Notes: As a part of an ongoing larger study concerned with nurse manpower planning, an attempt has been made to investigate the reasons for the non-participation in the labour force of such a large proportion of qualified nurses. In an attempt to collect information on this topic a questionnaire was developed and distributed to a sample of nurses. The article describes in some detail the two different ways in which the names and addresses of the sample were generated. The first method involved making contact by the simple expedient of dropping leaflets through letterboxes while the second involved tracing respondents through their last known address when they originally qualified. The success of these two approaches is contrasted which should be of value to anyone contemplating a similar name-capturing exercise. A total of 2325 questionnaires were returned and computer analysed. This article presents the results of one part of that analysis i.e. the factor analysis conducted on the attitudinal questions contained in the document. A five-factor solution yielded highly interpretable results and the factor loadings are presented along with the pattern of responses. The factor scores are then contrasted for three different groups of respondents: the grouping being based on whether the respondent was working full-time, part-time or not at all.

Notes: High-resolution diffuse X-ray scattering (DXS) measurements have been made on dislocation-free silicon single crystals of the following types: (1) as-grown specimen with no heat treatment (labelled as NHT); (2) specimen heated at 1273 K under oxygen for 10 h [labelled as HT(1)] and (3) specimen heated at 1273 K under oxygen for 50 h [labelled as HT(2)]. Reciprocal space around the 111 reciprocal-lattice point in (1,-1,1) geometry has been explored using a Cu Kα exploring beam. From the distribution of DXS intensity it was found that for sample NHT, the observed DXS is predominantly due to aggregates of vacancies. Heating the specimen under oxygen produces defect aggregates of interstitial type. Infrared absorption measurements showed that the area under the 9 μm absorption band decreases, suggesting that oxygen ions aggregate into clusters of interstitial type. Transmission X-ray topographs also support these results.

Notes: Abstract The structure of94Ru is investigated through the beta decay of two isomers of94Rh, and whose half-lives are measured to be 25.8±0.2 s and 70.6±0.6 s respectively. The decay properties are studied by means of beta and gamma spectroscopy techniques. The level structure of94Ru populated in the decays of both isomers is proposed with deducedJ π values. Theβ-decay energy for71-s 94Rh is measured to be 10.0±0.4 MeV. The structure is discussed in terms of shell model.

Notes: Abstract Knowledge of the structure of the lower crust and uppermost mantle is of special importance in understanding plate tectonics. Electrical conductivity of this region has been measured recently in various parts of the world. Transfer functions are still the most widely used quantity in data analysis and model fitting. Anomalies in the horizontal magnetic components in combination with anomalies in the vertical component have been found very useful in locating conductivity contrasts. With these, when the cause of the anomaly is a concentrated line current, both the position of the line current and its depth can be directly located. The method of hypothetical event analysis is another new technique and this is highly suited for areas having complex subsurface geology or areas under non-uniform source fields or both. The anomaly is more suitable for modelling geophysical structures when it is separated into regional and local components. Model calculations still are not very satisfactory and the importance of one dimensional calculations must be emphasized for they give direct information on the variation of conductivity with depth, which is the purpose of GDS. We need more results, especially from tectonically active areas, before the underlying physical processes can be completely understood.

Notes: Summary Although at least 159 cases of interspecific hybridization between closely related species ofDrosophila have been obtained under laboratory conditions, only 7 cases of natural interspecific hybridization have been recorded. We report yet another case, concerningD. malerkotliana andD. bipectinata.

Notes: Summary The females ofDrosophila bipectinata andD. malerkotliana are able to discriminate between their own and alien males in the absence of antennae. Thus mate recognition seems to depend on contact chemoreceptors in these 2 species.

Notes: Summary In order to elucidate the phylogenetic relationships betweenD. takahashii andD. pseudotakahashii, 2 closely related allopatric species, sexual isolation was studied by the male-choice method. The present data indicate that there is a one-sided mating preference between these species. On a basis of the results, their evolutionary sequence is discussed.

Notes: Abstract Heterochromatin distribution in metaphase chromosomes of three morphologically and karyologically similar members of Drosophila, D. s.sulfurigaster, D. s.bilimbata and D. pallidifrons was studied by the Hoechst 33258 staining method. Comparison showed remarkable uniformity of H-heterochromatin among the three members except for in their Y-chromosomes. On the basis of these observations phylogenetic relationships are discussed.

Notes: Summary Two newly isolated viruses, RS1 and RS2, infective on two strains of cowpeaRhizobium capable of N2-fixationin vitro, were characterized. RS1 parasitizes CB756 but RS2 infects both 32H1 and CB756. RS1 has an isometric, polyhedral head and a long contractile tail, while RS2 has an oblate, polyhedral head and a long flexible non-contractile tail; RS1 is considerably larger than RS2. The phages were relatively stable between pH 5 and 9 (1 hour incubation). RS1 appeared to be more thermal sensitive and exhibited one component inactivation, while RS2 showed two component inactivation at 58, 60 and 62° C. RS1 had a slower adsorption rate (3.3 × 10−10 ml minutes−1) than RS2 (1.2 × 10−9 ml minutes−1, on 32H1). The latent period of RS1 and RS2 was 180 and 225 minutes, and the burst size was 15 and 9 particles/cell, respectively.
