Notes: Abstract This paper discusses a mathematical model which is aimed at the interpretation of the effects by injections of chemically active gases into the ionosphere. A study is made of neutral-gas expansion processes as well as of processes associated with the formation of decreased plasma density regions, ionospheric ‘holes’. The spatial-temporal distribution of particles released during the transition to the diffusion regime is constructed using an approximate, analytic solution of the Boltzmann equation with the collision integral in the form of BGK, with proper allowance for gravitation and atmospheric inhomogeneity. The investigation of processes associated with the formation of ionospheric ‘holes’ is carried out using a numerical model of ionosphere-plasmasphere coupling, in which the transfer equations for charged components are integrated along geomagnetic field lines. The purpose of the model is to calculate the electron density and temperature, ion composition and emission of a disturbed region in the 6300 Å line at ionospheric and plasmaspheric heights.

Notes: Conclusions A method of production of corundum-graphite submerged nozzles with thickening in the slag belt has been developed and introduced. The life of these nozzles in casting of high-manganese types of steel is as high as 700–800 tonnes (four or five heats) under the conditions of casting in the slab continuous casting machines of Cherepovets Metallurgical Combine Converter Shop. The maximum life obtained has been 866 tonnes of steel. For the purpose of broadening the type range of steel cast with use of corundum-graphite submerged nozzles it is necessary to organize the production of such nozzles with the capability of delivery of inert gas to the channel. For effective use of submerged corundum-graphite nozzles it is necessary to provide the continuous casting machines with furnaces for preheating the nozzles to 1100–1200°C and manipulators for mechanized movement of them after preheating to the working position.

Notes: Conclusions With the aid of the method of averaging processes in regular media, on the assumption that the temperature field in the semiproduct of PM is homogeneous at all stages of the production of thin-walled articles of CM, we suggested averaged equations of equilibrium, and also constructive algorithms for calculating the effective moduli and defining relations of the material of the semiproduct of CM. On the basis of these equations and the boundary conditions corresponding to them, we showed that it is possible to determine the RTS in a finished product of CM, and also to predict the change of its shape after removal from the mandrel and cutting it up into separate elements. To determine the above-mentioned technological characteristics of thin-walled elements made of fibrous CM, it is necessary to know the physicomechanical characteristics of the fibers and of the PM before and after polymerization; the volume fraction of the reinforcing filler and of the PM during winding, and also the orientation of the reinforcement; the relative change of volume of the PM after heat treatment and cooling; the prestresses in the fibers in the process of winding. It should be noted that the obtained averaged equations make it possible to calculate only the components of the averaged RTS in products of CM. To determine the local stresses in PM and fibers at all stages of making the product, it would be necessary to investigate in detail the rheology of PM at different temperatures.
