    Notes: Summary Changes in nitric oxide (NO) levels were determined in ischaemic acute renal failure in streptozotocin-induced diabetes mellitus rats. Two weeks after streptozotocin administration and immediately after right nephrectomy, the left renal artery was occluded for 60 min. Similar procedures were carried out in non-diabetic rats. The nitrite (NO2) + nitrate (NO3) levels were measured in plasma and urine. The effects of chronic oral supplementation with l-arginine and an NO synthase inhibitor (N-omega-nitro-l-arginine) were also studied in both diabetic and non-diabetic rats before and after renal artery clamping. The rats with diabetic acute renal failure had a much lower creatinine clearance (90 ± 22 μl · min−1· 100 g body weight −1, p 〈 0.005), and higher fractional excretion of sodium (FENa)% (10.90 ± 4.2, p 〈 0.001) and protein excretion (2078 ± 69 μg/ml creatinine clearance, p 〈 0.001) compared with the respective values in the non-diabetic groups (163 ± 30; 1.46 ± 86; 453.3 ± 31). The plasma and urine NO2 + NO3 levels were significantly higher in the untreated diabetic rats compared with the untreated normal rats before ischaemia (p 〈 0.001). The ischaemic acute renal failure in non-diabetic rats increased the plasma and urinary NO2 + NO3 excretion after ischaemia. The urinary excretion of these metabolites decreased significantly and their plasma levels remained unchanged in the ischaemic diabetic rats. The l-arginine administration resulted in a small but significantly higher creatinine clearance after clamping in the non-diabetic rats. The NO synthase inhibitor caused deterioration in renal function in all ischaemic and non-ischaemic groups. In summary, the greater vulnerability to ischaemia of the diabetic kidney seems to be associated with both impaired response to and impaired production of NO. [Diabetologia (1996) 39: 1036–1040]

    Notes: Abstract The presumed mandibular gland secretions from the workers and gamergates of two colonies of Streblognathus aethiopicus have been found to contain a homologous series of 3,5-dimethyl-2-alkylpyrazines (3,5-dimethyl-2-butylpyrazine, 1; 3,5-dimethyl-2-pentylpyrazine, 2; and 3,5-dimethyl-2-hexylpyrazine, 3). The structures of these compounds were determined from their mass spectra along with a comparison of their GC-FTIR spectra with those of all the isomers of a lower homolog. This is the first time that this combination of techniques has been applied to the study of insect pyrazines. The relative amounts and proportions of these compounds were different for gamergates and workers, with the latter containing 2–10 times more total pyrazines and having a higher proportion of 2 and 3. The possible significance of this finding is discussed.

    Notes: Abstract · Purpose: The Bayliss effect describes the reaction of smooth muscle cells in the arterial wall to changes in blood pressure. A rise in mean arterial blood pressure (MAP) causes an autoregulatory myogenic vessel constriction by smooth muscle cells in the arterial wall. The responsiveness of retinal vessels to changes in MAP were analyzed using the Retinal Vessel Analyzer (RVA). · Methods: Continuous measurement of retinal arterial vessels was performed in 40 healthy volunteers (age 18–56 years.) over a 9-min period. After a 3-min baseline measurement (phase I), isometric exercise caused a rise in MAP over the next 3 min (phase II). During the last 3 min (phase III) recovery was observed. Blood pressure and ECG were documented simultaneously throughout the experiment. · Results: Exercise caused a significant rise of 22.8 (±6.0) mmHg in MAP (phase II vs phase I: P〈0.001). Retinal arterioles showed 5.5% (±2.8%) vasoconstriction (P〈0.001). During phase III vessel diameters returned to normal, with no difference from phase I (P=0.179). · Conclusion: Noninvasive measurement and quantitative analysis of the Bayliss effect in human retinal vessels by means of the RVA is possible. Analysis of retinal arterial autoregulation may provide valuable insight into pathologic conditions such as diabetic or hypertensive retinopathy.
