Notes: A filter using a transmission line formed by a cascade connection of inverted L-type networks has been developed to reject the distortion of the probe characteristics by rf (radio-frequency) noise. Each inverse L network consists of two coaxial cables with the same physical constant and length. The filter can remove discrete frequency components including the fundamental and harmonic components, the cut-off frequencies being determined by the distributed circuit constant and the length of the cables. By inserting different kinds of the network in cascade, many noise components associated with the rf frequency can be eliminated at the end section of the filter. Experiments have been performed in rf plasmas by inserting three kinds of inverted L networks with the frequency f (13.56 MHz), 2 f and 4f as the cut-off frequency. Distortion free probe characteristics have been obtained, from which accurate determination of plasma parameter such as the electron energy distribution is possible. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: New emission spectra have been observed from chemically produced excited oxygen. Evidence that the observed visible emission is due to oxygen dimer transitions is presented. Experimental results suggest that the observed oxygen dimer is stable O4 molecule rather than the usually observed Van der Waals-type dimolecular complex. The present system is discussed from the viewpoint of a new laser operating in the visible. The possibility of a similar oxygen-dimer laser operating in the near infrared is also discussed.

Notes: A new visible chemical laser analogous to excimer lasers in lasing principle has been studied. Laser oscillation has been observed in the red spectral range. To our knowledge this is the first demonstration of chemical laser oscillation in the visible spectral range.

Notes: A YAG laser Thomson scattering system has been developed to measure the time evolution of electron temperature (Te) and density (ne) profiles in the JT-60U. Presently this system provides Te and ne periodically every 100 ms (20 ms at the minimum) at 15 spatial channels. A six spectrum channel polychromator, which is a successive interference filter type, was designed to measure a wide Te range (20 eV–20 keV) by using five channels. The sixth channel is used for calibration by Rayleigh scattering. However, we also used the Rayleigh channel to measure Te and ne since the stray light level was very low. As a result, we were able to measure temperatures below 20 eV. The temperature of the silicon avalanche photodiode (APD) is stabilized by a Péltier element so that the gain is kept constant within ±0.5%. The stable performance of the APD enables accurate Te and ne measurement. During plasma operation, the electron temperature is measured over a wide range from the low temperature plasmas in the runaway plasma current tail generated by a killer pellet to the high temperatures of high performance negative shear plasmas. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Limiting molar conductances of the K+ and Cl− ions in heavy and light water have been determined at 5 °C as a function of pressure up to 1500 kgf cm−2 (1 kgf cm−2=0.9807×105 Pa) from the measured conductances and transference numbers of KCl. The residual friction coefficients (Δζ) are obtained for the cation and anion in D2O and H2O by using the determined limiting conductance and the bulk viscosity of solvent, and they are compared with the corresponding values predicted by applying the Hubbard–Onsager (HO) dielectric friction theory at various pressures below 1000 kgf cm−2. At atmospheric and high pressures, the solvent isotope and temperature effects on Δζ observed for the K+ ion are qualitatively in agreement with the theoretical prediction. However, the slightly positive pressure coefficients of Δζ(K+) are obtained in both solvents at 5 °C contrary to the theoretical prediction. Furthermore, Δζ(K+) in D2O at 5 °C is smaller than the theoretical one. These results suggest that another mechanism such as the passing through cavities one plays a more important role in ion migration of the K+ ion at lower temperatures and in D2O. On the other hand, the reverse solvent isotope and temperature effects on Δζ(Cl−), and the negative values of Δζ(Cl−) are found. These anomalies cannot be explained by the continuum theory.

Notes: Limiting molar conductances of the K+ and Cl− ions in heavy and light water have been determined at 25 °C as a function of pressure up to 2 kbar from the measured conductances and transference numbers of KCl. The residual friction coefficients (Δζ) are obtained for the cation and the anion in D2O and H2O by using the determined limiting conductance and the bulk viscosity of solvent and compared with the corresponding values predicted by applying the Hubbard–Onsager (HO) dielectric friction theory at various pressures below 1 kbar. At atmospheric and high pressures Δζ of the K+ ion in D2O is larger than that in H2O just as predicted by the HO theory, but Δζ of the Cl− ion in D2O is smaller than that in H2O on the contrary to the theoretical prediction. The reverse solvent isotope effect on Δζ(Cl−) suggests that a microscopic viscosity in the vicinity of the relatively large ion is smaller than the bulk viscosity used in the continuum theory.

Notes: This study was undertaken to test the hypothesis that deregulated expression of the angiogenic phenotype by tumor cells is due to loss or inactivation of an angiogenesis suppressor gene(s). We used the technique of somatic cell hybridization to test the ability of untreated or chemical carcinogen-initiated hamster pouch keratinocytes, when fused to squamous epithelial neoplasms, to suppress tumor angiogenic activity by assaying hybrid-conditioned media (CM) in the avascular cornea of rat eyes. A non-angiogenic keratinocyte line, CL-2, derived from cultures of untreated epithelium and 3 lines of carcinogen-initiated keratinocytes, PN3, 5, and 7, of varying angiogenic potential were fused, using polyethylene glycol, to 3 tumorigenic, potently angiogenic, drug-resistant, hamster Serum-free 48-h CM from hybrid clones was prepared and assayed for angiogenic activity in rat corneas. CM from 5 hybrid clones derived from normal × neoplastic keratinocytes failed to induce an angiogenic response in 28 of 29 (97%) corneas tested. In contrast, CM from 4 hybrid clones derived from fusions between carcinogen-initiated and tumor cells were potently angiogenic in 24 of 25 (96%) corneas tested. Two angiogenesis suppressed hybrids clones were propagated in culture for an extended period of time, to permit chromosome segregation, and were found to re-express the angiogenic phenotype. These result indicate that angiogenesis is a recessive trait in normal hamster keratinocytes which is regulated in trans in these hybrid cells. It would also appear that loss or inactivation of angiogenesis suppressor function occurs early in the neoplastic process.

Notes: We describe two patients with lesions clinically resembling pseudoxanthoma elasticum and histologically exhibiting focal elastosis. with normal-appearing elastic fibres in the mid- and deep dermis. We consider that these skin lesions represent a previously undescribed entity, whose pathogenesis appears to be related to the ageing process.
