    Notes: High-n ballooning instabilities are studied with an initial-value code for toroidally rotating tokamaks, where n is a toroidal mode number. The effects of toroidal rotation are classified into two parts: (i) increase of effective pressure gradient due to the centrifugal force of the toroidal flow, and (ii) averaging of local magnetic equilibrium configuration over a period of poloidal angle in the case of finite flow-velocity shear. With the increase of effective pressure gradient in the rigid-rotation case, the growth rate of ballooning mode increases in the low-pressure regime as the toroidal flow velocity is increased, whereas it decreases in the high-pressure regime. The flow-velocity shear generally reduces the growth rate of the high-n ballooning mode by the averaging of the local equilibrium magnetic configuration. However, it is found that the ballooning mode becomes unstable by increasing the flow-velocity shear in a low-aspect-ratio tokamak. This is understood by the change of the local magnetic configuration, and by the changes of both the mode structure and the potential function in the ballooning space. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: summary  Soft denture lining materials were immersed into solutions of denture cleansers for 8 h at room temperature, and immersed into distilled water for the remainder of the 24-h period at 37 °C. Surface roughness of the soft denture lining materials was measured by contact type surface roughness instrument. For the colour stability test, soft denture lining materials were immersed in the denture cleansers as described above for 180 days. Finally, the colour changes of each material were quantitatively measured by a photometrical instrument to obtain the colour differences between newly processed specimen and immersed specimens (P 〈 0·01). An autopolymerizing silicone material, Evatouch, exhibited severe changes in surface roughness by all denture cleanser, and the generic material GC Denture Relining showed the minimal changes. Severe colour changes were also observed with some liner and cleanser combinations (P 〈 0·01). Except for Evatouth, the four silicone soft liners were more stable in surface roughness and in colour change than the two acrylic soft liners. One autopolymerizing silicone (GC denture relining) and one heat curing silicone (Molloplast B) demonstrated the best stability.

    Notes: This paper describes a measurement method for three-dimensional (3D) slit width deviations of long precision slot dies, which are essential for process control in manufacturing. A sensor unit consisting of two laser probes with their measurement axes aligned along the same Z-directional line but with opposite measurement directions, is placed between the two parts of the slot die to scan the two opposing surfaces of the parts along the X- and Y-axes. The variation of the sum of the laser probe outputs, which shows the deviation of the distance between the two surfaces, corresponds to the deviation of the slit width in the Z-direction. The 3D slit width deviations can be obtained accurately through scanning the entire surface in the X Y plane. In addition, the surface flatness of the parts can also be measured accurately by adding one more probe. Measurement experiments have been conducted on a precision grinding machine. The measurement results have indicated that the 3D slit width deviations and flatness can be measured with a repeatability error ofless than 1 micron, which meets the requirement for quality control of slot dies

    Notes: Abstract Background. Bisphosphonates are bone resorption inhibitors which are effective in the treatment of diseases of increased bone turnover, such as hypercalcemia of malignancy and osteolytic bone metastasis. The safety and efficacy of incadronate, a third-generation bisphosphonate, were evaluated in breast cancer patients with bone metastases. Methods. Fifteen breast cancer patients with bone metastasis were enrolled. Incadronate's safety, its effectiveness in relieving bone pain, and its effects on bone metabolic markers and a tumor marker were assessed in 8 patients treated with a 10-mg IV infusion once a week for 5 weeks (10 mg × 5), 3 patients treated with a single 20-mg IV infusion (20 mg × 1), and 4 patients treated with a 20-mg IV infusion once a week for 5 weeks (20 mg × 5). Pain assessment was performed only in the patients with the repeated infusion regimens. Results. All incadronate treatment regimens were administered without any serious adverse reactions. Minimal fever was noted in 6 patients, but it subsided without any treatment. Incadronate relieved bone pain in 10 of the 12 patients who received repeated infusions. Levels of bone resorption markers dropped transiently, but the decreases in the individual markers of bone resorption varied. Levels of bone formation markers did not change significantly. Levels of a tumor marker specific to breast cancer, carbohydrate antigen (CA)15-3 decreased in patients whose metastases were limited to bone. Conclusion. The third-generation bisphosphonate, incadronate, was administered safely at dosages of up to 20 mg once a week for 5 weeks. Incadronate reduced bone pain, bone resorption marker levels, and CA15-3 tumor marker levels in breast cancer patients with bone metastases.
