Notes: A survey of bedding in Bristol revealed reducing mite concentrations on children's toys, mattresses, overblankets and pillows.Dermatophagoides pteronyssinus was the commonest mite found. A vacuuming schedule was devised for removing mites so that a double blind trial could be carried out. Investigation suggests that even with expert utilization of efficient vacuum cleaners the clinical efficacy would be limited as the mites appear to rapidly migrate back into the bedding.

Notes: To study the regulation of collagen degradation in periodontium, human gingival homogenate was incubated at 36°C and the release of hydroxyproline was assayed as a measure of collagenase activity. Phenylmethylsulfonyl fluoride, soybean trypsin inhibitor and scrum albumin inhibited the in vitro collagenolysis while p-aminophenylmcreuric acetate, a sulfhydryl reagent, increased the degradation. When latent collagenase obtained from gingival fibroblast culture was added to the incubation a marked increase in the collagen degradation was found. This increase was prevented by phenylmethylsulfonyl fluoride. The data suggests that collagenase may exist in gingiva partly in a latent form and its activation may be brought about by 2 mechanisms. A serine proteinase present in tissue may activate collagenase by producing a limited clevage, or the activation may occur through a reaction that involves the sulfhydryl groups of the collagenase molecule.

Notes: 1. Calculations of capillary permeability of perfused organs from indicator diffusion data are reviewed, and reconsidered in terms of two kinds of organ heterogeneity of capillary extraction.3. In the presence of realistic back-diffusion and recirculation of the indicator, the foregoing expression for PS is converted into a secure lower bound of the organ PS. Using data from four previously published studies of the brain and of the heart as examples, it is shown that this lower bound approaches and sometimes exceeds the widely differing PS values estimated by four existing methods based on more restrictive assumptions. In particular, PS estimates from the initial extraction (Eo method) fall below the lower bound in three of the four cases.4.The new results are valid without restriction on the magnitudes of the extraction fractions, so that they provide legitimate PS estimates even for highly diffusible indicators.5. Quantitative hypotheses needed for more complete modelling of indicator diffusion are reviewed, and elaborated in terms of both deterministic and probabilistic models.

Notes: Abstract Measurements of transient diffusion phenomena are reported for a “high-reactivity”, 20% open-pore volume (OPV), nuclear graphite, in the virgin state and after thermal oxidation in air or radiolytic oxidation in a carbon dioxide/carbon monoxide/methane coolant mixture. The volume of restricted access pores (RAPs) in this graphite is small (〈 5% of the OPV) and the changes in pore structure with oxidation are in general very similar for thermal and radiolytic oxidation. A significant difference is that the RAP volume decreased (as expected) on slow thermal oxidation, but showed a slight increase during radiolytic oxidation. This is consistent with a model in which the methane is severely depleted in RAPs, which are therefore subject to an effectively uninhibited corrosion.

Notes: Summary Using light and electron microscopy, the morphogenesis of the pars intermedia of the sheep pituitary gland was examined in developing lambs between 26 days of gestation and the newborn stage. Following the establishment of contact between the anterior and posterior lobe primordia seen at 26 days, the connection with the pharyngeal roof disappeared by 31 days. The lumen of Rathke's pouch, which was a prominent cavity at the earlier stages, became inconspicuous by 40 days but progressively increased in size during gestation and, in some newborn animals, contained colloid material. At 40 days, the pars intermedia consisted of a uniform population of undifferentiated cells. Cells with cytoplasmic granules were first identified at 50 days. The cytological appearance of granular cells at 70 days indicated increased synthetic activity and by 80 days they closely resembled adult glandular cells. At 100 days, membrane activity suggestive of exocytosis was first observed in granular cells; fenestrated capillaries were present, and early follicle formation between adjacent non-granular cells was seen. This apparent exocytotic release of granules was observed much more frequently between 100 days of gestation and the newborn stage than in adult pars intermedia cells. These findings indicate that glandular cells of the developing pars intermedia are actively engaged in synthesis, storage and secretion from an early stage.

Notes: The aim of this investigation was to establish the degree of denervation produced by inferior alveolar nerve section and to provide histological evidence for the presence of pulpal nerve fibres supplying the teeth which do not travel with the inferior alveolar nerve. Four adult cats were used. Each stage of the experiment was carried out under general anesthesia. The left inferior alveolar nerve was exposed and sectioned near the mandibular foramen. After 56 hours and 7 days, respectively, the jaw opening reflex to electrical stimulation of each lower canine was tested. Recordings were made from the left canine during electrical stimulation of the ipsilateral inferior alveolar nerve central and peripheral to the site of section as well as from the ipsilateral and contralateral inferior alveolar nerve during electrical stimulation of the left canine. Recordings were also made from the lingual nerve. After the recordings were completed two animals were perfused 56 hours after inferior alveolar nerve section, two more 7 days after section. Ultrathin sections of the apices of the lower canine teeth were examined in the electron microscope and each nerve fibre photographed. Each axon was examined to determine whether it was degenerating or normal.A jaw-opening reflex could not be elicited by stimulation of the left canine either 2 or 7 days after nerve section, whereas a normal response was evoked by stimulation of the right, control canine. At 2 days small responses could be recorded from the left canine teeth during stimulation of the left inferior alveolar nerve peripheral to the point of section. In one 2-day animal, responses could be recorded in the lingual nerve during stimulation. No pulpal fibres could be recorded in the inferior alveolar nerve central to the point of section nor from the contralateral inferior alveolar nerve. No pulpal fibres supplying the left canine could be recorded in any of the nerves examined at 7 days.Extensive degeneration was seen histologically even at 2 days. The canine pulp on the operated side contained only 31%, in one animal, and 26% in the other, of the number of axons of normal appearance that were present on the control side. At 7 days the number of remaining normal axons on the operated side were 5% and 13% of the numbers on the control side. All the axons of normal appearance were nonmyelinated. It is possible that the remaining axons represent fibres carried by the lingual nerve or some other alternative pathway that could not be detected electro-physiologically. Alternatively they may be a collateral innervation from adjacent tissues.
