Notizen: Singly charged cations of silver atoms and clusters (Agn+, n=1,3,5,7,9) were deposited on highly oriented pyrolytic graphite substrates at well-controlled, various collision energies. The total amount of Ag atoms remaining on the substrates after collision was quantified by measuring the Ag 3d5/2 photoelectron intensities. The collision energy dependence of the amount of deposited Ag atoms revealed that, for all the species, there are three distinct energy regions, for which soft landing, rebounding, or implantation is a dominant process, and that the energy ranges for the processes strongly depend on the cluster size. The deposition efficiency vs collision energy curve for each cluster is well fitted to that for Ag1, by considering the difference between the contact area of Ag1 with the surface and that of the cluster, reflecting the compactness of the clusters. Boundaries between the different deposition regimes for the clusters were less distinct than those for Ag1. Considering anisotropy in shape of a cluster, deposition efficiency around the implantation threshold was calculated, which well explains the indistinctness of the threshold observed in the experimental data. This supports the picture that the energy given to a unit surface area determines the collision process. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

Notizen: The susceptibility to photoinhibition of tree species from three different successional stages were examined using chlorophyll fluorescence and gas exchange techniques. The three deciduous broadleaf tree species were Betula platyphylla var. japonica, pioneer and early successional, Quercus mongolica, intermediate shade-tolerant and mid-successional, and Acer mono, shade-tolerant and late successional. Tree seedlings were raised under three light regimes: full sunlight (open), 10% full sun, and 5% full sun. Susceptibility to photoinhibition was assessed on the basis of the recovery kinetics of the ratio of vaviable to maximum fluorescence (Fv/Fm) of detached leaf discs exposed to about 2000 μmol m−1 s−1 photon flux density (PFD) for 2 h under controlled conditions (25 to 28 °C, fully hydrated). Differences in susceptibility to photodamage among species were not significant in the open and 10% full sun treatments. But in 5% full sun, B. platyphylla sustained a significantly greater photodamage than other species, probably associated with having the lowest photosynthetic capacity indicated by light-saturated photosynthetic rate (B. platyphylla, 9·87, 5·85 and 2·82; Q. mongolica, 8·05, 6·28 and 4·41; A. mono, 7·93, 6·11 and 5·08 μmol CO2 m−1 s−1for open, 10% and 5% full sun, respectively). To simulate a gap formation and assess its complex effects including high temperature and water stress in addition to strong light on the susceptibility to photoinhibition, we examined photoinhibition in the field by means of monitoring ΔF/F′m on the first day of transfer to natural daylight. Compared with ΔF/F′m in AM, the lower ΔF/F′m in PM responding to lower PFD following high PFD around noon indicated that photoinhibition occurred in plants grown in 10 and 5% full sun. The diurnal changes of ΔF/F′m showed that Q. mongolica grown in 5% full sun was less susceptible to photoinhibition than A. mono although they showed little differences both in photosynthetic capacity in intact leaves and susceptibility to photoinhibition based on leaf disc measurements. These results suggest that shade-grown Q. mongolica had a higher tolerance for additional stresses such as high temperature and water stress in the field, possibly due to their lower plasticity in leaf anatomy to low light environment.

Notizen: Summary The RBE of Cf-252 neutron irradiation was determined for hemopoietic tissue using spleen CFU-S. Radiosensitivity was compared to acute Cobalt-60 radiation and low dose rate Cesium-137 under identical irradiation conditions. The RBE for the neutron component of the Cf-252 radiation was 2.1. No dose rate effect was observed for hemopoietic CFU-S to acute doses or low dose rate photon irradiation.

Notizen: Summary The Ca2+-activated nonselective cation channel in mouse pancreatic acini has been studied with the help of patch-clamp single-channel current recording in both the cell-attached conformation and in excised inside-out membrane patches. In intact resting mouse pancreatic acinar cells no unitary activity was observed. Adding saponin to the bath solution to disrupt the plasma membrane (apart from the isolated patch membrane from which current recording was made) evoked unitary inward current steps when the free ionized Ca2+ concentration in the bath ([Ca2+] i ) was 5×10−8 m or above. When an electrically isolated patch membrane was excised and the internal aspects of the plasma membrane were exposed to the bath solution, channel activation could be obtained when [Ca2+] i was 10−7 m or above. However, with the passage of time the total inward current declined and about 1 min after excision no unitary current steps could be observed. At this stage Ca2+ in micromolar concentration was needed to open the channels and several hundred micromoles of Ca2+ per liter were required for maximal channel activation. Our results indicate that the Ca2+-activated nonselective cation channel is more sensitive to internal Ca2+ than hitherto understood and that it may therefore play a role under physiological conditions in intact cells.

Notizen: Conclusion The simple model shown in Fig. 1 can be used to explain pancreatic acinar stimulus-secretion coupling by assuming that the Ca-activated cation channel is not perfectly selective for mono-valent cations, but enables a very slight leak of divalent cations. Stimulation by ACh or CCK releases intracellular Ca (probably from the plasma membrane) raising [Ca++]i. This opens up the 30–35 pS channels giving rise to Na influx and depolarization. At the same time Ca can leak into the cells through the same channels, maintaining an elevated [Ca++]i. Removal of agonist (and/or inclusion of antagonist) causes a rapid reuptake of Ca into the trigger pool (Stolze and Schulz 1980) causing a decrease in [Ca++]i and closure of the channel with rapid return to the resting potential and the resting [Ca++]i.
