    Notes: Four hundred and twenty surgical specimens from patients undergoing radical abdominal hysterectomy and complete pelvic lymphadenectomy for stage Ib, IIa or IIb cervical cancer underwent meticulous histologic and morphometric study. Complete processing of the extirpated lymphatic fatty tissue led to reproducible findings including the number of removed nodes, the number and size of tumor deposits in the nodes, and the location of the latter in the pelvis. An average of 32 nodes was removed per patient regardless of clinical size, tumor size, or stage. Thirty one per cent of patients with stage Ib disease had positive nodes as did 45% of those with stage IIb disease. The number of node metastases increased proportionally with the size of the primary tumor. In stage Ib 30% of the node metastases were smaller than 2 mm in diameter as were 21% of those in stage IIb. The size of the metastases was directly proportional to the size of the primary tumor. In patients with small tumors 43% of the nodes were smaller than 2 mm, as compared with 15% of those in patients with large tumors. The 5-year survival rate of patients with negative nodes was 89.3%. Survival dropped to 69.8% and 37.9% in patients with 1 or ≥ 4 positive nodes, respectively. The 5-year survival rate of patients with node metastases smaller than 2 mm and larger than 20 mm was 70% and 39%, respectively. In patients with identical numbers of positive nodes, survival decreased with increasing tumor size. In patients with tumors of a given size, the number of node metastases was an additional prognostic factor. The number of lymph nodes removed in a given patient is an objective measure of the thoroughness of a lymphadenectomy.

    Notes: Traditional nineteenth-century views of the relationship between science and Christianity have seen the two in a mortal conflict from which science emerged victorious over an obscurantist theology which sought to dominate the thinking of the new scientific class. Andrew Dickson White's A History of the Warfare of Science with Theology in Christendom (1896) represented a high point in such battlefield historiography. Recent writers have found the relationship to be more complex and less militaristic as a result of examining more closely the context in which the alleged battles took place. This paper will examine the case of English evangelist John Wesley (1703–1791), long a scapegoat of the warfare model. Wesley was often tarred with antiintellectualism during his lifetime and, in the ensuing two centuries, this argument has focused on his attitudes toward natural science. The effect has been to cast a leading religious figure of eighteenth-century England in the antiscience mold.

    Notes: Rhythmic changes were observed in the quantity of radiolarians and calpionellids preserved in an Upper Jurassic to Lower Cretaceous deep water succession in the Bakony Mountains of Hungary. Statistical analysis revealed that for short periods (order of 100 kyr) the correlation of the two planktonic groups is negative. Over longer time intervals definite trends are recognized, which can be explained by the combined effect of facies transition, evolution of the calpionellids and rhythmic environmental (climatic) changes. Spectral analysis and time span calculations indicate that orbital forcing in the Milankovitch frequency band influenced the observed changes.

    Notes: The forward scattering of cold neutrons in small-angle scattering experiments on macromolecules dissolved in mixtures of light and heavy water is predominantly determined by the large incoherent cross section of the hydrogen atoms leading to an isotropic background level. The probability per unit solid angle for forward scattering by samples rich in H2O is approximately equal to the fraction of the primary beam which has not been transmitted through the sample, divided by the full solid angle 4π. When using the camera D11 at the high flux reactor in Grenoble [Ibel (1976). J. Appl. Cryst. 9, 296–309] this simple relation is fulfilled within ±5% by a 1 mm thick sample of H2O at 281.8 K using neutrons of 1.0 nm wavelength. In D2O, the coherent cross section is of the same order as the incoherent one, and about one half of all those neutrons which had been removed from the primary beam are scattered into large angles. Our experimental results and the derived graphs allow us to determine the effective forward scattering per unit solid angle for any volume fraction of D2O in H2O/D2O mixtures around room temperature by a simple and accurate transmission experiment in conjunction with the measurement of the scattering of one single sample of H2O of 1 mm thickness, for neutrons of wavelengths from 0.45 to 1.0 nm.

    Notes: The present study presents the first small-angle neutron scattering experiment of lipid bilayers in excess water. The method of solvent contrast variation was applied. The variation of scattering intensity with the scattering angle could be analysed in terms of the Kratky–Porod model of scattering by quasi-two-dimensional systems. From this the bilayer thickness of unilamellar vesicles of dimyristoyllecithin was determined to be d = 41 ± 1 Å at 310 K. Several typical mixtures of different lecithins with varying chain lengths and of lecithin with phosphatidic acid were studied. By deuteration of one lipid component a very large contrast between segregated phases could be achieved. It was thus possible to distinguish clearly between homogeneous mixtures and mixtures which exhibit a heterogeneous lipid organization. In the latter case no intensity matching upon solvent contrast variation was possible. It is shown that phase boundaries may be determined very accurately by performing contrast variation experiments with at most two mixtures of different initial composition. The main advantage of the present method is that lateral phase separation may also be clearly studied in fluid states of the bilayer. From the average scattering-length densities one can determine the density of the lipid layers and thus the excess volumes of the mixtures. For lecithin mixtures positive excess volumes are observed.

    Notes: Summary Restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLP) typing of MHC-class II loci DRB, DQA1, DQB1, DQA2 and DPB1 was performed in 94 patients with seronegative juvenile chronic arthritis (JCA) and 184 random controls. Analysis of allele frequencies and MHC-class II 4-loci haplotypes indicate: (1) Susceptibility to JCA is more strongly associated with the HLA-DQ subregion than with the HLA-DR subregion, especially in early onset pauciarticular JCA (EOPA-JCA). (2) Haplotype and sequence analysis show two independent MHC-class II associations for susceptibility to EOPA-JCA, one located in DQA1, the other in DPB1. (3) Two RFLP defined patterns of the DQA1 locus, DQA1.5 (DQA1*0501) and DQA1.8 (DQA1*0401, *0601) are strongly associated with the disease. (4) Analysis of amino-acid (AA) sequences coded in exon 2 of DQA1 reveals an AA sequence of six AAs common to all three associated DQA1 alleles. This suggests a model that includes a functional role for HLA-DQ molecules in the pathogenesis of JCA.
