    Notes: Oxidative metabolism and cerebral blood flow (CBF) are two of the most important measures in neuroimaging. However, results from concurrent imaging of the two with high spatial and temporal resolution have never been published. We used flavoprotein autofluorescence (AF) and laser speckle imaging (LSI) in the anaesthetized rat to map oxidative metabolism and CBF in response to single vibrissa stimulation. Autofluorescence responses reflecting oxidative metabolism demonstrated a fast increase with a delay of 0.1 s. The sign-reversed speckle contrast reflecting CBF started to rise with a delay of 0.6 s and reached its maximum 1.4 s after the stimulation offset. The fractional signal changes were 2.0% in AF and 9.7% in LSI. Pixelwise modelling revealed that CBF maps spread over an area up to 2.5-times larger than metabolic maps. The results provide evidence that the increase in cerebral oxidative metabolism in response to sensory stimulation is considerably faster and more localized than the CBF response. This suggests that future developments in functional imaging concentrating on the metabolic response promise an increased spatial resolution.

    Notes: A closed-form analytical solution for the inversion of the integral equation relating small-angle scattering intensity distributions of two-phase systems to chord-length distributions is presented. The result is generalized to arbitrary derivatives of higher order of the autocorrelation function and to arbitrary projections of the scattering intensity (including slit collimation). This inverse transformation offers an elegant way to investigate the impact of certain features, e.g. singularities, in the chord-length distribution or its higher-order derivatives on the scattering curve, e.g. oscillatory components in the asymptotic behavior at a large scattering vector. Several examples are discussed.

    Notes: Abstract An innovative approach to nondestructive evaluation (NDE) using noncontacting optical sensors has demonstrated. In this effort a single mode optical fiber interferometer (OFI) was used to sense the presence and form of Rayleigh waves traveling along the surface of a steel test bar at a velocity of nearly 3mm/µs. Acousto-optic time-domain data was successfully used to detect the presence and locate the position of a test “flaw” (a machined slot) in the bar, and spectrum analysis was used to estimate its geometry and size. This approach has many potential applications in the ultrasonic evaluation of real flaws in structures with complex geometries. Coupled with the authors' earlier work demonstrating the feasibility of generating acoustic waves in metals using laser light pulses transmitted through the fiber optic probes, this latest achievement points to the development of a fully noncontacting, fiber optic based thermal-acousto-photonic (TAP) NDE system, with potential applications to the reliability testing of many important structures where composition, scale, geometry, or restricted access preclude the use of conventional NDE techniques.

    Notes: Abstract A new method for analyzing low-order moiréfringe patterns of displacement fields is presented. This method adapts the techniques of half-fringe photoelasticity to moiré and extracts continuous displacement information in the regions between integral fringes. The effectiveness of the technique is illustrated with three examples: a uniform uniaxial field, a tapered specimen in tension, and a disk in diametral compression.

    Description / Table of Contents: Abstract Two cases of severe spinal cord injuries to professional horse-racing jockeys are presented. There is only one comprehensive study conducted to ascertain the nature and incidence of injuries in the literature. The pathomechanism and surgical therapy of vertebral trauma in jockeys was analysed.
    Notes: Zusammenfassung Es werden zwei schwere Wirbelsäulenverletzungen bei professionellen Jockeys vorgestellt. Der Pathomechanismus wurde anhand einer Videoaufzeichnung des Unfallhergangs analysiert. Die aktuellen Therapiekonzepte werden nach Darstellung der Literatur diskutiert. Die schwere Wirbelsäulenverletzung des Jockeys ist ein Arbeitsunfall und bedarf der interdisziplinären Diagnostik und Therapie.
