Notes: Bulgur of acceptable quality was prepared from two commercially available cultivars of triticale by boiling 10 min and cooking for 3 min or 10 min at 15 psi and 120°C. Moisture contents of 32-41% were needed to achieve a desirable level of gelatinization of starch. Compared to triticale whole meal, bulgur had almost similar amounts of protein, amino acids and gross energy but lower amounts of crude fat, thiamine, riboflavin, folic acid, vitamin E, calcium, iron, copper, phosphorus, manganese, zinc, potassium, sodium and magnesium.

Notes: High-resolution measurements of diffuse X-ray scattering (DXS) have been made at and above room temperature around 111, 333, 444 and 555 reciprocal lattice points (relps) using highly collimated Mo Kα1 and Cu Kα1 radiations with the specimen set in (1, -1, 1) symmetrical Bragg geometry. The distribution of DXS intensity around different relps has shown that at temperatures up to at least 573 K the contribution of thermal DXS to the observed DXS is very small. This is apparently due to the high value of the Debye temperature (640 K) of silicon. A remarkable feature of these results is that for the same value of the scattering vector |K*| the DXS intensity is different for the parallel and antiparallel orientations of K* relative to R*. The amount of anisotropy varied from sample to sample and depended on the thermal history of the specimen. This and the other features show that the observed DXS is predominantly due to point defects and their aggregates. A typical size parameter for the aggregates is 3000 to 10 000 Å.

Notes: Abstract Identity at the major histocompatibility complex (MHC) of primed T cells and macrophages was essential for the development of a T cell proliferative response to Purified Protein Derivative of tuberculin (PPD) in the presence of macrophage-associated antigen and potential allogeneic effects were eliminated by the use of one-way fetal liver chimeras as a T cell source. By contrast, such MHC restriction could not be shown for the T cell—macrophage interaction when antigen was present in soluble form. It was found that the proliferative response of primed (responder × nonresponder) F1 T cells to the Ir-gene controlled antigen, TNP-18 [Glu-Tyr-Lys (TNP) (Glu-Tyr-Ala)5], could only be restored by responder macrophages with bound antigen, while both responder and nonresponder macrophages reconstituted the response to soluble TNP-18. Supernatants from cultured responder or nonresponder macrophages could at least partially replace viable macrophages in the latter case. These results argue for two distinct antigen presentation mechanisms, depending on the physical state of the antigen rather than its chemical nature: one involves recognition of antigen in association with MHC-coded determinants and shows H-2 restriction, while the other, mediated by soluble factors and antigen, does not.

Notes: Abstract We have shown the presence of abscisic acid (ABA) in abaxial epidermal strips taken from Tulipa gesneriana and Commelina communis and that the ABA level rises in the epidermis when leaves are water stressed. ABA levels had risen 50% in the abaxial epidermis of C. communis 30 min after the leaves lost 10% of their fresh weight. Epidermis from both T. gesneriana and C. communis metabolize [14C]ABA to several products probably including phaseic acid (PA) and dihydrophaseic acid (DPA).

Notes: Summary Resistance to powdery mildew (Oidium lini) in each of the four linseed cultivars, viz., LC 216, LC 255, LC 256 and LC 269 was found to be conditioned by one dominant gene. Crosses between the resistant parents indicated that the same gene was present in all the cultivars and is designated as Ol.

Notes: Abstract DTA techniques were employed to study the thermal and structural characteristics of hydrated aluminium oxides and aluminous clays of the Pipra pelitic rocks from district Sidhi, India. Detailed microscopic investigations, X-ray and chemical analyses reveal that these clays were derived by the localized weathering of arkosic metasediments. The chemical and normative behaviours have confirmed their formation by the isochemical metamorphism of arkose, aided by a little granitization and followed by minor retrogression. A tentative correlation between the thermal and structural changes of these oxides and clay minerals at various transition temperatures has nicely displayed the presence of kaolinite, diaspore and gibbsite. The exothermic curves of kaolinite confirm the recrystallization. The presence of kaolinite in the clay fractions indicates the detrital origin.

Notes: Summary Dry-matter accumulation, and concentration and uptake of nitrogen increased with increasing level of nitrogen at all the stages of crop growth. The differences in nitrogen concentration due to nitrogen levels were greatest at panicle initiation stage and started becoming narrower with the advancement in crop age. Split application of nitrogen with its heavier fractions at tillering and panicle initiation stages either through soil alone or soil+foliage (1/3+1/3+1/3) resulted in higher dry-matter accumulation, and higher nitrogen concentration and uptake than other methods. The crop, on an average, removed 61 kg N/ha. Plants accumulated nearly 15% of the total absorbed nitrogen, up to tillering, 50% up to panicle initiation and 85–90% up to heading. Proportionately lesser nitrogen uptake and dry-matter accumulation at post-heading stage is an indicative of a major constraint for production efficiency of rainfed-upland rice culture.

Notes: Abstract The O2 consumption (mg/hr) through water in case of Anabas testudineus during development and growth has been measured and its relationship to body weight or length studied. The logarithmic plot of 02 uptake through water either against body weight or length suggested a statistically significant (P 〉 3.53) two-component curve, the point of intersection being at 11 mg body weight and 1.78 cm body length. These are the theoretical values of weight or length at which the responsibility of supplementing nearly 40% of the total O2 demand through the newly developed air breathing organ falls in the early life of the fish. One of the impelling causes forcing developing fry of Anabas to adopt a bimodal gas exchange machinery seems to be 4 fold increase in the diffusion distance at the gills.
