Notizen: Sedimentation rate and changes in relative sea level affect early diagenetic cementation along key stratal surfaces within the deeply buried Upper Jurassic Fulmar Formation, South Central Graben, UKCS. As a result of the bioturbated nature of the shallow marine strata, variations in ichnofabrics and cross-cutting relationships between trace fossils are important in identifying and correlating stratal surfaces. Two transgressive and two regressive surfaces/sequence boundaries were studied, using petrographical, mineralogical and geochemical techniques. Cements, including early diagenetic pyrite framboids, grain-rimming apatite, microcrystalline dolomite and ankerite, occur at, above and immediately below both transgressive and forced regressive surfaces/sequence boundaries. Breaks or subdued rates of sedimentation associated with both types of surfaces meant that the sediment package resided within early diagenetic zones for prolonged periods of time, enhancing diagenetic reactions at and below the surfaces. The distribution of ankerite, despite being a deep-burial cement, was primarily controlled by concentrations of bioclasts that are particularly abundant at transgressive surfaces. The diagenetic character of the forced regressive surfaces/sequence boundaries is more complex than that of the transgressive surfaces, both in terms of mineralogy and paragenesis. This is attributed to the superimposition of diagenetic assemblages as a result of erosion, re-sedimentation and sediment by-passing. Although the diagenetic signature of the surfaces has been modified by dissolution/replacement reactions during deep burial, early diagenetic signatures can still be distinguished.

Notizen: Geophysical measurements of a single physical property provide weak constraints on the large-scale porosity structure of the sea-floor. This limitation arises from fundamental principles which may be overcome by examing two independent pieces of information. As an example, electrical resistivity values and seismic compres-sional velocities from the East Pacific Rise at 13°N are simultaneously compared to various combinations of empirical expressions. the best agreement between theory and the data sets is found using either the connected Hashin-Shtrikman bound or, equivalently, Archie's law with a low value of exponent to describe the resistivities, and Wyllie's time-average equation for the seismic velocities. the combination implicitly requires a connected fluid distribution and, hence, a highly permeable crust throughout the uppermost 1 km of sea-floor. Porosities in the surface regions remain poorly constrained. Assuming a fluid temperature below 15°C predicts porosities of at least 20 per cent in the uppermost 50 m, decreasing to less than 1 per cent at depths around 1 km. Permeabilities of around 5 X 10−12m2 are inferred for the surface regions decreasing to 3 × 10−17 m2 at depth. The method described should prove useful in constraining the structure in older sea-floor as more resistivity profiles are gathered along with seismic data.

Notizen: Abstract Measurement of the differential cross-sections of proton-proton scattering at an energy of 3 GeV is described. The measurement was performed in the region of angles from 2·4° to 16·2°. Analysis of the experimental data shows that besides the imaginary scattering amplitude a real part is also necessary in order to describe elastic scattering at an energy of 3 GeV; the magnitude of the real part is 24% of the magnitude of the imaginary part.

Notizen: Abstract Elastic pd scattering at an energy of 8 GeV was studied by means of the improved method of the multiple passage of protons through a target 0·6 μm thick, made of (CD2) n . It was determined from an analysis of the differential cross-section that the magnitude of the real part of the amplitude is 26% of the magnitude of the imaginary part. The real part of the elastic pn scattering amplitude was calculated using the results of the study of the elastic pp scattering at an energy of 8 GeV; its magnitude is 30% of the magnitude of the imaginary part.

Notizen: Abstract The artificial UTP-analogue 5-bromouridine 5′-triphosphate (BrUTP) has been used to label pre-mRNAin vitro andin vivo [1, 2]. We have investigated the effect of bromouridine (BrU) in pre-mRNA on the efficiency of splicing. An adenovirus major late II construct was used to prepare four different transcripts, each containing a different amount of BrU. These four transcripts were tested in anin vitro splicing assay. We found that splicing is strongly inhibited if all uridines (U) in the transcript were substituted for BrU. Splicing was restored to some extent if 50% of the Us were replaced by BrU. The splicing efficiency returned to an almost normal level if only I out of every 10 Us was substituted for BrU. This demonstrates that only a pre-mRNA containing a small amount of BrU can be spliced normallyin vitro. Furthermore, these results strongly suggest that some Us in the adenoviral transcript, probably those at the splice sites, cannot be replaced by BrU and are therefore critical in the splicing reaction.
