    Notes: A multidisciplinary group of experts was convened by the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) to discuss new opportunities in psychotherapy research. Participants agreed that more research is needed to assess stakeholders’ needs, to better understand techniques commonly used in clinical practice, and to test efficacious treatments in community settings. These steps will require increased collaboration across different disciplines, development of new research methods, and a willingness for investigators to ask novel research questions. Participants outlined obstacles to conducting public health-oriented research such as the current dearth of supportive infrastructure (e.g., lack of training opportunities for new investigators), concerns about how applications for conducting new or hybrid methodologies will fare when evaluated by NIMH initial review groups, and the obvious differences in terminology used by relevant stakeholders.

    Notes: Abstract Several techniques have been used to demonstrate that human arteries respond to atherosclerosis by increasing their total arterial area to prevent a decrease in blood flow. Three-dimensional reconstructions of coronary arteries can document this compensatory response accurately and specifically. Seven human coronary arteries were reconstructed using intravascular ultrasound and biplane angiography, and vessel geometries were quantified. In all seven vessels, as plaque area increased, overall vessel area increased (R = 0.986, 0.933, 0.984, 0.678, 0.763, 0.963, and 0.830), but luminal cross-sectional area did not significantly decrease. Focal compensatory enlargement was identified in each vessel, and in some cases this response appeared to occur until the vessel was 65% occluded. Luminal enlargement near the proximal ends was attributed to the natural taper of the vessel. The semi-automated, three-dimensional segmentation technique used in this study allows reproducible quantification, as there is no subjective manual tracing involved. Following the intravascular ultrasound transducer in time and space with biplane angiography allows for accurate reconstruction with or without automated pullback devices. Information on the rate of change of vessel measurements is also presented, which, when combined with visualization of accurate 3D geometry, provides a unique assessment of coronary compensatory enlargement. This reconstruction technique can be applied in a clinical environment with no major modification.

    Notes: Abstract A plate theory-based method for determining energy release rates is presented for general loadings of three dimensional layered structures. Mode decomposition is performed for cases that exhibit an inverse square root singularity and for which certain other restrictions apply. Predictions for energy release rate and mode mix for typical problems are presented and verified by comparison with results obtained by three dimensional finite element analyses.

    Notes: Abstract A variety of energy release rate-based approaches are evaluated for their accuracy in predicting delamination growth in unidirectional and multidirectional laminated composites. To this end, a large number of unidirectional and multidirectional laminates were tested in different bending and tension configurations. In all cases, the critical energy release rate was determined from the tests in the most accurate way possible, such as by compliance calibration or the area method of data reduction. The mode mix from the tests, however, was determined by a variety of different approaches. These data were then examined to determine whether any of the approaches yielded the result that toughness was a single-valued function of mode mix. That is, for an approach to have accurate predictive capabilities, different test geometries that are predicted to be at the same mode mix must display the same toughness. It was found that variously proposed singular field-based mode mix definitions, such as the β=0 approach or basing energy release rate components on a finite amount of crack extension, had relatively poor predictive capabilities. Conversely, an approach that used a previously developed crack tip element analysis and which decomposed the total energy release rate into non-classical components was found to have excellent predictive capabilities. It is postulated that this approach is more appropriate for many present-day laminated composites.

    Notes: Abstract Interviews were conducted with 102 Ontario men who have sex with men who identify themselves as “gay,” “bisexual,” and “not gay,” concerning the meanings and satisfactions associated with their sexuality. Sexual discourses of men who identify themselves in different ways reveal some common criteria for placing self and others into the “gay” category. “Gay,” in the everyday speech of these men, appears to refer to an elaborated discourse around the potential for emotional involvement and relationships rather than a reference to an essentialized sexuality. Comparison of men who place themselves inside and outside sexual identity categories shows that many find gay identity to be a horizon of increased possibilities, rather than the limitation critiqued by queer theory. These findings are contextualized in recent debates in identity theory.
