Notes: Frequency modulation atomic force microscopy (FM-AFM) has made imaging of surfaces in ultrahigh vacuum with atomic resolution possible. Here, we demonstrate a new approach which simplifies the implementation of FM-AFM considerably and enhances force sensitivity by directly exciting the cantilever with the thermal effects involved in the deflection measurement process. This approach reduces the mechanically oscillating mass by 6 to 8 orders of magnitude as compared to conventional FM-AFM, because external actuators and oscillating cantilever mounts are not needed. Avoiding external actuators allows the use of cantilevers with very high oscillation frequencies, which results in improved force sensitivity. Further, the implementation and operation of this new technique is significantly simplified, because external actuator, bandpass filter, and phase shifter are eliminated. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Storage mites are important sources of airborne allergens, especially on farms. A mite survey was conducted in the working environments of 121 farms in five regions of Germany. Of 859 samples, 743 (86.4%) contained mites, representing 547 857 astigmatic mites in 723 g of dust and 34 501 prostigmatic mites in 469 g of dust. Dust samples from nine sites of each farm were collected and analyzed. Ninety-three percent of all mites belonged to the order Astigmata (storage- and house-dust-mite species); 35 Astigmata and 14 Prostigmata mite species were identified. According to the abundance and steadiness of the important astigmatic mite species, the following order was found: Lepidoglyphus destructor 〉 Glycyphagus domesticus 〉 Acarus siro 〉 Tyrophagus longior 〉 Blomia tjibodas 〉 Chortoglyphus arcuatus 〉 Thyreophagus entomophagus 〉 Tyrophagus putrescentiae 〉 Euroglyphus longior 〉 Tyrophagus palmarum 〉 Acarus farris 〉 Acarus immobilis 〉 Gohieria fusca. Blomia tjibodas was described for the first time as an abundant species of farms in Germany.

Description / Table of Contents: Summary   Graph drawing is a new and growing area in Computer Science. It is concerned with the design, analysis, implementation and evaluation of new algorithms for aesthetically nice drawings of graphs. Through the use of some selected examples of applications, typical problems, and solutions, we would like to provide an introduction into this still relatively unknown field. And we survey activities and goals of a working group consisting of members of the universities of Halle, Köln and Passau and the Max-Planck-Institut für Informatik in Saarbrücken, that is funded by the German Science Foundation DFG under the program „Efficient Algorithms for Discrete Problems and their Applications“.

Notes: Abstract We describe neural foraminal enlargement as a radiologic sign indicating bilateral interfacetal dislocation or subluxation injuries (BID/S) of the lower cervical spine on axial images. Axial neural formainal width was measured by computed tomography or magnetic resonance imaging in 10 patients with BID/S and compared with measurements in 20 control patients. In both the BID/S patients and controls, the size of the foramina at the injured level was compared with the foramina at levels immediately above and below the injury. These measurements were compared for statistical significance using Student's t-test. The width of the injured foramina averaged 10.4 mm in BID/S and 5.3 mm in controls (P〈0.001). The enlargement in the BID/S cases relative to foramina above and below the injured level was statistically significant. The sign was also assessed qualitatively for detection of BID/S by three reviewers blindly analyzing 19 cases (9 BID/S and 10 controls) for signs of widened neural foramina. The pooled blinded review yielded a sensitivity of 81% and a specificity of 83% for neural foraminal enlargement as a sign indicative of BID/S. We describe enlargement, of neural foramina as a radiologic sign corroborative of BID/S on axial images.

Notes: We show that a compact flat manifold has the structure of a real affine variety. Using generators of the affine algebra we constructed embeddings with flat induced metric of all compact flat manifolds with cyclic holonomy group of order 2.
