Notes: With increasing age, human skeletal muscles gradually decrease in volume, mainly due to a reduced number of motor units and muscle fibers, and a reduced size of type 2 fibers. As a result, progressive weakening and impaired mobility occur. High-resistance strength training is beneficial, even in the very old, and could possibly reverse some of the detrimental effects of age-related weakness. The importance of exercise for older people affords an excellent opportunity for the medicine community as a major source of information and promotion of physical activity for this rapidly growing segment of the population. In this review, we summarize the current knowledge of the effects of aging on the human neuromuscular system, describe some of the major underlying mechanisms of the aging atrophy and focus on the importance of strength training to improve muscle function in older people.

Notes: Quality control measures for regionally purchased treatment chemicals in Severn Trent Water Ltd apply from the point of manufacture through to their arrival and acceptance on a water-treatment works. This approach involves a formalized examination of the control systems of treatment chemical suppliers and the introduction of standard documented acceptance procedures at each treatment works. These measures are intended to not only provide a high degree of reassurance to customers, but to ensure that staff of Severn Trent Water are purchasing and receiving cost-effective materials which are of an acceptable quality in terms of active constituents and background contaminants, before use in the treatment of water

Notes: To evaluate their potential to enhance fermentation performance, vegetable oils were investigated in a model tetracycline fermentation. With sucrose as the carbon source, the fermentation efficiency of Streptomyces aureofaciens (ATCC 10762) was enhanced by the inclusion in the medium of low levels of vegetable oil. Soybean and sunflower oils significantly improved the rate of sucrose consumption and tetracycline production suggesting that oil is an excellent adjuvant for improving fermentation productivity. For optimum benefit, the dosage level was critical. Little difference was observed between crude and refined oils. These data contribute to the assessment of industrially available fermentation feedstocks, and to the development of new feedstock products for specific fermentation applications.

Notes: Abstract Consumption of carrot by third-instar larvae of Sericesthis nigrolineata was measured under conditions of constant temperature. Consumption increased curvilinearly with increasing temperature between 4° and 30°. Larvae stopped feeding at the lower threshold, but at the upper threshold larval mortality prevented further feeding. Larval relative growth rate peaked at 17.5°, with zero growth at 5° and 32°, and the proportion of food converted to growth was greatest at 14° with a value of 11%. Late third-instar larvae lost weight but continued feeding, except for a short non-feeding period, before entering the prepupal stage. There was no evidence for a diapause by mature larvae.

Notes: Abstract Expression of the Shigella flexneri virulence gene regulon is controlled by multiple environmental signals acting through a regulatory cascade. The primary regulator is VirF, which is a positive regulator of the secondary regulatory gene virB and the structural gene icsA. The product of the virB gene in turn activates transcription of the genes coding for the invasion proteins, and for the type III secretion system which promotes export of the invasion proteins to the bacterial cell surface. The genes making up the regulon were studied in their native locations on the 230-kb virulence plasmid. Transcriptional control was detected at each level of the regulatory cascade. A gearing effect was detected upon thermal induction of transcription in the regulon, with the virF gene being induced by about two fold, virB by 10-fold and the structural genes by 100-fold. In addition, each gene studied displayed individual characteristics in its response to stimuli such as growth medium osmolarity, pH, variations in DNA superhelicity and the presence or absence of H-NS. The primary regulatory gene virF, displayed loose regulation under standard laboratory growth conditions. Regulation was tighter at the secondary regulator virB, while control of structural gene expression was tighter still. It is proposed that this regulatory pattern ensures that energetically wasteful expression of the structural genes under inappropriate conditions is avoided while allowing the regulatory genes to be expressed sufficiently under non-permissive conditions to ensure a rapid response to inducing conditions when these arise. Once induced, fine tuning of the response can be achieved through the different sensitivities of the individual regulon members to external stimuli.
