Abstract A modified version of the Kerman-Klein method for the description of nuclear rotations is given in terms of generalized density matrices. It is shown that the system of basic equations is free from inconsistencies inherent in the original formulation ofKerman andKlein, and that it is completely equivalent to the cranking equations. To obtain this result from the exact equations of quantum mechanics we have, in this paper, to confine ourselves to the plane rotator model and to factorize the generalized two-particle density matrix in a special new way. We stress, however, that neither anI 2 spectrum nor a cranking mechanism has been imposed.
