    Notes: Abstract Parents of 21 out of 30 children with male pseudohermaphroditism (MPH) opted for a male upbringing for their child and appropriate management was instituted. The phallic size in these 21 children varied from adequate to microphallus, although at least one externally visible testis was present in all cases. Nine children who were assigned a female gender were being reared as girls at home prior to medical consultation and 7 of them had a female-type vulvar outlet. This predominance of male gender assignment in MPH is in striking contrast to the Western experience. The reasons for this difference in India are discussed in the light of the Indian social and economic background.

    Notes: Abstract A $$3{\raise0.5ex\hbox{$\scriptstyle 1$}\kern-0.1em/\kern-0.15em\lower0.25ex\hbox{$\scriptstyle 2$}}$$ -year-old boy presented with recurrent episodes of severe abdominal pain, fever, and jaundice. During these episodes, his liver and gallbladder were enlarged and there was a left axillary soft-tissue swelling. Laparotomy revealed a retroperitoneal mass causing biliary obstruction. Biopsy of this mass and the axillary swelling was suggestive of Kimura's disease. Subsequently, the child developed a facioparotid mass typical of Kimura's disease. There was dramatic regression with steroids.

    Notes: Abstract Clonal propagation of Virginia Pine (Pinus virginiana Mill.) was achieved by organogenesis on cotyledon explants. The influence of several cytokinins and abscisic acid on adventitious shoot production from cotyledon explants was investigated. Benzyladenine was more effective in shoot induction than three other cytokinins tested. Benzyladenine (22.2 μM) in combination with naphthaleneacetic acid(0.05 μM) in a Gresshoff and Doy (1972) medium was found to increase shoot bud production. Abscisic acid (7.6 μM) in combination with benzyladenine and naphthaleneacetic acid enhanced shoot formation by an additional 65%. Root initiation was achieved with 0.5 strength Gresshoff and Doy media amended with naphthaleneacetic acid (1.3 μM), indole-3-butyric acid (1.2 μM) and benzyladenine (0.4 μM). Over 2400 plantlets from 2 families survived and were transferred to a greenhouse in preparation for field planting. After ten months, the maximum number of surviving plantlets/seed explant from these two sources was 57 for family ALPV-38 and 41 for family ALPV-78, respectively.

    Notes: Abstract Protoplasts were isolated from cotyledon, hypocotyl and mesophyll cells of Corchorus capsularis L., a major fibre crop, by one step enzyme digestion method. They were further cultured successfully on modified KM-8p (Kao and Michayluk, 1975) medium to form microcalli. The required cultural conditions could be used to achieve 34% to 78% plating efficiency, depending upon the source of protoplasts. Hypocotyl protoplasts gave the highest plating efficiency. On transfer to regeneration medium, somatic embryos developed at high frequency. The present success is a significant step forward in the development of meaningful plant cell culture methods for application in jute.

    Notes: Abstract Protoplasts were released from embryogenic suspension culture of Paspalum scrobiculatum and cultured in either liquid or semisolid KM medium supplemented with 2,4-D in the dark at 24°C with or without a feeder layer. Cell wall formation was observed in 75% of the plated protoplasts. Microcolonies developed after 10 d of culture, which in turn formed callus upon transfer to M-2 medium (Nayak and Sen, 1989). The highest plating effeciency (ca 7%) was obtained in thin-layer liquid culture. The macrocalli formed somatic embryos which regenerated to plantlets. The plantlets were grown to flowering plants upon transfer to soil.

    Notes: Abstract Shoot cultures of Camellia sinensis (L.) O. Kuntz var. T-78, an elite Darjeeling tea clone, were established from cotyledonary nodes and shoot tips of germinated seedlings as well as from nodal explants of field grown plants. Shoot multiplication rate ranged from 4x in nodal explants to 35x in cotyledonary nodes after 18 weeks of culture. Rooting was achieved in 80–90% micro-shoots by either placing them on an inductive medium for 10 d and then transferring shoots to hormone-free medium, or by treating micro-shoots with a chronic dose of IBA (500 mg/l) for 30–40 min. Rooted plants were established in soil under glasshouse condition at 60% frequency after hardening phase of 4–6 weeks. The regenerated plants show a constant chromosome number of 2n=30 and are morphologically true to type. This procedure can be applied for conservation and utilisation of an elite clone of Darjeeling tea.

    Notes: Abstract The existing experimental data [Ferry and Spear 1978; Perchuk and Lavrent'eva 1983] on Mg−Fe partitioning between garnet and biotite are disparate. The underlying assumption of ideal Mg−Fe exchange between the minerals has been examined on the basis of recently available thermochemical data. Using the updated mixing parameters for the pyrope-almandine asymmetric regular solution as inputs [Ganguly and Saxena 1984; Hackler and Wood 1984], thermodynamic analysis points to non-ideal mixing in the phlogopite-annite binary in the temperature range of 550°C–950°C. The non-ideality can be approximated by a temperature-independent, one constant Margules parameter. The retrieved values for enthalpy of mixing for Mg−Fe biotites and the standard state enthalpy and entropy changes of the exchange reaction were combined with existing thermochemical data on grossular-pyrope and grossular-almandine binaries to obtain geothermometric expressions for Mg−Fe fractionation between biotite and garnet.     Notes: Abstract A symmetrizer of the matrix A is a symmetric solution X that satisfies the matrix equation XA=A′X. An exact matrix symmetrizer is computed by obtaining a general algorithm and superimposing a modified multiple modulus residue arithmetic on this algorithm. A procedure based on computing a symmetrizer to obtain a symmetric matrix, called here an equivalent symmetric matrix, whose eigenvalues are the same as those of a given real nonsymmetric matrix is presented.
