Notes: SUMMARY— Chlorophyll and solanine syntheses as affected by cultivars, specific gravities, light intensities, and chemicals were studied in potato (Solanum tuberosum, L.) tubers. When exposed to 100 ft-c of while fluorescent light for 5 days, tubers of Bounty, Kennebec, Norchip and Red Lasoda were most sensitive to greening and solanine development. LaChipper and Platte tubers were resistant to the light effects. Chlorophyll synthesis was inversely related to specific gravity of tubers, while specific gravity did not affect solanine synthesis. The chlorophyll content of tubers exposed to 50 ft-c and 200 ft-c was significantly less than that of tubers exposed to 100 ft-c and 150 ft-c light intensities. The solanine synthesis was not influenced by the light intensities studied. Chemicals were applied at a concentration of 10,000 ppm by vacuum injection technique. Ethrel® and Alar® were effective in inhibiting chlorophyll and solanine formation. Ethrel was more effective in retarding the chlorophyll formation and alar was most effective in preventing solanine formation. Maleic hydrazide MH®-30 and Cyocel® were ineffective in controlling both chlorophyll and solanine formation.

Notes: Abstract The sulphur nutrition of three isolates ofAlternaria tenuis Auct., isolated from the diseased leaves ofMangifera indica L.,Musa paradisiaca L. andPsidium guajava L., was studied. They were grown on the medium devoid of sulphur as well as on media containing various sources of sulphur viz., ammonium sulphate, sodium hyposulphite, sodium thiosulphate, magnesium sulphate, potassium sulphate, potassium metabisulphite, zinc sulphate and thiourea. Sodium hyposulphite, sodium thiosulphate, magnesium sulphate, potassium sulphate and zinc sulphate were generally found to be satisfactory sources for the growth of all the isolates under study. Poor growth of the different isolates was observed on the medium devoid of sulphur.

Notes: Summary A pot-culture experiment was undertaken to assess the physiological significance of ascorbic acid in relation to drought resistance in two high-yielding varieties of rice — Taichung Native — 1 and I.R. 8. The soil-moisture stresses were maintained at 7–10 and 15–20 per cent moisture at field capacity. The wilting treatments were given only at tillering and shooting stages. Observations pertaining to survivality of rice plants and determinations of ascorbic acid, acorbigen and ascorbic acid utilization in fresh leaves were made. The two varieties of rice,i.e. Taichung Native-1 and I.R. 8 were not identical in their drought tolerance. Taichung Native-1 was more drought resistant which may be presumed in view of their differences in morphological make-up and demand for water at different stages of growth. The leaves of Taichung Native-1 showed greater contents of ascorbic acid and ascorbigen following increased rate of ascorbic acid utilization as compared to I.R. 8. These values were significantly reduced during shooting stage, a critical period to drought. This confirms the significance of ascorbic acid towards drought resistance in plants with special reference to rice.

Notes: Summary The effects of application of vanadium on the growth, yield, and chemical composition of maize were compared in a series of pot experiments during several years. It was concluded that above a threshold value (0.05 ppm) vanadium was injurious to maize crop, but at milder dose it increased the yield of maize crop significantly. Quality of produce was also affected markedly by vanadium application.

Notes: With a view to assessing the role of chemical substitutions in the modification of radiation effects on cotton fibers, the induction and post-irradiation behavior of free radicals in γ-irradiated pure, mercerized, benzoylated, and allylated cottons have been investigated by ESR spectroscopy. While mercerization and allylation were found to influence both the nature and yield of radicals, benzoylation reduced only the yield. These substitutions, which have been found to protect cotton fibers against radiation damage, therefore act differently at the molecular level.
