Abstract This paper describes an experiment in studying coordination in intelligent agent societies in terms of state-variable models. An overview of the modeling framework is first provided. The architectural foundation for the modeling approach is then described. This description is followed by a sample application of the methodology in analyzing a coordination scenario. A simulation of the system within the realm of the parameters of the framework is used to validate the approach. Variations of optimal coordination caused by differing conditions are described. The intention of this paper is to demonstrate principles for constructing models of intelligent agent societies in terms of state-variable descriptions with a view to analyzing optimal coordination.
