    Notes: We use survey data and field research to investigate the effects of employee involvement practices on outcomes for blue-collar workers in the auto-supply industry. We find these practices raise wages by 3–5%. The causal mechanism linking involvement and wages appears to be most consistent with efficiency-wage theories, and least consistent with compensating differences. We find no evidence that employee involvement affects plants' survival or employment growth.

    Notes: Abstract Large-scale sources of neural stem cells are crucial for both basic research and novel approaches toward treating neurological disorders. Three sources that produce neural cells closely resembling their normal counterparts are now available: oncogene immortalized stem cells, neurospheres, and embryonic stem cell (ES)-derived neural cells. Cells including multiple subtypes of CNS and PNS neurons, as well as oligodendrocytes, Schwann cells, and astrocytes, are modeled by these large-scale sources. Although most cell lines were originally from rodents, their human counterparts are being discovered and characterized.

    Notes: The microwave and millimeter-wave spectrum of HeH2〈sup ARRANGE="STAGGER"〉+ is reported over the frequency range 6–170 GHz. The observation of hyperfine structure in the spectra of some transitions made a clear distinction between the ortho- and para-hydrogen in the molecular ion. The hyperfine structure and double resonance Zeeman studies have enabled estimates of the quantum numbers involved in the transitions to be made. The Zeeman pattern in a 21.8 GHz doublet has been analyzed using an effective spin Hamiltonian with a case (B) basis set. This suggests an assignment of ΔN=+1, N=10←N=11. A similar analysis, in an extended hyperfine basis set, for the 15.2 GHz transition suggests an assignment of either ΔN=0, N=3, or N=4 as appropriate assumption from which to refine the potential. © 2002 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: The full interaction potential between Ne(1S) and Ne+(2P) is determined by least-squares fitting of potential parameters to spectroscopic data, principally from the near-dissociation microwave spectra of the Ne2+ complex. The potential obtained in this way incorporates the potential curves for all six electronic states correlating with Ne(1S)+Ne+(2P) and the couplings between them. Coupled-channel calculations on the potential take account of breakdown of the Born–Oppenheimer approximation and provide an accurate description of the microwave rovibronic spectrum involving levels within ∼10 cm−1 of the first dissociation limit. The Ne2+ ions are both vibrationally and rotationally hot: the spectrum involves levels up to at least J=25/2 and there is evidence for transitions involving levels near the second dissociation limit. The long-range levels involved have 〈r〉 up to 12 Å, compared with an equilibrium bond length of 1.756 Å for the ground electronic state. The long-range parameters of the interaction can be extracted from the fit and are compared with recent theoretical values. © 2002 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Petrographic and sulphur isotope studies support the long-held contention that rounded grains of pyrite in siliciclastic sequences of the Late Archaean Witwatersrand Supergroup originated as placer grains. The grains are concentrated at sites where detrital heavy minerals are abundant within quartz-pebble conglomerates and quartzose sandstones. Depositional sites with abundant pyrite are: (1) within the matrix of bar-type, clast-supported conglomerates; (2) on scoured or winnowed surfaces; and (3) on stratification planes. The grains are internally compact or porous, with truncation of internal structure at outer margins indicating fragmentation and rounding of pyritic source-rocks during erosion and sediment transport. A large range in textures reflects source-rock lithologies, with known varieties linked to sedimentary-hosted diagenetic pyrite, volcanic-hosted massive sulphide deposits and hydrothermal pyrite. Laser ablation sulphur isotope analysis of pyrite reveals a broader range in δ34S values (− 5·3 to + 6·7‰) than that of previously reported conventional bulk-grain analyses (− 1 to + 4‰). Rounded pyrite from the Steyn Reef has significant variation in δ34S values (− 4·7 to + 6·7‰) that establishes heterogeneous sulphur compositions, with even adjacent grains having diverse isotopic signatures. The heterogeneity supports a placer origin for rounded pyrite. Euhedral pyrite and pyrite overgrowths which are undoubtedly authigenic have restricted δ34S values (− 0·5 to + 2·5‰), are chemically distinct from rounded pyrite and are probably the products of metamorphism or hydrothermal alteration. The placer origin of rounded pyrite indicates that pyrite was a stable heavy mineral during erosion and transport in the early atmosphere. Its distribution in three sequences (Witwatersrand Supergroup, Ventersdorp Contact Reef and Black Reef), and in other sequences not linked to Witwatersrand-type Au-U ore deposits, implies deposition of redox-sensitive detrital heavy minerals during the Late Archaean. Consequently, rounded grains of detrital pyrite are strong indicators of an oxygen-poor atmosphere. While not confirming a placer origin for gold in Witwatersrand Au-U ore deposits, the palaeoenvironmental significance of rounded pyrite negates its link to hydrothermal mineralization.

    Notes: The stx genes of many Shiga toxin-encoding Escherichia coli (STEC) strains are encoded by prophages of the λ bacteriophage family. In the genome of the Stx1-encoding phage H-19B, the stx1AB genes are found ≈ 1 kb downstream of the late phage promoter, pR′, but are known to be regulated by the associated iron-regulated promoter, pStx1. Growth of H-19B lysogens in low iron concentrations or in conditions that induce the prophage results in increased Stx1 production. Although the mechanism by which low iron concentration induces Stx1 production is well understood, the mechanisms by which phage induction enhances toxin production have not been extensively characterized. The studies reported here identify the factors that contribute to Stx1 production after induction of the H-19B prophage. We found that replication of the phage genome, with the associated increase in stx1AB copy number, is the most quantitatively important mechanism by which H-19B induction increases Stx1 production. Three promoters are shown to be involved in stx1AB transcription after phage induction, the iron-regulated pStx1 and the phage-regulated pR and pR′ promoters, the relative importance of which varies with environmental conditions. Late phage transcription initiating at the pR′ promoter, contrary to previous findings in the related Stx2-encoding phage φ361, was found to be unnecessary for high-level Stx1 production after phage induction. Finally, we present evidence that phage-mediated lysis regulates the quantity of Stx1 produced by determining the duration of Stx1 accumulation and provides a mechanism for Stx1 release. By amplifying stx1AB copy number, regulating stx1AB transcription and allowing for Stx1 release, the biology of the Stx-encoding phages contributes greatly to the production of Stx, the principal virulence factor of STEC.
