Notes: Abstract: The fine-needle aspiration cytology (FNAC) findings in 13 cases of metastatic malignancies and lymphomas involving the breast are reported. The pre-FNAC clinical diagnoses in 6 of these cases were benign breast lesions, while in 3 cases the clinical differential diagnosis was either a benign or malignant primary breast lesion versus a metastatic malignancy. In 1 of the 13 cases the pre-FNAC diagnosis was uncertain and suggested a breast carcinoma versus a lymphoma, while in 3 cases the clinical impression was of a primary carcinoma of the breast. The type of neoplasms that were diagnosed by FNAC included 7 non-Hodgkins lymphomas, 3 malignant melanomas, an adenocarci-noma of the ovary, and one each of squamous cell carcinoma of the lung and cervix. In all 13 cases the unusual cytologic patterns of the tumors in the aspirates seen on the FNAC examination distinguished the lesion from that of primary breast carcinoma. A reliable FNAC diagnosis of mammary malignancies other than a primary carcinoma is important not only to avoid an unnecessary mastectomy but also to adopt a correct management utilizing an appropriate therapeutic intervention.

Notes: Abstract: Recently, in a review of fine-needle aspiration cytology of the breast that was done from January 1983 to June 1996, of the total of 18,695 cases, 331 aspirates had been submitted from women with breast mass(es) associated with pregnancy and lactation. As a result of this review it was noted that benign breast lesions were diagnosed in aspirates with minimal difficulty. In 10 (3.05%) of women in which the cytodiagnosis of carcinoma was made, the findings corresponded with subsequent cell blocks from the aspirate and tissue examination. All aspirates that were suboptimal (scanty, acellular) for cytodiagnosis were repeated as many as two to three times to minimize the chance of missing the abnormality. In cases with a persistent mass, the aspiration was repeated. With this protocol of follow-up, the effect on clinical decision making was significant in that the need of customary surgical biopsy was reduced to a bare minimum.

Notes: Quantum-deformed algebra (q-DA) of the O(4) dynamical symmetry of the U(4) group is studied in respect of the vibrational spectra of diatomic molecules. It is shown that, as in the case of the U(6) group for nuclei, the q-deformation parameter in Uq(4)&supuline;Oq(4) must also be complex for any meaningful gain in going from the classical to the q-deformed algebra. Application is made to the ground electronic state (X 1Σ+g) of the H2 molecule. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: The multibranched shikimic acid pathway was discovered as the biosynthetic route to the aromatic amino acids phenylalanine, tyrosine and tryptophan and a host of other secondary metabolites. An extensive body of work is available on the characterization of various enzymes of this pathway in order to understand the underlying mechanisms of aromatic amino acid biosynthesis and secondary metabolism in higher plants. In the present investigation, selective assays, based on feedback regulation patterns and divalent cation requirements, were used to monitor the isozyme profiles of two of the key regulatory enzymes of this pathway. 3-Deoxy- d-arabino heptulosonate-7-phosphate synthase (DAHP synthase/DS) (EC 4.1.2.15) and chorismate mutase (CM) (EC 5.4.99.4) have been characterized from different vegetative and reproductive organs of Brassica juncea cv. Pusa Bold. An attempt has also been made to investigate the effect of external factors, such as light and wounding on the regulation of these enzymes. The results reveal differential expression of DAHP synthase and CM in various organs of Brassica and an adaptability of plants to various stresses by up or down regulation of these enzymes.

Notes: [Auszug] The elusive and enigmatic origin of AIDS-associated Kaposi's sarcoma (AIDS-KS) makes it a complex tumor and therefore difficult to treat. Here we demonstrate that AIDS-KS cells express surface interleukin-4 (IL-4) receptors, and that IL-4 toxin (IL-4(38-37)-PE38KDEL) is specifically cytotoxic to ...

Notes: [Auszug] The vast majority of brain cancers (gliomas) express a receptor (R) for interleukin 13 (IL13). In order to achieve specific targeting of the IL13R in gliomas, we have mutagenized human (h) IL13. The mutation was made to alter IL13 interaction with the shared functional IL13/4 normal tissue ...

Notes: Piezoelectric ceramic/polymer composites were made by a fused deposition (FD) technique, which is a solid-freeform fabrication (or layered manufacturing) technique where three-dimensional (3-D) objects are built layer by layer from a computer-aided design (CAD) file on a computer-controlled fixtureless platform. Indirect and direct FD methods were used to fabricate lead zirconate titanate (PZT)/polymer composites. For the indirect method, a CAD file for the negative image of the final part was created. A polymer mold was made via FD using a thermoplastic filament, and composite formation was completed via a lost mold technique. In the direct FD method, a thermoplastic polymeric filament that was filled with 50–55 vol% of PZT powder was used to form a positive image of the desired structure. Three-dimensional honeycomb (“3-D honeycomb”) composites and “ladder” composites with 3-3 connectivity, which were formed via the FD technique, showed excellent electromechanical properties for transducer applications. In addition, the FD technique showed the ability to form composites with controlled phase periodicity, various volume fractions, and a variety of microstructures and macrostructures that are not possible with traditional composite-forming techniques.

Notes: Abstract Alkali-tolerant Aspergillus fischeri Fxn1 produced two extracellular xylanases. The major xylanase (Mr 31000) was purified to electrophoretic homogeneity by ammonium sulfate precipitation, anion exchange chromatography and preparatory PAGE. Xylose was the major hydrolysis product from oat spelt and birch wood xylans. It was completely free of cellulolytic activities. The optimum pH and temperature were 6.0 and 60 °C, respectively. pH stability ranged from 5 to 9.5 and the t1 / 2 at 50 °C was 490 min. It had a Km of 4.88 mg ml−1and a Vmax of 588 μmol min−1 mg−1. The activity was inhibited (95%) by AlCl3 (10 mM). This enzyme appears to be novel and will be useful for studies on the mechanism of hydrolysis of xylan by xylanolytic enzymes.
