Notes: The shift of the volume plasmon energy with particle size in cadmium sulphide nanoparticles was examined by energy filtered transmission electron microscopy. This technique allowed the plasmon energy of individual, well-separated particles to be measured. The measured plasmon energy was found to increase with decreasing particle size, in general agreement with the theoretical approximation for plasmon shifting due to the quantum size effect. The nanoparticle diameters ranged between 1.5 and 3.8 nm and they were prepared by mechanochemical processing techniques and then electrophoretically deposited on the transmission electron microscope specimen grids. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: We have developed a method to assemble single-wall carbon nanotube (SWNT) circuits using a tapping mode atomic force microscope. Nanotubes can be controllably translated, rotated, cut, and placed on top of one another by varying the tip–sample force, and the tip speed. These operations let us construct complex nanotube circuits, which are contacted using electron beam lithography. We present data from a circuit of two crossed SWNT bundles. The lower bundle behaves as two quantum dots in series, separated by a tunnel barrier created at the junction. Gate voltages can tune the number of charges on each dot and the tunnel barrier transmission. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Summary This study was set up to compare the frequency of health, educational and behavioural problems in a geographically defined birth cohort of 7-year-old children grouped by weight at birth. The study design was based on a multi-stage postal survey, with sampling stratified by birthweight. It took place in the four counties of Oxfordshire, Buckinghamshire, Berkshire and Northamptonshire which make up the former Oxford region. We studied 1319 live births to women resident in the former Oxford region in1985, including all those with birthweights under 1500 g, or whose weight was not recorded, and a sample of those who weighed 1500–2499 g, and of those who weighed 2500 g or more at birth. The children in the sample were traced through the National Health Service Central Register (NHSCR) and self-administered questionnaires were sent to their parents, general practitioners (GP) and teachers. Of the 1169 children who were alive at the age of 7 years and were successfully traced, 805 (75%) were followed up by postal survey. The use of health services, and of additional educational support was higher, and school performance was poorer among children who had weighed less than 1500 g at birth than among children who had weighed 2500 g or more, with the rates for children who had weighed 1500–2499 g falling in between. This survey method identifies the higher rate of health and educational problems in children weighing under 2500 g at birth, particularly those with birthweight under 1500 g, compared with other children. The method could be developed to provide a way of monitoring any changes over time in the prevalence of these problems. This information can be used to assess the health and educational needs of 7-year-old children in the population.

Notes: Coniferous stumps in 83 stands in coastal British Columbia were sampled 3-5 years after precommercial thinning. The percentage of stumps and surface area colonized by Heterobasidion annosum were determined for 25 stumps of each species in each 5-cm diameter class present in each stand. There were significant differences among species in the percentages of stumps and surface area colonized, with Douglas-fir (Pseudotsuga menziesii) having the lowest values, amabilis fir (Abies amabilis) and Sitka spruce (Picea sitchensis) the highest and western hemlock (Tsuga heterophylla) being intermediate. For stumps of each species 5–20 cm in diameter, both the percentage of stumps and surface area colonized increased with increasing diameter. In stumps that were grafted to an adjacent tree, there was decreased incidence of H. annosum for Douglas-fir and Sitka spruce and increased incidence for western hemlock and amabilis fir. There were trends in the percentage of stumps and area colonized for season of thinning and biogeoclimatic subzones with the values for most species decreasing as the amount of precipitation increased. Colonization of precommercial thinning stumps by H. annosum occurs throughout the coastal region of British Columbia, and this will increase the amount of inoculum and will likely increase the incidence of butt rot. The results of this study suggest that the increase in inoculum can be minimized by thinning before age 15, by cutting only trees less than 10 cm in diameter and by thinning during low risk seasons.

Notes: A series of synthetic germination stimulants for the plant parasites Striga and Orobanche has been prepared. These compounds, analogues of the natural Striga germination stimulant, strigol (I), (Cook et al., 1966, 1972) cause signiticant germination of Striga hermonthica (Del.) Benth. seed at concentrations as low as 10−9 M, and an even greater activity against species of Orobanche has been demonstrated. Initial outdoor box trials of the compounds against Striga asiatica (L.) O. Ktze. in Hyderabad, India, have shown a reduction of up to 65% of the seed after a single treatment of the soil 6 weeks before the planting of the sorghum host.

Notes: [Auszug] Acquired resistance to cDDP (cisplatin, a cytostatic drug) appears to be a multi-factorial process and is likely to be the result of an altered gene expression pattern. The goal of this study is to profile such an expression pattern by identifying genes whose mRNA levels are differentially ...

It is a readily detectable, polymorphic, codominantly inherited inhibitor of cellular proteases. The structural gene for ?1AT is not on chromosome 21 ; however, its exact location is not known at ...
