Notes: Abstract. We employ data taken by the JADE and OPAL experiments for an integrated QCD study in hadronic e $^+$ e $^-$ annihilations at c.m.s. energies ranging from 35 GeV through 189 GeV. The study is based on jet-multiplicity related observables. The observables are obtained to high jet resolution scales with the JADE, Durham, Cambridge and cone jet finders, and compared with the predictions of various QCD and Monte Carlo models. The strong coupling strength, $\alpha_s$ , is determined at each energy by fits of ${\cal O}(\alpha_s^2)$ calculations, as well as matched ${\cal O}(\alpha_s^2)$ and NLLA predictions, to the data. Matching schemes are compared, and the dependence of the results on the choice of the renormalization scale is investigated. The combination of the results using matched predictions gives \[\alpha_s(M_{Z^0})=0.1187^{0.0034}_{0.0019}.\] The strong coupling is also obtained, at lower precision, from ${\cal O}(\alpha_s^2)$ fits of the c.m.s. energy evolution of some of the observables. A qualitative comparison is made between the data and a recent MLLA prediction for mean jet multiplicities.

Notes: Abstract. Searches for resonant $\tilde\nu$ production in e + e - collisions under the assumption that R-parity is not conserved and that the dominant R-parity violating coupling is $\lambda_{121}$ or $\lambda_{131}$ used data recorded by DELPHI in 1997 to 2000 at centre-of-mass energies of 183 to 208 GeV. No deviation from the Standard Model was observed. Upper limits are given for the $\lambda_{121}$ and $\lambda_{131}$ couplings as a function of the sneutrino mass and total width. The limits are especially stringent for sneutrino masses equal to the centre-of-mass energies with the highest integrated luminosities recorded.

Notes: Abstract. Events containing only energetic photons are analysed in a sample of $628 \mathrm{pb}^{-1}$ of data recorded from $\rm e^+e^-$ collisions at centre-of-mass energies between 189 and 209 GeV by the ALEPH detector at LEP. The $e^+ e^-\to \nu\bar{\nu}\gamma(\gamma)$ and $e^+ e^-\to \gamma\gamma(\gamma)$ cross sections are measured and found to be in agreement with the standard model predictions. The number of light neutrino generations is determined to be $N_\nu = 2.86 \pm 0.09$ . Upper limits are derived on the cross sections for photon production in the context of several supersymmetric models. Limits are also set on the parameters of models with extra spatial dimensions, with contact interactions and with excited electrons.

Notes: Abstract. The energy spectrum and the cross section of photonuclear interactions of 180 GeV muons in iron were measured at the CERN SPS using prototype modules of the ATLAS hadron calorimeter. The differential cross section $(N_{A}/A)v{d}\sigma/{d}v$ for a muon fractional energy loss $v = \Delta E_{\mu} / E_{\mu}$ was measured in the range 0.1〈v〈1. The integrated cross section $(N_{A}/A) \int_{0.1}^{1} v{d}\s igma/{d}v$ is $(0.26 \pm 0.03_{stat} \pm 0.03_{syst})\cdot 10^{-6}$ cm2g-1 in agreement with the theoretical prediction of $0.267 \cdot 10^{-6}$ cm2g-1. The best adjustment of the data to the theory is achieved for the value of $\sigma_{\gamma N} = (115 \pm 18_stat \pm 15_{syst})\mu {b}$ of the photon-nucleon cross section for photons with energies in the range from 18 to 180 GeV.

Notes: Abstract. The inclusive production of D $^{*\pm}$ mesons in two-photon collisions is measured with the ALEPH detector at e+e- centre-of-mass energies from 183 GeV to 209 GeV. A total of $360 \pm 27$ D $^{*\pm}$ meson events are observed from an integrated luminosity of 699pb-1. Contributions from direct and single-resolved processes are separated using the ratio of the transverse momentum $p_{t}^{D^{*\pm}}$ of the D $^{*\pm}$ to the visible invariant mass Wvis of the event. Differential cross sections of D $^{*\pm}$ production as functions of $p_{t}^{D^{*\pm}}$ and the pseudorapidity $\vert\eta^{D^{*\pm}}\vert $ are measured in the range 2 GeV $/c 〈 p_{t}^{D^{*\pm}} 〈 12$ GeV/c and $ \vert\eta^{D^{*\pm}}\vert 〈 1.5 $ . They are compared to next-to-leading order (NLO) perturbative QCD calculations. The extrapolation of the integrated visible D $^{*\pm}$ cross section to the total charm cross section, based on the Pythia Monte Carlo program, yields $ \sigma (e^+e^- \rightarrow e^+e^- c\bar{c})_{\left〈\sqrt{s}\right〉 = 197 GeV} = 731 \pm 74_{stat} \pm 47_{syst} \pm 157_{extr}$ pb .

Notes: Abstract. The partial decay width $R_c$ of the Z into $c\bar c$ quark pair and the number of charm quarks $n_c$ per b decay are measured with the DELPHI detector at LEP 1. Particle identification provides clear $D^0$ , $D^+$ , $D_s^+$ and $\Lambda_c^+$ signatures. The charm hadron production rate is measured in each channel by a fit to the scaled energy, impact parameter information and the invariant mass spectrum. Two measurements of $R_c$ are presented, from the $D^{*+}$ production rate and from the overall charm counting, including strange charm baryon production, in $c\bar c$ events. The multiplicity $n_c$ , which includes hidden $c\bar c$ and strange charm baryon production, is inferred from the charm counting in $b\bar{b}$ events. The final results are $R_c = 0.1665 \pm 0.0095$ and $n_c = 1.166 \pm 0.086$ .

Notes: Abstract. In a kinematically complete setting, the $K^+ \to \pi^+ \pi^0 \pi^0$ decays of stopped $K^+$ were measured. In the frame work of the Weinberg polynomial expansion, the coefficients up to quadratic terms were deduced. The results are in good agreement with previous measurements and consistent with CP conservation expectations. The empirical $\Delta I=1/2$ rule is violated.

    Notes: Abstract. From an analysis of the ionisation energy loss of charged particles selected from a sample of 147926 ${\rm e}^+{\rm e}^- \!\!\rightarrow\! \tau^+\tau^-$ candidates recorded in the OPAL detector at ${\rm e}^+{\rm e}^-$ centre-of-mass energies near the ${\rm Z}^0$ resonance, we determine the branching ratios: \begin{eqnarray*} {\rm Br}(\tau^-\rightarrow \,\nu_\tau\,{\rm K}^-\pi^-\pi^+ (\pi^0)) & = & 0.343\pm0.073\pm0.031 \;\% \nonumber \\[1mm] {\rm Br}(\tau^-\rightarrow \,\nu_\tau\,{\rm K}^-\pi^-{\rm K}^+ (\pi^0)) & = & 0.159\pm0.053\pm0.020 \;\% , \nonumber \end{eqnarray*} where the $(\pi^0)$ notation refers to decay modes with or without an accompanying $\pi^0$ . The \[\tau^- \rightarrow \nu_\tau{\rm K}^-\pi^- \pi^+ (\pi^0)\] final states occurring through $\tau^- \rightarrow \nu_\tau{\rm K}^-{\rm K}^0_{\rm S} (\pi^0)$ are treated as background in this analysis. We also examine the resonant structure of $\tau^- \!\!\rightarrow\!\! \,\nu_\tau\,{\rm K}^-\pi^-\pi^+$ candidates. Under the assumption that the resonant structure is dominated by the K $_1$ resonances, we determine: \begin{eqnarray*} R & = & {{{\rm Br}(\tau^-\rightarrow \,\nu_\tau\,{\rm K}_1(1270))}\over { {\rm Br}(\tau^-\rightarrow \,\nu_\tau\,{\rm K}_1(1400)) + {\rm Br}(\tau^-\rightarrow \,\nu_\tau\,{\rm K}_1(1270))} } = 0.71 \pm 0.16 \pm 0.11 . \nonumber \end{eqnarray*} In all results, the first uncertainties are statistical and the second are systematic.

    Notes: Abstract. The branching ratio of the $\tau$ lepton to a neutral kaon meson is measured from a sample of approximately 200,000 $\tau$ decays recorded by the OPAL detector at centre-of-mass energies near the $\mathrm{Z}^0$ resonance. The measurement is based on two samples which identify one-prong $\tau$ decays with $\mathrm{K^0_L}$ and $\mathrm{K^0_JS}$ mesons. The combined branching rat ios are measured to be \begin{eqnarray*} B({\tau^- \rightarrow \pi^-{\overline{\mathrm{K}}{}^0} {\nu_\tau} } ) & = & {{(9.33\pm0.68\pm0.49})\times 10^{-3}} , \\ B({\tau^- \rightarrow \pi^-{\overline{\mathrm{K}}{}^0} \mbox{\small $[ \geq 1\pi^0]$}{\nu_\tau} } ) & = & {{(3.24\pm0.74\pm0.66})\times 10^{-3}} , \\ B({\tau^- \rightarrow {\mathrm{K}^-} {\mathrm{K}{}^0} [\geq 0\pi^0]{\nu_\tau} } ) & = & {{(3.30\pm0.55\pm0.39})\times 10^{-3}} , \end{eqnarray*} where the first error is statistica l and the second systematic.
