes: This report is a review of the literature on systemic amyloidosis and concentrates largely on primary and plasma cell dyscrasia-related disease. Recent developments in the fields of amyloid structure and pathogenesis arc discussed and patterns of clinical presentation are described. It is emphasized that a combination of the carpal tunnel syndrome, macroglossia and specific mucocutaneous lesions necessitates an intensive search for an underlying plasma cell dyscrasia, and that immunodectrophoresis of serum and concentrated urine is essential to exclude a paraproteinaemia. Other diagnostic measures, including cutaneous histopathology, are considered. Despite the advances in our understanding of the pathogenesis of amyloid, there has been little progress in terms of the success of therapy, and the ultimate prognosis of patients with systemic amyloidosis remains poor.

Notes: Summary Close to a primary lead-zinc-cadmium smelter the standing crop of litter in woodlands was found to be elevated relative to more distant sites. The total litter accumulation is similar to that from contaminated sites reported by other authors but in this case the concentrations of heavy metals are considerably lower than those reported for other sites. Evidence is provided to support the hypothesis that within the woodlands studied, litter accumulation is not closely pH dependent, but is clearly related to both cadmium and zinc concentrations in litter. Litter accumulation occurs in certain particle size ranges and fractionation shows that the weight of accumulated litter in these size ranges is highly correlated to cadmium concentrations. These results are discussed in relation to the reported possible long term effects of metal contamination on decomposition processes and the possibility of adaptation to these adverse effects.

Notes: Summary The hemagglutination-inhibition test for detecting rotavirus antibody was evaluated by using simian rotavirus SA-11 as hemagglutinating antigen. Results show that the test is as sensitive as either complement fixation or the enzymelinked immunosorbent assay for detecting antibody to rotavirus in human sera.

Notes: Abstract This study analyzed the neutrophils and sera of patients with rheumatoid arthritis and of normal controls. No significant differences were found in the activities of the granular enzymesβ-glucuronidase and lysozyme or the cytoplasmic enzyme lactic dehydrogenase (LDH). Normal neutrophils were found to release significant (P 〈 0.05) amounts of the granular enzymes, but not of LDH in response to immunoglobulin G aggregates. There was no difference in the percent release exhibited by rheumatoid versus control neutrophils. Studies delineating the effects of rheumatoid factor sera and normal sera on aggregateinduced enzyme release revealed a significant negative correlation between the amount of rheumatoid factor in the sera and the percent release ofβ-glucuronidase and lysozyme but not of LDH. These studies thus demonstrate no abnormalities in rheumatoid neutrophil or rheumatoid serum enzyme activities or in neutrophil response to immunoglobulin G aggregates. They suggest, however, that rheumatoid factor may partially inhibit the release of lysosomal enzymes, thus suppressing this important component of the rheumatoid inflammatory process.
