Notes: The Serpell Report on British Rail was greeted by hysteria from the Opposition benches and an apparently vote-catching cold shoulder from Mr Howell and his Cabinet colleagues. But Serpell's opponents have failed to demonstrate that the supposed benefits of under-used railway lines are worth their enormous costs, both in money and in opportunities and innovations foregone.

Notes: The gastrointestinal tract is a system that is very sensitive to stress-like conditions in mammals. Fish display physiological reactions to stress that are fundamentally similar to those of the‘General Adaptation Syndrome’ in higher vertebrates. An investigation was therefore undertaken to determine if morphological changes equivalent to those affecting the stomachs of mammals also occur in fish under stress.Conflict for social dominance served as the stressor. The unavoidable confrontation with a dominant fish in a tank proved to produce great stress for the subordinate eel. This was demonstrated by a number of physiological and haematological parameters.Stressed eels have shrunken stomachs, the consistency of which is translucent and soft. The mucous membrane folds flatten or disappear. The mucous epithelium atrophies and during this process numerous residual bodies appear. The cell-to-cell contact loosens. The gastric glands degenerate developing large intracellular cavities, vacuolated ER and swollen mitochondria. The connective tissue proliferates replacing the necrotic glands. The submucosal vessels contract, thereby disturbing the circulation. The consequences of the gastric atrophy (increased self-digestion, reduction of the immunological barrier, interference with protein digestion, endocrine function, etc.) are discussed.

Notes: Blood lysozyme activity was determined in rainbow trout that were stressed by handling and transport, or suffered from acute ammonia poisoning. To optimize the lysoplate assay, the pH dependence of the lysozyme activity was studied. For serum and kidney lysozyme, the pH optimum was 5.5 to 6.0. Ventilation frequency and plasma glucoseconcentration of the fish were used as stress indicators. Less severely stressful situations, such as 30 min of handling, brought about either a stimulation or a suppression of the lysozyme activity. Strong stressors, such as transport lasting 2 h or acute water pollution, reduced the lysozyme level significantly. The decrease of lysozyme activity due to handling and transport persisted for 24 h, but the activity returned to normal within 2 weeks following confrontation with the stressor.

Notes: Abstract We have isolated a stable slime-negative mutant, M7, from the wild-type Staphylococcus epidermidis RP62A by mitomycin mutagenesis. Besides its inability to produce slime in the test tube this mutant differed also in two other properties from its parent strain: it lacked the ability to accumulate on a surface, and it did not produce a 115 kDa and a 18 kDa extracellular protein. In all other tested properties such as initial adherence, growth rate, cell-wall composition, surface characteristics, DNA restriction profile, the presence of a 29 kb antibiotic resistance plasmid, and antimicrobial susceptibility profile, M7 was indistinguishable from its wild-type. The mutant is an important basis for further study of the pathogenesis of polymer-associated S. epidermidis infections.

Notes: Summary 1,2-sn-diglyceride monolayers exhibit unique and complex phase transitions as a function of surface pressure. The dynamical response of the layer on expanding the film has been investigated by computer simulations, (π-A) isotherms and grazing-incidence X-ray diffraction. Good agreement is found between the simulations and experiments. The Langmuir film undergoes two phase transitions occurring at 38.3 and 39.8 Å2/molecule. The transition at low surface density is associated with a tilt of ≈14° in the direction close to nearest neighbour. The first transition is unique for the diglyceride molecules and has not been observed for other amphiphilic molecules. It is driven by a competition of hydrophobic/hydrophilic and intra/intermolecular forces and can be pictured as a «seesaw» mechanism. Due to the close packing of the chains at high surface pressure, thesn-1 ester group aligns with the alkyl chain, and only thesn-2 ester group is favoured to lay at the aqueous interface. Hydrophilic forces attract thesn-1 ester group, but its motion towards the aqueous subphase is hindered by intra- and intermolecular chain interactions. On expansion, the intermolecular interaction decreases, and at the first transition, the intramolecular interaction between the two chains is strong enough to cause a «swelling» of the molecules. The diffraction pattern determined in the different mesophases reveals that the layer maintains its hexagonal structure up to the second phase. Concomitant with the tilt, the structure relaxed from a hexagonal to a distorted hexagonal lattice.

Notes: Summary The composition of the aerobic and anaerobic bacterial skin flora was investigated quantitatively and qualitatively in 25 patients with seborrheic eczema (SE) and in 35 healthy persons. In SE patients, the geometric mean count for propionibacteria in the pilosebaceous ducts of the forehead was reduced to a statistically significant extent in comparison with the control group. There was the same tendency with regard to the geometric mean count of the superficial anaerobic bacterial flora of the back, whereas the geometric mean counts of the coagulase-negative staphylococci were the same in the two groups. These results may explain earlier findings of a reduction of free fatty acids in the surface lipids in SE patients. According to the results of differentiation in 295 propionibacteria and 157 micrococcaceae, 7 biotypes and 10 phage types of propionibacteria which were so far unknown could be demonstrated. Significant differences between the groups with regard to the frequency of different biotypes, serotypes, and phage types could be demonstrated neither in propionibacteria nor in coagulase-negative staphylococci. The results of typing, however, showed that patients with SE displayed much more frequently several different propionibacterial species and types as well as several different micrococcal species and types than persons with healthy skin.

Notes: Abstract Radioacoustic sounding (RASS), normally used for temperature profiling, can also be applied for wind measurements. The RASS detects echoes of radar waves, which have been scattered at acoustic waves, and derives the sound velocity from the frequency shift. From the difference of sound velocities measured under different beam directions windprofiles can be determined. Ground clutter does not principally interfere with RASS echoes due to their big frequency shift. Therefore, RASS can supplement radar wind profilers at lower levels where clear-air echoes may be not detectable due to ground clutter. The upper measuring altitude of RASS is limited to a few thousand radar wavelengths by the sound absorption and by the drift of the focal spot of the RASS echo. A further alternative for low-level wind measurements is the Doppler sodar. It is less sensitive to ground clutter than radar, but the measuring height is also limited by sound absorption. It requires no frequency allocation and may therefore be the only choice at some locations. In Germany, Doppler sodars have been operating successfully on a routine basis for more than 10 years at several sites for environmental monitoring purposes.
