Notes: A filter using a transmission line formed by a cascade connection of inverted L-type networks has been developed to reject the distortion of the probe characteristics by rf (radio-frequency) noise. Each inverse L network consists of two coaxial cables with the same physical constant and length. The filter can remove discrete frequency components including the fundamental and harmonic components, the cut-off frequencies being determined by the distributed circuit constant and the length of the cables. By inserting different kinds of the network in cascade, many noise components associated with the rf frequency can be eliminated at the end section of the filter. Experiments have been performed in rf plasmas by inserting three kinds of inverted L networks with the frequency f (13.56 MHz), 2 f and 4f as the cut-off frequency. Distortion free probe characteristics have been obtained, from which accurate determination of plasma parameter such as the electron energy distribution is possible. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: A YAG laser Thomson scattering system has been developed to measure the time evolution of electron temperature (Te) and density (ne) profiles in the JT-60U. Presently this system provides Te and ne periodically every 100 ms (20 ms at the minimum) at 15 spatial channels. A six spectrum channel polychromator, which is a successive interference filter type, was designed to measure a wide Te range (20 eV–20 keV) by using five channels. The sixth channel is used for calibration by Rayleigh scattering. However, we also used the Rayleigh channel to measure Te and ne since the stray light level was very low. As a result, we were able to measure temperatures below 20 eV. The temperature of the silicon avalanche photodiode (APD) is stabilized by a Péltier element so that the gain is kept constant within ±0.5%. The stable performance of the APD enables accurate Te and ne measurement. During plasma operation, the electron temperature is measured over a wide range from the low temperature plasmas in the runaway plasma current tail generated by a killer pellet to the high temperatures of high performance negative shear plasmas. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Background Pollens from species of Cupressaceae family are one of the most important causes of respiratory allergies worldwide. In Japan, many patients with pollinosis have specific IgE to both pollens of Japanese cypress (Chamaecyparis obtusa) and Japanese cedar (Cryptomeria japonica). The sequences between Cha o 1 and Cry j 1, the major allergens of Japanese cypress and Japanese cedar pollens, respectively, are 80% identical. Objective This study was undertaken to identify T cell epitopes in Cha o 1, and to elucidate the mechanism of cross-allergenicity between Cha o 1 and Cry j 1, at the T cell level. Methods T cell epitopes in Cha o 1 were identified by the reactivity of T cell lines, generated from 19 patients, to stimulation with overlapping peptides. The subsets of T cell clones specific to rCha o 1 were determined according to their ability to produce IL-4 and IFN-γ. Peptide specificities of two T cell clones were determined by stimulation with the peptides from Cha o 1 and Cry j 1.Results Four dominant and six subdominant T cell epitopes were identified in Cha o 1. While four T cell epitopes, p11-30, p211-230, p251-270 and p331-350, were common to Cha o 1 and Cry j 1, 4 T cell epitopes, p61-80, p71-90, p311-330 and p321-340, were considered to be unique to Cha o 1. The subsets of T cell clones were predominantly of T helper2-type. One T cell clone recognized p16-30, which is common to Cha o 1 and Cry j 1, but another recognized p321-330, which is unique to Cha o 1.Conclusion Presence of both T cells reactive to T cell epitopes common to Cha o 1 and Cry j 1 and T cells specific to T cell epitopes unique to Cha o 1 in patients with pollinosis contributes to prolonged symptoms after the cedar pollen season in March and the following cypress pollen season in April.

Notes: Using a fatigue-testing method by which a fatigue crack can be propagated in a film adhered to cover an elliptical through-hole in a base plate, annealed rolled copper films have been fatigued. The effects of rolling textures and annealing twin boundaries on fatigue crack propagation behaviour are discussed. The fatigue crack propagates in a large zigzag pattern in the TC specimen (crack perpendicular to the rolling direction), while the crack propagation path in the RC specimen (crack parallel to the rolling direction) is nearly straight. Further, the fatigue cracks propagate slower toward the perpendicular direction than toward the parallel direction. After fatigue testing, the crystallographic characteristic of rolling textures around the fatigue crack in the annealed film is analysed using the EBSD (electron backscatter diffraction) system. Because the annealing twin boundary is in the same plane as the slip of the face-centred-cubic metal, the fatigue crack tends to propagate along the slip line initiated along the annealing twin boundary.

Notes: We describe two patients with lesions clinically resembling pseudoxanthoma elasticum and histologically exhibiting focal elastosis. with normal-appearing elastic fibres in the mid- and deep dermis. We consider that these skin lesions represent a previously undescribed entity, whose pathogenesis appears to be related to the ageing process.

Notes: [Auszug] Monolithic ceramics are not widely used as structural materials because of their brittleness. Ceramic matrix composites, in which whiskers or fibres of strong ceramics such as silicon carbide or silicon nitride are embedded in a ceramic matrix, offer improved toughness and strength because the ...

Notes: [Auszug] Among the simple diatomic molecules, oxygen is of particular interest because it shows magnetism at low temperatures. Moreover, at pressures exceeding 95 GPa (∼0.95 Mbar), solid molecular oxygen becomes metallic, accompanied by a structural transition. The metallization ...

Notes: Anodizing is used widely in the surface treatment of aluminium alloys for aerospace applications. Considers recent advances in understanding of the influences of alloying elements in anodizing of aluminium alloys and, in particular, their applicability to second phase particles during anodizing of commercial alloys. Through more precise knowledge of the response of second phase materials to anodic polarization, improved anodizing and related surface treatment processes may be developed in order to enhance the performance of aluminium alloys.
