    Notes: Abstract The flux density of a noise storm continuum is known to depend on importance parameters of the associated sunspot group, e.g., its total area A. A study of the continua at 287, 234, 113, and 64 MHz, however, reveals in case of the two cycles Nos. 20 and 21 that the radiation signatures of sunspot groups, with a value of A kept fixed, vary systematically with time indicating regular changes of relevant parameters of the overlying loop systems with the phase of the solar cycle. A trend of intense continua at high frequencies (for definition, cf. Figures 1, 2(b)) to occur preferably during the first activity maximum of a solar cycle has been obtained in either case suggesting a decrease of the emissivity of sunspot groups with time. Vice versa, intense continua at lower frequencies (for definition, cf. Figures 1, 2(b)) were mainly observed during the later phase of both cycles. The latter effect is shown to be attributed rather to a long-term variation of the spectral characteristics of the type-I continua than to an enhanced number of intense type-III continua. From the result obtained it follows that non-potential loops extending to great heights into the corona or developing at least conditions favourable for the generation of an intense type-I continuum even at the frequencies 〈 100 MHz tend to occur more frequently above sunspot groups during the later phase of a solar cycle than above the comparable groups of its first activity maximum. Furthermore, characteristic periods have been found for both cycles during which the emissivity, especially of the very large sunspot groups, was significantly diminished with reference to the comparable groups of the adjacent time intervals.

    Notes: Abstract Based on a total of 152 events, we studied the spectral parameters of the continuum component of isolated noise storms (Lantos, 1982) subdividing the data set according to flare-related and non-flare-related events. There were typical differences between both classes with regard to starting frequency and frequency extent. The flare-related events can mostly be attributed to loops rising into the corona with velocities as being known for transients of moderate velocity and erupting prominences. The non-flare-related events must evidently be ascribed to a broad variety of mass motions but on the average these mass motions have a lower outward drift velocity than those associated with the flare-related events.

    Notes: Abstract The February 5, 1986 flare-related radio continuum depression is studied, compared with other noise storm depression events and discussed in the framework of current type I storm models. The influence of flare plasma flow or shocks and of superthermal electrons on noise storm radiation is considered. The presence of fast drifting emission features just before and during the decrease of the intensity, the association between the depression onset and the microwave burst maximum, the simultaneous appearance of the intensity minimum over a broad spectral range as well as preflare evidence of an interconnection of the flare site and the noise storm source are arguments for a preference of the role of beams of superthermal electrons. We distinguish abrupt and slow depressions (Figure 5). The abrupt depressions are in agreement with Melrose's (1980) predictions. Slow depressions can only be understood by invoking the diffusion of super-thermal electrons through the magnetic field carrying the storm source.

    Notes: Abstract Intense noise storm continua at low frequencies are mostly observed in the later phase of solar cycles (Böhme, 1989). Radioheliographs may be needed to determine whether this effect is mainly caused by type I or type III continua. However, based on single-frequency records from the Tremsdorf Observatory a method to discriminate type I and type III continua even from polarization measurements was derived. Intense 40 MHz continua identified by spectral criteria as a type III continuum are more weakly polarized than type I continua. The increase in the number of intense continua at frequencies ≤ 64 MHz during the second, compared to the first, activity maximum of cycle No. 20 was due to an enhanced number of continua with a significant contribution of type I continuum. Relations between the parameters of the continua and the concurrent storm bursts confirm the validity of the above-mentioned ideas and may be useful to test models which try to explain the generation of type I and type III storms under common aspects.
