Notes: Summary 12-O-Tetradecanoylphorbol-13-acetate (TPA)-treated adult epidermis as well as untreated fetal and adult epidermis were investigated to elucidate the effect of TPA in terms of cell differentiation using techniques of ultrastructural stereology. Twenty-four hours after a single application of TPA, the treated epidermis was characterized by involutional changes, i. e., increased volume density of intercellular spaces and of mitochondria, vacuoles, and cytoplasmic ground substance in the basal layer. However, 48 h after application, the TPA-treated epidermis was very similar to fetal epidermis, i. e., high volume density of nuclei ribosomes, rough endoplasmic reticulum, membrane-coating granules, and keratohyalin granules, and low volume density of bundled filaments in the upper layers. These stereological data indicate that the changes observed 48 h after TPA treatment were related not only to increased cell proliferation but also to inhibition of cell differentiation expressed as a reversion of the adult differentiation patterns and the acquisition of fetal characteristics in all epidermal layers.

Notes: The frequency dependence of the complex-shear modulus of a nonbrominated flame-retardant polycarbonate has been successfully represented from 1 hertz (hz) to 1 gigahertz (ghz) at 190°C using a mechanical analog of the Cole-Cole dielectric analysis. Two sets of retardation times were required centered about 74 msec and 16 μsec. The β value for the short time response was 0.83 and for the longer time response was 0.58. The values of JoN determined from the common point at which the terminal-zone arc and the transition-zone arc touch the Jc″ = 0 axis yields an entanglement molecular weight, Me, of 1470 g/mole.

Notes: Abstract Data on variation in eight polymorphic marker systems and some psychometric traits collected for other purposes in a group of Oxfordshire villages were examined for possible associations. Of a number that appeared statistically significant, one between haptoglobin and aspects of Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale (WAIS) IQ seemed particularly interesting, since the haptoglobin variation is also associated with “within-family” social mobility. After using a multiple regression approach to allow for the possible effects on IQ of sex, geographical location, social class, and family structure, the association between haptoglobin and performance IQ became even stronger. This procedure removed the evidence for all the other associations except for one between Kell blood group and IQ. When the haptoglobin variation was examined in relation to the component subtests of the WAIS, the association turned out to arise entirely from the block design element.

Notes: Optical indicators of the cationic, cyanine and anionic oxonol classes were used to evaluate the plasma membrane potential of animal cells in suspension and in monolayer culture. The optical signals were calibrated by using diffusion potential either of K+ (in the presence of valinomycin) or of H+ (in the presence of carbonyl cyanide p-trifluoromethoxyphenylhydrazone; FCCP); both classes of dye gave similar values of plasma membrane potential, in the range -40 to -90 mV for different cell types. Addition of haemolytic Sendai virus or Staphylococcus aureus α-toxin depolarizes cells and causes them to leak monovalent cations; these effects are antagonized by extracellular Ca2+. Cells infected with vesicular stomatitis or Semliki Forest virus become depolarized during an infectious cycle; infection with other viruses was without affect on plasma membrane potential.

Notes: A traction boundary condition is particularly useful when analysing flow governed by the Navier-Stokes equation. For a large range of flow situations, such as fully developed laminar flow in a pipe or far field flow, the values of boundary traction can be evaluated explicitly. The former can be readily determined from the local values of the primitive variables, while the latter corresponds to zero traction. A general approach is advocated where traction boundary conditions can be evaluated as part of the solution procedure and its value is not required, a priori, before the solution can proceed. An iterative procedure for the evaluation and imposition of non-zero tractions on boundaries, where advection is appreciable, is demonstrated by utilizing the finite element method (FEM) to simulate laminar flow, both steady state and transient, rearward of a downstream-facing step within a bounded domain.
