Notes: We have performed composition depth profiles and other structural experiments on Gd/Co multilayers and bilayers. Analysis of Auger depth profiles indicates a strongly asymmetric diffusion, especially of Co into the Gd layers. In multilayers, it is found that Co diffuses throughout the Gd layers and forms a Gd1−xCox amorphous alloy (x=0.29–0.35) that is limited at nearly the eutectic composition (x=0.37). Therefore, if the Co layers are nominally not too thin ((approximately-greater-than)3 nm), the multilayer mainly comprises an amorphous layers of composition around Gd0.7Co0.3 and layers of pure Co. Thin Co layers (3–7 nm) present broad halos in x-ray diffraction scans at wave vectors characteristics of pure cobalt. Thick layers ((approximately-greater-than)10 nm) show crystalline peaks with a coherence size (ξ⊥) shorter than its own layer thickness, suggesting the existence of amorphous phases next to the interface. This can be explained by the growth of pure and amorphous Co up to a thickness of 2–4 nm on the amorphous Gd alloy seed, but further Co deposition consists of hcp crystalline grains. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: The interdiffusion process between Gd and Co has been investigated in several series of multilayered films consisting of Co and different GdCo alloys (Gd1−xCox)/Co (x=0, 0.37, and 0.60). Grazing incidence x-ray profiles provided a preliminary insight into the structure of the samples. Electrical resistivity measurements were performed in a temperature range between 8 and 300 K. For the three series, the room temperature electrical resistivity shows a clear fall once a critical Co thickness is surpassed, which we interpret as due to the growth of pure polycrystalline Co between the alloy layers. A simple model allows us to quantify the amount of Co diffused into the alloy layer. The results will be discussed considering the possible decrease of interdiffusion effects when Co is deposited onto the more stable GdCo alloys. This leads to a well defined multilayered structure, something that is essential for practical applications and for the theoretical study of its underlying physics. © 2002 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Abstract The aim of this article is to analyze, from an aggregate perspective, the differences in personal saving rates among the Spanish regions at the NUTS II level from 1986 to 1994. In accordance with the postulates of the life cycle hypothesis, we present the main economic determinants for personal saving rates obtained from an aggregate personal saving model. Correcting for temporal and spatial dependence in the empirical model, the analysis suggests the existence of a significant and negative relationship between aggregate personal saving rates and wealth, access to credit and direct tax burdens. Likewise, a nearly significant positive relationship between personal saving rates and per capita gross disposable personal income has been detected.

Notes: Abstract In an attempt to find clues for the significance of the gene ordering along the eukaryotic chromosome, a system consisting of germinating conidia of Neurospora crassa was studied. Thirteen enzyme activities corresponding to genes widely distributed on five chromosomes were determined in dormant and in germinating conidia. Ten of these enzymes showed lower activities in the resting state, and the time patterns of their increase were determined during germination. The results obtained do not support a scheme of sequential expression of genes during the emergence from dormancy as a counterpart of the sequence of the corresponding genes along the chromosome. Two of the loci studied were analyzed both in the normal (wild-type) ordering and in a translocated position in which the two genes are located in an inverted order respective to the centromere and farther apart from it. The altered order of the genes did not influence significantly the time and pattern of increase in the activities of the corresponding enzymes.

Notes: Abstract We show that if certain Poincaré-like integrals are conserved, then to each configuration coordinate of a system an entity can be associated that is an acceptable generalization of the notion of canonical momentum: In the particular case of standard mechanics, the canonical momenta are retrieved. Under certain general restrictions, the Poincaré momenta make sense for either mechanical or general systems for which we do not have (or are not aware of) entities (like the Lagrangian) that are generally used to define the momentum. The Poincaré momentum may also make sense for systems whose characteristics are difficult, or impossible, to reconcile with the notion of the usual canonical momentum. It is also relevant for certain cases where a Lagrangian exists, but it leads to a mixture of physical and unphysical entities. In particular, we show that while physical canonical momenta do not generally exist in the new Nambu mechanics (because of the dimensionality of state vector space), the Poincaré momenta exist, they are physical, and have the properties we could have expected for the mechanics.

Notes: Abstract In former papers a representation of the quantum Fermi and para-Fermi fields was proposed. This representation is such that the only basic quantum entities are Bose quantum fields. In this paper we show several possibilities of application: (i) to lower the number of “elementary” particles; (ii) to describe as separate states of a fundamental particle other particles that presently are considered as different, and to induce an ordering among them; (iii) to obtain relations among the quantum numbers of those particles; (iv) to obtain a physical picture of some unstable particles. This article is concerned with the physical interpretation of the formalism, and some of the statements that are contained here have a conjectural character.
