    Notes: Individual-based models (IBMs) allow the explicit inclusion of individual variation in greater detail than do classical differential-equation and difference-equation models. Inclusion of such variation is important for continued progress in ecological and evolutionary theory. We provide a conceptual basis for IBMs by describing five major types of individual variation in IBMs: spatial, ontogenetic, phenotypic, cognitive, and genetic. IBMs are now used in almost all subfields of ecology and evolutionary biology. We map those subfields and look more closely at selected key papers on fish recruitment, forest dynamics, sympatric speciation, metapopulation dynamics, maintenance of diversity, and species conservation. Theorists are currently divided on whether IBMs represent only a practical tool for extending classical theory to more complex situations, or whether individual-based theory represents a radically new research program. We feel that the tension between these two poles of thinking can be a source of creativity in ecology and evolutionary theory.

    Notes: The paper presents a dynamic general-equilibrium model of interindustry North–South trade that is used to analyze the effects of trade liberalization on the Northern wage distribution. Both countries have a low-tech sector where consumer goods of constant quality are produced by use of unskilled labor. The North also has a high-tech sector that employs skilled labor and features a quality-ladder model structure with endogenous growth. Both innovation and skill acquisition rates are endogenously determined. In a balanced trade equilibrium, it is found that Southern-originated (Northern-originated) trade liberalization leads to an increase (decrease) in Northern wage inequality both between skilled and unskilled workers and within the group of skilled workers. The endogenous change in the Southern terms of trade determines the direction of change in unskilled wages in both the North and the South.

    Notes: Over the past twenty years, the R&D-based agricultural biotechnology industry has exhibited cyclical behavior in consolidation. This paper provides a positive, theoretical model of endogenous R&D, in which the number of firms engaged in R&D exhibits cyclical behavior. Additional, empirically testable, behavioral characteristics of the model cycle include: the level of R&D activity is pro-cyclical, mergers and acquisitions activity and the time to discovery of the next innovation are counter-cyclical, and the duration of cyclic peaks (periods of high firm numbers) is short relative to periods of low firm numbers. The implication that the distribution of firm numbers over time is multi-modal is consistent with empirical evidence and is in contrast to studies of firm numbers in other industries. One policy implication is that anti-trust actions in agricultural biotechnology should be based on observed persistent, rather than cyclic, concentration.

    Notes: For highly exothermic catalytic reactions particular measures have to be taken for obtaining reliable kinetic and mechanistic information, which has been preferably determined under the prevalence of isothermicity, and which is not disguised by transport processes. If this is true such kinetics can be reliably extrapolated to conditions outside the frame of experimental conditions. To this end various reactor set-ups are presented and their operation is illustrated by some case studies.The temperature-scanning reactor, which is not inherently isothermal, is included since non-isothermicity is not an obstacle to easy kinetic data assessment. Its performance is clarified by estimating kinetic parameters for the ammonia synthesis at elevated pressure using a commercial catalyst.Two types of novel micro-structured reactors are presented which have been applied for two highly exothermic catalytic reactions, i.e., the oxidative dehydrogenation of propane (ODP) and the ammonia oxidation to N2, N2O and NO. These studies served the purpose of getting mechanistic insights into the reaction mechanisms of both reactions, to validate a kinetic scheme for the ODP reaction and to derive the estimates of the respective kinetic parameters.Finally, a reactor for transient experiments in the peak pressure range of 1 to 10 Pa has been used for studying reaction steps related to the catalytic ammonia oxidation under isothermal conditions. Isothermal studies are possible due to the low concentrations of reactants by which any undesired hot spots on the catalyst surface were suppressed.The instrumental arsenal described is an asset for both fundamental as well as applied work in studying exothermic catalytic reactions.

    Notes: Objectives  Plasma volume expansion may benefit both mother and child in the temporising management of severe and early onset hypertensive disorders of pregnancy.Design  Randomised clinical trial.Setting  Two university hospitals in Amsterdam, The Netherlands.Population  Two hundred and sixteen patients with a gestational age between 24 and 34 completed weeks with severe pre-eclampsia, haemolysis, elevated liver enzymes and low platelets (HELLP) syndrome or severe fetal growth restriction (FGR) with pregnancy-induced hypertension, admitted between 1 April 2000 and 31 May 2003.Methods  One hundred and eleven patients were randomly allocated to the treatment group, (plasma volume expansion and a diastolic BP target of 85–95 mmHg) and 105 to the control group (intravenous fluid restriction and BP target of 95–105 mmHg).Main outcome measures  Neonatal neurological development at term age (Prechtl score), perinatal death, neonatal morbidity and maternal morbidity.Results  Baseline characteristics were comparable between groups. The median gestational age was 30 weeks. In the treatment group, patients received higher amounts of intravenous fluids (median 813 mL/day vs 14 mL/day; P 〈 0.001) with a concomitant decreased haemoglobin count (median −0.6 vs−0.2 mmol/L; P 〈 0.001). Neither neurological scores nor composite neonatal morbidity differed. A trend towards less prolongation of pregnancy (median 7.4 vs 11.5 days; P= 0.054) and more infants requiring oxygen treatment 〉21% (66 vs 46; P= 0.09) in the treatment group was observed. There was no difference in major maternal morbidity (total 11%), but there were more caesarean sections in the treatment group (98%vs 90%; P 〈 0.05).Conclusion  The addition of plasma volume expansion in temporising treatment does not improve maternal or fetal outcome in women with early preterm hypertensive complications of pregnancy.

    Notes: 1. Research has often focused on pelagic food chains and processes of lakes; less is known about the contribution of benthic energy flows to whole-lake ecosystem energetics. This stems from the fact that the shoreline and littoral habitats, which provide a key linkage between sediment and water column, have only recently become a significant focus for study.2. This study aimed to quantify the feeding and phosphorus allocation of a juvenile fish community in a littoral zone of a shallow lake in response to the biomass succession of the invertebrate prey community. Habitats comprising reed and adjacent open water were sampled over two consecutive years during day and night.3. Although there were substantial year-to-year differences in the biomass of invertebrates, the fish community composition, diet consumption rates and phosphorus allocations were very similar in both study years. Biomasses and predation impacts by juvenile fish on prey groups were substantially higher within the reeds than in the adjacent open water habitat. This may be explained by the refuge-seeking behaviour of the fish.4. In general, invertebrates were negligibly influenced by fish feeding, with the exception for a strong top-down control of large cladocerans. In response to the resulting low Daphnia biomass, fish were forced to switch to a higher degree of benthivory. Consequently, juvenile fish in littoral reed stands may shift benthic-derived energy and phosphorus via the excretion of soluble reactive phosphorus into the open water.

    Notes: The mechanisms of embryo-maternal communication during the first days of embryonic life are largely unknown. Using the bovine as a model, the aims of our study were to morphologically characterize the interaction between the pre-implantation embryo and the epithelium of the maternal ampulla, isthmus and uterotubal junction by light and scanning electron microscopy. For this purpose, oviducts were removed from cows revealing a functional corpus luteum on day 3 after insemination. These were compared to oviducts removed on day 3 (metestrus) of the estrous cycle. Three days after insemination, the majority of the epithelial cells in the ampulla were secretory cells distinctly protruding into the oviductal lumen. Contrary the ampulla of cows on day 3 of the cycle predominantly revealed ciliated cells in the oviductal epithelium. As shown by Periodic Acid Schiff reaction (PAS) with and without amylase digestion, the secretory cells of the ampulla synthesized merely glycoproteins during metestrus, but large amounts of glycogen during pregnancy. In the isthmus no morphological differences were seen between pregnant and cyclic cows. The most conspicuous finding during pregnancy was seen in the uterotubal junction: Vital cumulus cells embedded in between epithelial cells had developed short cytoplasmic processes intensely contacting the epithelial uterine cells. The embryos obtained ex vivo were regularly covered with a thick layer of homogenous extracellular matrix. Contrary embryos produced in vitro– both with and without coculture with oviductal cells –revealed a clearly visible zona pellucida with spongy appearance and numerous pores. Our results imply that already during the first days of life there is intense interaction of the pre-implantation embryo and the maternal genital tract part of which may be mediated by cumulus cells.

    Notes: A substantial body of research has been conducted on transboundary water, transboundary water law, and the mitigation of transboundary water conflict. However, most of this work has focused primarily on surface water supplies. While it is well understood that aquifers cross international boundaries and that the base flow of international river systems is often derived in part from ground water, transboundary ground water and surface water systems are usually managed under different regimes, resulting in what has been described as “hydroschizophrenia.” Adding to the problem, the hydrologic relationships between surface and ground water supplies are only known at a reconnaissance level in even the most studied international basins, and thus even basic questions regarding the territorial sovereignty of ground water resources often remain unaddressed or even unasked. Despite the tensions inherent in the international setting, riparian nations have shown tremendous creativity in approaching regional development, often through preventive diplomacy, and the creation of “baskets of benefits,” which allow for positive-sum, integrative allocations of joint gains. In contrast to the notion of imminent water wars, the history of hydropolitical relations worldwide has been overwhelmingly cooperative. Limited ground water management in the international arena, coupled with the fact that few states or countries regulate the use of ground water, begs the question: will international borders serve as boundaries for increased “flows” of hydrologic information and communication to maintain strategic aquifers, or will increased competition for shared ground water resources lead to the potential loss of strategic aquifers and “no flows” for both ground water users?
