    Notes: A coupled equations approach based on a general artificial channel method is used to demonstrate two color laser coherent control of photopredissociation and photoionization in Cl2. Photopredissociation of the 1Πg states of Cl2 is suppressed by a two plus four photon interference process 2ω2=4ω4, whereas the photoionization is controlled by interference between a six photon transition and a four photon transition 6ω4=2ω2+2ω4 using the same 1Πg photopredissociation resonances as intermediates. Photopredissociation angular distributions illustrate the suppression of the corresponding transition in selective rotational states.

    Notes: α-bisaboloi and d-panthenol are used in many cosmetic preparations, respectively, for their anti-inflammatory and regenerating properties. Their quantitative determination was an important element of their evaluation in these emulsions. Their concentration has been determined by gas chromatographic techniques, using a flame ionization detector. In both cases, the internal standards have been chosen for their compatibility with the analysis of extracted substances.Owing to the complexity of the cosmetic formulations, a preliminary extraction of α-bisabolol and d-panthenol was necessary. For the two substances the preparative separation was based on a liquid–liquid extraction. After dissolving the emulsion in methanol and diluting it with an aqueous buffer solution α-bisabolol was then extracted by ethyl acetate and d-panthenol by ethyl formate.

    Notes: We extend our previous studies on control of dissociation and vibrational excitation of a diatomic molecule using chirped, intense, infrared laser pulses [Phys. Rev. Lett. 65, 2355 (1990)]. The present model includes molecular rotations and a realistic molecular dipole function. The results obtained from numerical integration of the time-dependent Schrödinger equation show a considerable sensitivity of dissociation probabilities to the initial rotational quantum number. Although rotational effects generally decrease the excitation efficiency compared to previous nonrotating molecule results, the dissociation probability induced by chirped pulses is still four to eight orders of magnitudes greater than that for monochromatic pulse dissociation.

    Notes: The two step photodissociation (1 1Σ+g→1 1Σ+u→1 1Πg) transition in Li2 is studied by a coupled equations method. The first transition is assumed weak and selects particular rovibrational states as intermediate states. The second transition is induced by a high intensity infrared laser. The photodissociation yield for different isotopes is investigated as well as the coherence effects in the excited intermediate states produced by the intense field. Stabilization of dressed molecular states and laser induced alignment effects are shown to occur in the photodissociation at high intensities of the second laser. The effect of the polarization of the lasers on the differential cross sections is also discussed.

    Notes: Listeria monocytogenes is a bacterial pathogen that multiplies within the cytosol of eukaryotic cells. To identify Listeria genes with preferentially intracellular expression (pic genes), a library of Tn917-lac Insertion mutants was screened for transcriptional fusions to lacZ with higher expression inside a macrophage-like cell line than in a rich broth medium. Five pic genes with up to 100-fold induction inside cells were identified. Three of them (purH, purD and pyrE) were involved in nucleotide biosynthesis. One was part of an operon encoding an ABC (ATP-binding cassette) transporter for arginine. The corresponding mutants were not affected in intracellular growth, cell-to-cell spread or virulence, except for the transporter mutant, whose LD50 after intravenous infection of mice was twofold higher than the wild-type. The fifth gene was plcA, a previously identified virulence gene that encodes a phosphatidylinositol-phospholipase C., and is cotranscribed with prfA, a gene encoding a pleiotropic transcriptional activator of known virulence genes. Although plcA expression is known to depend on PrfA, a prfA promoter–lacZ fusion was highly expressed both Inside and outside cells. Furthermore, in the presence of cellobiose, a disac-charide recently shown to repress plcA and hly expression, plcA and hly mRNA levels were dramatically reduced without any decrease in the monocistronic prfA mRNA levels. These results demonstrate that virulence gene activation does not depend only on prfA transcript accumulation.

    Notes: Abstract A finite element method in Cartesian coordinates in three dimensions is described to solve the time-dependent Schrödinger equation for H 2 + in the presence of time-dependent electromagnetic fields. The ionization rates, nonlinear optical polarizabilities and harmonic generation spectrum of H 2 + have been calculated for field directions parallel or perpendicular to the hydrogen molecule ion axis. Comparisons of the present numerical results with previously published calculations show that the finite element method reproduces perturbative results and can treat nonperturbativity arbitrary intense short pulses as it includes automatically both bound and continuum electronic states.
