Notes: : A single-family residence in Tucson, Arizona, was retrofitted with water-conserving fixtures, rainwater harvesting, and graywater reuse systems. During a four-year study, efficient use of water was shown to significantly decrease demand for domestic water at the house without reducing the residents' quality of life. The use of municipal water was reduced by 66 percent to 148 gallons per day (gpd) and total household use was reduced by 27 percent to 245 gpd. Graywater reuse averaged approximately 77 gpd or 32 percent of the total household water use. Evaporative cooling required about 15 gpd. Water use for toilet flushing was only 9 gallons per capita per day (gpcd) or 14 percent of interior water use.

Notes: Summary Bone metabolism was studied in a group of 92 subjects. A greater age-related decrease in calcitonin and estradiol concentrations exists in women than in men, though this difference was not significant; it was significant, however, when the values of the three different groups of women were compared. We present what we have called the second calcitonin phenomenon, that is, a highly significant difference in women between a second basal calcitonin level and the primary admission value. In the calcium infusion test, men considered to be osteoporotic showed a deceleration in the rapid loss of reserve calcitonin deposits.

Notes: Abstract Acute morphine treatment has been shown to cause a uniform calcium depletion in various brain regions and to evoke hypermotility in mice. On the other hand, it has been reported previously that calcium channel blockers reduce the behavioral stimulation induced by different methods in mice, and it is known that these drugs increase the morphine analgesia and reduce the abstinence syndrome. The effect of calcium channel blockers, nifedipine and diltiazem, on the morphine- and amphetamine-induced hypermotility were evaluated. Mice activity was measured with photocell motility meters. The results show that neither nifedipine nor diltiazem decrease significantly the motility in control and amphetamine-treated mice; however, when they were administered to morphine-treated mice the hypermotility was significantly reduced. The mechanism responsible for this interference is still unknown.

Notes: Abstract Fungi have been isolated that can tolerate and absorb high levels of heavy metals, especially Cd, when grown in a continuous flow air-lift fermenter with up to 10 throughputs per day. This allows the recovery of metals or the purification of industrial effluent streams. An average of over 97% of the Cd was removed from the simulated effluent during passage through the fermenter, reducing the Cd concentration from over 6 mg L−1 to less than 0.2 mg L−1. The biomass recovered contained up to 2.9% Cd (on a dry weight basis) and can either be disposed of or returned for smelting to recover the metal.

Notes: Abstract We present here explicit mathematical formulas for calculating the concentration, mass, and velocity of movement of the center of mass of the plant growth regulator auxin during its polar movement through a linear file of cells. The results of numerical computations for two cases, (a) the conservative, in which the mass in the system remains constant and (b) the non-conservative, in which the system acquires mass at one end and loses it at the other, are graphically presented. Our approach differs from that of Mitchison's (Mitchison 1980) in considering both initial effects of loading and end effects of substance leaving the file of cells. We find the velocity varies greatly as mass is entering or leaving the file of cells but remains constant as long as most of the mass is within the cells. This is also the time for which Mitchison's formula for the velocity, which neglects end effects, reflects the true velocity of auxin movement. Finally, the predictions of the model are compared with two sets of experimental data. Movement of a pulse of auxin through corn coleoptiles is well described by the theory. Movement of auxin through zucchini shoots, however, shows the need to take into account immobilization of auxin by this tissue during the course of transport.

Notes: Summary Twelve male and female subjects (eight trained, four untrained) exercised for 30 min on a treadmill at an intensity of maximal O2 consumption (% $$\dot V$$ O2max) 90.0%, SD 4.7 greater than the anaerobic threshold of 4 mmol ·1−1 (Than =83.6% $$\dot V$$ O2max, SD 8.9). Time-dependent changes in blood lactate concentration ([lab]) during exercise occurred in two phases: the oxygen uptake ( $$\dot V$$ O2) transient phase (from 0 to 4 min) and the $$\dot V$$ O2 steady-state phase (4–30 min). During the transient phase, [lab] increased markedly (l.30 mmol · l −1 · min −1, SD 0.13). During the steady-state phase, [lab] increased slightly (0.02 mmol · 1−1 · min−1, SD 0.06) and when individual values were considered, it was seen that there were no time-dependent increases in [lab] in half of the subjects. Following hyperlacticaemia (8.8 mmol -l−1, SD 2.0) induced by a previous 2 min of supramaximal exercise (120% $$\dot V$$ O2max), [lab] decreased during the $$\dot V$$ O2 transient (−0.118 mmol · 1−1 · min−1, SD 0.209) and steady-state (−0.088 mmol · 1−1 · min −1, SD 0.103) phases of 30 min exercise (91.4% $$\dot V$$ O2max, SD 4.8). In conclusion, it was not possible from the Than to determine the maximal [lab] steady state for each subject. In addition, lactate accumulated during previous supramaximal exercise was eliminated during the $$\dot V$$ O2 transient phase of exercise performed at an intensity above the Than. This effect is probably largely explained by the reduction in oxygen deficit during the transient phase. Under these conditions, the time-course of changes in [lab] during the $$\dot V$$ O2 steady state was also affected.

Notes: Summary Fifty-four evaluable patients with SCLC previously treated with chemotherapy received either N-methylformamide or spirogermanium. There was one partial response to N-methylformamide. The median survival times for patients treated with N-MF and spirogermanium were 11.7 and 12.6 weeks respectively. Five patients treated with N-MF experienced severe toxicity while four patients treated with spirogermanium experienced severe and life-threatening toxicity.
