Notizen: Dynamic mechanical measurements had been made on polyurethanes of a range of hard segment content (HSC) obtained from α,ω-dihydroxy derivatives of polydioxolane, polybutyltrioxocane, and poly(propylene oxide) of 2000-12,000 MW coupled with MDI and TDI with hydroxyethyl phthalamide chain extenders. N-methylated chain extender was used to investigate the effect of hydrogen bonding. A broad γ transition was observed between -100 and -115°C attributable to the local motion of methylene sequences with a distribution of relaxations. The β-transition between -55 and -72°C is influenced by the degree of hydration; the α-transition occurs at nearly the same temperatures for all the TPEs, independent of HSC and thermal history. The magnitude of the loss tangent peak is nearly proportional to the soft segment content; the peak corresponds to the glass transition. An α-transition at higher temperature is sensitive to the structure of soft segment, HSC, and thermal history. It is probably associated with the melting of some weakly ordered regions in the soft domain. The hard domain counterpart was observed at the next higher temperature as the ∊-relaxation. The final large loss of storage modulus occurs at temperatures much below the melting transition.

Notizen: Ethylene was polymerized by Cp2ZrCl2-methylaluminoxane (MAO) catalysts where a portion of the MAO was replaced with trimethyl aluminum (TMA). At a total Al to Zr ratio of 1070, there is neither appreciable loss of productivity nor change in polymerization profile for TMA/MAO ≤ 10. The productivity is reduced only by two- to three-fold for TMA/MAO ≤ 100 accompanied by a 10 min induction period. Aging of this catalyst did not affect the induction period, but improves its productivity. The kinetic isotope effect for radiolabeling with tritiated methanol is 2.0. About 40% of the Zr is active for the catalyst with {99 [TMA] + 1[MAO]} to Zr ratio of 100. The rate constants for propagation and chain transfer were obtained. The mechanisms for the mixed TMA and MAO cocatalyst system are discussed. The results of this work have important practical significance. MAO is a hazardous material to synthesize and only in low yields. The replacement of 〉 90% of MAO with TMA represents a substantial saving since as much as 0.1M of the former is commonly used for a polymerization.

Notizen: The kinetics of propylene polymerization by superactive CH-catalyst prepared from toluene solution of MgCl2 · EH/PA/TiCl4-TEA/PES was investigated. The results are compared with CW-catalyst prepared from crystalline MgCl2/EB/PC/TEA/TiCl4-TEA/MPT (abbreviations given in the text). The former is four times more active than the latter and produces more isotactic polypropylene. The CH-catalyst has 25% of the Ti as isospecific sites as compared to 6.7% for the CW-catalysts. These sites have the same rate constant of propagation so that the higher polymerization activity of the CH-catalyst is attributable simply to a greater number of active sites. Differences in the kinetics of deactivation and of chain transfer for the two catalysts are described.

Notizen: Two series of catalysts were made, one from MgCl2-A solution containing MgCl2, EH (2-ethylhexanol), and EB (ethyl benzoate) dissolved in decane and another from MgCl2-B solution containing MgCl2, EH, and phthalic anhydride which reacted to form the corresponding phthalic ester. Reactions of these solutions with TiCl4 with or without another ester produced a family of eight catalysts. They form two groups, one having monoesters as modifiers, and the other containing diesters as modifiers. The surface area, pore volume, x-diffractions, polymerization activity, and catalytic stereospecificity of these catalysts have been compared. The diester catalysts differ from the monoester catalysts in every respect. By comparison the corresponding member of the diester catalysts have half as much Ti per Mg, more than 10 times the pore volume, more than a 100-fold the surface area, about 50% more productivity, and greatly increased steroespecificity.

Notizen: Bis(neomenthyl cyclopentadienyl)zirconium dichloride/methyl aluminoxane (η5-(NMCp)2ZrCl2/MAO) catalyst has been investigated for ethylene polymerization. About 51% of the Zr forms active sites more or less instantaneously according to quenching with tritiated methanol. There is an initial drop of rate of polymerization, Rp, of about 30% which remains constant thereafter. The catalytic activity increases monotonically with temperature; it is proportional to [MAO]1.75 at a constant [Zr] = 1.5 μM and proportional to [Zr]-1.2 at a constant [MAO] = 64.5 mM. At very large [MAO]/[Zr], the catalyst has extremely high activity; κp = 5 × 103 (Ms)-1 at 50°C. There is also facile chain transfer to aluminum, κtrA = 0.14 s-1 at 50°C. Both κp and κtrA are about 30 times greater than the corresponding rate constants for MgCl2 supported TiCl3 catalysts. The TiCl3/MgCl2 and (NMCp)2/MAO catalysts have nearly the same activation energy for propagation (ca. 7 kcal/mol-1). The higher activity of the latter is due to its larger preexponential factor in κp. The dependence of catalytic activity on the [MAO]/[Zr] ratio may be explained by rapid association-dissociation equilibria of MAO involving acid-base and/or electron deficient bridge complexation.

Notizen: Lactoferrin (Lf) in blood and/or marrow neutrophils was semiquantified using indirect immunofluorescence technique in nine mammalian species. Neutrophil iron-binding reactivity (NFeBR), which corresponds primarily to Lf, was also visualized and semiquantified using functional cytochemical (FeNTA-AF) technique at the light microscopic level in these nine and in an additional fifteen mammalian species, and in selected species at the ultrastructural level. Neutrophil immunoreactive Lf was positively correlated with total cellular and granule content of NFeBR among these nine species, and with previously reported concentrations of neutrophil Lf quantified by radioimmunoassay. Relative levels of Lf in neutrophil extracts from rat, hamster, and human were confirmed using SDS-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis and immunoblotting. Relatively high levels of immunoreactive neutrophil Lf and/or NFeBR were observed in carnivores (ten species) and primates (six species). Among rodents (five species), the levels were variable, and the artiodactyls (four species) studied had low levels. These results demonstrate that neutrophil Lf levels vary widely among mammalian species. In addition, FeNTA-AF technique provides a rapid means of evaluating animals for relative quantities of neutrophil Lf.

Notizen: We have shown that platelet-activating factor (PAF), a weak primary stimulus for neutrophil superoxide generation, synergistically enhances neutrophil oxidative responses to the tumor promoter phorbol myristate acetate (PMA). Since PMA is known to cause cytosol-to-membrane shift of calcium-activated, phospholipid-dependent protein kinase (protein kinase c, PKC) in human neutrophils, we investigated the role of PAF in modifying PMA-induced PKC activation/translocation. Protein kinase activity was measured as the incorporation of 32P from γ-32P-ATP into histone H1 induced by enzyme in cytosolic and particulate fractions from sonicated human neutrophils. PAF did not alter the sharp decrease in cytosolic PKC activity induced by PMA. However, in the presence of PAF and PMA, total particulate protein kinase activity increased markedly over that detected in the presence of PMA alone (144 ± 9 pmoles 32P/107PMN/minute in cells treated with 20 ng/ml PMA compared to 267 ± 24 pmoles 32P in cells exposed to PMA and 10-6M PAF). The increase in total particulate protein kinase activity was synergistic for the two stimuli, required the presence of cytochalasin B during stimulation, and occurred at PAF concentration of 10-7and M above. Both PKC and calcium-, phospholipid-independent protein kinase activities in whole particulate fractions were augmented by PAF as were both activities in detergent-extractable particulate subfractions. PAF did not directly activate PKC obtained from control or PMA-treated neutrophils. However, the PKC-enhancing effect of PAF was inhibited in the absence of calcium during cellular stimulation. PAF also increased particulate protein kinase activity in cells simultaneously exposed to FMLP but the effect was additive for these stimuli. These results suggest that PAF enhances PMA-induced particulate PKC activity by a calcium-dependent mechanism. The enhancing effect of PAF may be directly involved in the mechanism whereby the phospholipid “primes” neutrophils for augmented oxidative responses to PMA.

Notizen: This paper presents direct measurements of acoustic pressure wave propagation in cat brains irradiated with pulsed 2.45-GHz microwaves. Short rectangular microwave pulses (2 μs, 15 kW peak power) were applied singly through a direct-contact applicator located at the occipital pole of a cat's head. Acoustic pressure waves were detected by using a small hydrophone transducer, which was inserted stereotaxically into the brain of an anesthetized animal through a matrix of holes drilled on the skull. The measurements clearly indicate that pulsed microwaves induce acoustic pressure waves which propagate with an acoustic wave velocity of 1523 m/s.
