    Notes: Background: Analysis of ventricular late potentials (LP) with signal-averaged ECG (SAECG) using three bipolar, orthogonal X,Y, Z leads is a validated method of risk-stratification in patients prone to ventricular tachycardia. The aim of-this study was to validate a ECG system, which allows LP analysis using X,Y, Z leads mathematically derived from the standard 12-lead ECG.Methods and Results: In 36 patients (age 56 ± 12 years, coronary artery disease 71 %, LVEF 46 ± 14%) with known or suspected ventricular tachyarrhythmia, two consecutive SAECGs were recorded, one with mathematically derived and another one with true X,Y, Z leads. Time domain measurements with these different lead systems were compared using linear regression analysis and “Bland-Altman” plots. Correlation was good (r = 0.92) for the filtered QRS complex duration, but poor for the terminal QRS amplitude (RMS) and duration (LAS) criteria (r = 0.66 and 0.61, respectively; P 〈 0.0001). Defining LPS as present if at least two of the three time domain criteria were abnormal, the result matched in 28 (78%), but differed in 8 (22%) patients.Conclusion: SAECG using X,Y, Z leads mathematically derived from the standard 12-lead ECG compared to true bipolar X,Y, Z leads show a close correlation in filtered QRS duration, but can differ considerably in the other time domain measurements, resulting in different interpretation of LP analysis in 22%. Therefore, SAECG registration should currently be performed with true X,Y, Z leads, until the accuracy of other approaches is validated. A.N.E. 2002;7(4):302–306

    Notes: The availability of statistical software packages has led to a sharp increase in use of complex research designs and complex statistical analyses in communication research. An informal examination of studies from 2 leading communication journals suggests that the analysis of variance (ANOVA) is often the statistic of choice, and a substantial proportion of published research reports using ANOVA employ complex (k ≥ 3) factorial designs, often involving multiple dependent variables. This article reports a series of Monte Carlo simulations which demonstrate that this complexity may come at a heavier cost than many communication researchers realize. As frequently used, complex factorial ANOVA yield Type I and Type II error rates that many communication scholars would likely consider unacceptable. Consequently, quality of statistical inference in many studies is highly suspect. Communication researchers are warned about problems associated with design and statistical complexity and solutions are suggested.

    Notes: A quantitative, theory-driven model of hemodynamics was developed, relating reactivity in blood pressure to orthogonal dimensions of “hemodynamic profile” and “compensation deficit,” which were derived from the (multiplicative) interaction of cardiac output and total peripheral resistance. A Finapres 2300e was used to estimate blood pressure, cardiac output, and total peripheral resistance in 100 healthy men and women during mental arithmetic and cold pressor tasks on two occasions. Results were consistent with model predictions. As predicted, cardiac output and peripheral resistance reactions were curvilinearly related, and blood pressure reactivity was strongly related to compensation deficit (r= .76–.89). Conversely, the orthogonally defined hemodynamic profile remained independent of blood pressure reactivity (r= .11 or less). The data show that the present model overcomes several difficulties and inconsistencies in previous attempts to obtain an independent measure of hemodynamic profile. The new model could help to elucidate sources of cardiovascular pathogenesis not suggested from the study of blood pressure reactivity alone.

    Notes: This research examines the location choice of private schools entering the California schooling market in 1979–80. We find that entrants are more likely to locate in public school districts with lower levels of per–pupil expenditure and higher fractions of public school students who reside in low–income households. In addition, we provide evidence of differences in the responsiveness of different types of private schools to the underlying conditions. Also, in comparing our results to those of previous research, we find that the determinants of the location choices of entrants appear to be the same as the determinants of the location pattern of incumbent private schools.

    Notes: Abstract Ozone depletion by anthropogenic gases has increased the atmospheric transmission of solar ultraviolet-B radiation (UV-B, 280-315 nm). Our understanding of the consequencences of enhanced UV-B levels on primary producers has grown dramatically over the past 20 years, but it has been hampered by how realistically experimental UV-B exposures mimic ozone-depletion scenarios. Overcoming these shortcomings will require sophisticated and creative approaches. Biological weighting functions and solar spectral irradiance estimates are critical in evaluating effects and require more attention. Whereas UV screening compounds in terrestrial and aquatic producers commonly increase with UV-B exposure, the implications, while potentially far reaching, are unclear. Photosynthesis is more sensitive to UV-B in phytoplankton than in terrestrial plants, probably owing to less effective screening in phytoplankton. Productivity of terrestrial plants is usually unaffected by enhanced UV-B, although reduced growth has been observed and may increase in magnitude over successive years. Aquatic productivity is often compromised by short-term exposures to enhanced UV-B, and long-term assessments are complicated by the dynamic nature of aquatic systems and by nonlinear responses. Recent work examining UV-B effects on multiple trophic levels suggests that outcomes will be diverse and difficult to predict. Such effects may lead to feedbacks on primary producers.

    Notes: The electronic energy transfer pathways that occur following collisions between I2 in the E ion-pair electronic state (v=0, J=55) and He and Ar atoms have been determined. The nearby D, D′, and β ion-pair states are populated, but with relative branching ratios that vary with the rare gas collision partner. In He/I2 collisions, the D state is preferentially populated, while Ar/I2 collisions preferentially populate the β electronic state. Bimolecular rate constants and effective hard sphere collision cross sections have been determined for each channel; the cross sections range from 7.0±1.0 Å2 for populating the β state with Ar collisions to 0.9±0.2 Å2 for populating the D′ state with He collisions. For both rare gas collision partners, and all three final electronic states, low vibrational levels are populated, in rough accord with the relevant Franck–Condon factors. There is little propensity observed for population of vibrational levels that are in near resonance with the initially prepared level in the E state. © 2002 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: We examined the influence of solar ultraviolet-B radiation (UV-B; 280–315 nm) on the growth of Colobanthus quitensis plants by placing them under contrasting UV-B filters at Palmer Station, along the Antarctic Peninsula. The filters reduced diurnal biologically effective UV-B (UV-BBE) either by 83% (‘reduced UV-B’) or by 12% (‘near-ambient UV-B’) over the 63 day experiment (7 November 1998–8 January 1999). Ozone column depletion averaged 17% during the experiment. Relative growth and net assimilation rates of plants exposed to near-ambient UV-B were 30 and 20% lower, respectively, than those of plants exposed to reduced UV-B. The former plants produced 29% less total biomass, as a result of containing 54% less aboveground biomass. These reductions in aboveground biomass were mainly the result of a 45% reduction in shoot biomass, and a 31% reduction in reproductive biomass. Reductions in shoot biomass were owing to an 18% reduction in branch production by main shoots, while reductions in reproductive biomass were the result of a 19% reduction in individual capsule mass. Total plant leaf area was reduced by 19% under near-ambient UV-B, although total leaf biomass was unaffected because leaves had a greater specific leaf mass. The reduction in plant leaf area under near-ambient UV-B was attributable to: (1) production of 11% fewer leaves per main shoot system and plant, which resulted from an 18% reduction in branch production by main shoots. Leaf production per individual main shoot or branch was not affected; (2) shorter leaf longevity—main shoots contained 14% fewer green leaves at a given time; and (3) smaller individual leaves—leaf elongation rates were 14% slower and mature leaves were 13% shorter.

    Notes: The Upper Cretaceous Juniper Ridge Conglomerate (JRC) near Coalinga, California, provides a rare, high-quality exposure of a submarine channel to overbank transition. The facies architecture of the JRC comprises a thick, predominantly mudstone sequence overlain by a channellized conglomerate package. Conglomeratic bounding surfaces truncate successions of interbedded turbiditic sandstones and mudstones both vertically and laterally. Thick-bedded, massive sandstones are interbedded with conglomerates. Facies architecture, palaeocurrent indicators, slump features, sandstone percentages and sandstone bed thickness trends lead to the interpretation that these elements comprise channel and overbank facies. A vertical sequence with conglomerate at the base, followed by thick-bedded sandstone, and capped by interbedded turbiditic sandstone and mudstone form a fining-upward lithofacies association that is interpreted as a single channel-fill/overbank system. Three similar lithofacies associations can be related to autocyclic processes of thalweg migration and submarine fan aggradation or to allocyclically driven changes in sediment calibre.
