Notes: The United Nations Development Program (UNDP) is the major technical assistance fund in the UN family of institutions. By purchasing goods and services, it affects developed and developing states alike. As well as distributing assistance, UNDP attempts to stimulate follow-up investment and procures goods and services from member states. UNDP project expenditures are correlated with public and private follow-up investment, but the relationship is rather weak. On the procurement side, developed states receive subcontracts, equipment orders, and fellowship students in direct relationship to their contributions to UNDP, and developing states attract employment possibilities for their nationals as UNDP experts in direct relationship to their contributions. Developed states receive the largest returns from UNDP procurement. Providing multilateral assistance is UNDP's primary activity, but the purchase of equipment, the generation of investment opportunities, and the employment of experts provide economic incentives for both developing and developed states.

Notes: The nurse can provide information about, and support of, breast feeding. The prenatal nurse can inform the mother of the advantages of breast feeding to herself and her baby. The labour and delivery nurse can aid the mother in her first contact with the baby and reassure the mother who has a Caesarean birth, or a premature or sick infant, that she too can nurse. The postpartum nurse can help breast feeding to continue by providing frequent maternal-infant contact during the mother's hospital stay. The nursery nurse supports breast feeding by refraining from giving the baby other fluids. The paediatric nurse continues the helping pattern by reinforcing the statements and actions of others which will further impress the mother with the appropriateness of her infant feeding method.Mothers need to be informed about infant feeding options in order to make a knowledgeable choice based on awareness of alternatives. The nurse's role in support of breast feeding varies with the time and place where patient care is provided. In each setting, however, the nurse plays a significant role in helping the mother to begin breast feeding and to enjoy it, at the same time providing her infant with optimum nutrition for his early growth and development.

Notes: [Auszug] THE mathematical stability analyses of randomly constructed food webs of Pimm and Lawton12 have emphasised the destabilising influence of omnivory. Their examination of a number of real food webs3 seems to support their hypothesis that webs with many omnivores should be rare except in insect ...

Notes: Abstract Research on the treatments of premature ejaculation and psychogenic impotence is reviewed. Problems with the existing definitions of these disorders are discussed. The studies are reviewed under seven major headings: depth therapies, behavior therapies, hypnosis, drug therapy, mechanotherapy, reeducative and supportive therapies, and extensive retraining programs. Most of the studies were case reports. Considerable methodological weaknesses were found, most notably the failure to specify subject and treatment variables, the confounding of treatment methods, inadequate or nonexistent control groups, limited, if any, follow-up assessments of treatment effects, and a failure to obtain partner validation of subjects' progress. The studies which used systematic desensitization and the studies which assessed the extensive retraining programs reported the most consistently positive results, although better-controlled replications are needed. Among other issues, it was suggested that future investigators examine the impact of treatment on homogeneous samples and conduct controlled comparisons of different treatment methods.

Notes: Summary Lambda transducing phages carying the excision repair genes uvrA + and uvrC + were selected from a pool of λ phages carrying EcoR1 fragments of E. coli DNA. These phages and also λuvrB + (obtained from Gottesman) were used to make lysogens of excision-defective strains carrying uvrA -, uvrB - or uvrC -. Lambda uvrA + was found to transduce strains carrying uvrA - but not those carrying uvrB - or uvrC -, to normal ultraviolet resistance. Similarly, λuvrB + and λuvrC + were found to complement only the corresponding uvr - allele. The λ transducing phages were co-transduced with gal + by P1 phage into lysogenic gal- recipients, and presumably were integrated at the normal prophage site.
