Notizen: Some insight is offered into the dimensional dependence of the Wentzel–Kramers–Brillouin (WKB) and improved-WKB approximations introduced by Steiner in connection with hyperspherical (originally circular) quantum billiards. The accuracy of every new D-dimensional picture is estimated by examining the residues of the spectral zeta-function poles. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

Notizen: A computer simulation method is developed for the study of the adiabatic heterogeneous electron transfer reactions between an ion in solution and a metal electrode. The particular system studied is the Fe2+/Fe3+ electron transfer reaction with a Pt(111) electrode. The adiabatic classical free energy curve for the reaction is computed using umbrella sampling and molecular dynamics generated by the adiabatic solution to an Anderson–Newns-like Hamiltonian. Reactive flux calculations are then performed to determine the effect of transition state recrossings on the classical adiabatic rate constant. These effects are not found to be large (κ∼0.6). The water solvent model is next quantized using Feynman path integral techniques and the quantum adiabatic free energy curve for electronic transfer is calculated. The latter calculation shows that the solvent activation free energy barrier and thermodynamic driving force for the electron transfer process can be significantly affected by the water quantization. These results suggest that classical models for water may not be adequate, or at least need to be modified, for the accurate computer simulation of many heterogeneous electron transfer reactions. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

Notizen: Neural networks provide an efficient, general interpolation method for nonlinear functions of several variables. This paper describes the use of feed-forward neural networks to model global properties of potential energy surfaces from information available at a limited number of configurations. As an initial demonstration of the method, several fits are made to data derived from an empirical potential model of CO adsorbed on Ni(111). The data are error-free and geometries are selected from uniform grids of two and three dimensions. The neural network model predicts the potential to within a few hundredths of a kcal/mole at arbitrary geometries. The accuracy and efficiency of the neural network in practical calculations are demonstrated in quantum transition state theory rate calculations for surface diffusion of CO/Ni(111) using a Monte Carlo/path integral method. The network model is much faster to evaluate than the original potential from which it is derived. As a more complex test of the method, the interaction potential of H2 with the Si(100)-2×1 surface is determined as a function of 12 degrees of freedom from energies calculated with the local density functional method at 750 geometries. The training examples are not uniformly spaced and they depend weakly on variables not included in the fit. The neural net model predicts the potential at geometries outside the training set with a mean absolute deviation of 2.1 kcal/mole. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

Notizen: This article reconstructs the social networks linking early personal computing pioneers in order to identify the social and political representations and images that defined these social networks. Using interviews of key actors and, guided by social network theory, we describe the linkage between technical development and cultural representations, particularly those of the user, in the case of personal computers. From this reconstructed perspective, the personal computer as a technology can be seen both as a machine and as a culture, enabling us to analyze the way our own activity as today's computer users has been socially constructed. Focusing on the translation of ideas from the Stanford Research Institute to Xerox PARC in the 1970s, we report on our progress in rebuilding these networks and the representations they contained.

Notizen: The uropathogenic Escherichia coli strain 536 (O6:K15:H31) carries two unstable DNA regions on its chromosome which were termed pathogenicity islands (Pais). Both pathogenicity islands, Pai I and Pai II, are incorporated into tRNA specific loci: Pai I is located in the tRNA gene for selenocysteine (selC), and Pai II is integrated in the leucine-specific tRNA locus leuX. Mutant strain 536−21 has lost the two pathogenicity islands together with the intact tRNA genes. While 536 is a virulent strain, 536−21 has lost a number of properties, including in vivo virulence. In previous publications we reported that the genes coding for two haemolysins (hly I, hly II) and P-related fimbria (prf) are located on the Pais. In this paper, we demonstrate that the expression of other gene products influencing metabolic properties in addition to in vivo virulence are strongly dependent on the intact tRNA loci selC and leuX. In order to determine the influence of the two tRNAs on the expression of these properties, the genes seIC and leuX were cloned from the genome of strain 536 and then introduced into the mutant 536−21. Our results clearly show that the selenocysteine-specific tRNA (tRNASec) directly influences the ability of the bacteria to grow under anaerobic conditions, because selenocysteine is part of the enzyme formate dehydrogenase (FDH) which is involved in mixed acid fermentation. The rare leucine-specific tRNA5Leu, encoded by leuX, influences a number of properties including type 1 fimbria production, flagellation and motility, production of enterobactin and serum resistance, and is also necessary for full in vivo virulence. While the tRNASec is directly involved in the production of FDHs, the leuX specific tRNA5Leu appears to influence the expression of various factors through specific transcriptional or translational control mechanisms.

Notizen: Abstract Light microscopic and ultrastructural findings in patients suffering from chloroquine-induced cardiomyopathy are reviewed. Based on our own observations in an autopsy case, functional and morphological similarities between chloroquine effects and hereditary lysosomal storage diseases are discussed.

Notizen: Abstract Collembola and microbial biomass C were investigated in a field experiment with controlled agricultural traffic and crop rotation over a period of 27 months. The wheel-induced compactive efforts were applied according to management practices within the crop rotation of sugar beet, winter wheat, and winter barley. Increasing wheel traffic produced increasing soil compaction, mainly due to a reduction in surface soil porosity. Increasing soil compaction was accompanied by a decrease in microbial biomass C and the density of collembola. The influence of soil compaction on microbial biomass C was smaller than that of the standing crop. However, for collembola, especially euedaphic species, a reduction in pore space appeared to be of more importance than the effects of a standing crop. Within the crop rotation, microbial biomass C and the density of collembola increased in the order sugar beet, winter wheat, and winter barley.
