Notes: Summary An organ culture system using collagen gel matrix (CGM) was modified and established successfully as a rapid and convenient method for determination of anti-cancer drug sensitivities. The cell viability of a tumor fragment was measured by the reduction of 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide (MTT) to a colored formazan product, which allowed for quantitative and simple analysis. The sensitivities of KK-47 bladder tumor from nude mice to various anti-cancer drugs tested corresponded closely to those determined in the originial CGM assay system using tritiated thymidine, which has a high clinical correlation. Our modified method can be used as a practical and highly reproducible chemosensitivity test in vitro.

Notes: In the paper we have developed a new formulation for solution of structural-acoustic coupling problems by boundary elements using the multiple reciprocity method. It is assumed that the structure is composed of plate components and is excited by the external or the internal noise source. The efficiency of the proposed formulation becomes especially remarkable if the boundary-value problem is to be solved repeatedly for different values of frequency. The accuracy of the numerical computations has been compared with the analytical solution in a test example.

Notes: Both the hypersingular and nearly singular integrals, which appear in the hypersingular boundary integralequations and integral representations of the secondary fields, respectively, are regularized by the application of the superposition principle. Two kinds of the non-singular formulations, namely, those with the strongly singular and weakly singular kernels, are presented in this paper. The formulations are given in terms of the relevant boundary quantities and the collocation at element junctions is possible. Two- and three-dimensional problems are analysed simultaneously in a unique way for either internal or external problems of the potential theory and elasticity.
