    Notes: The retentive and stress characteristics of a magnetically retained partial overdenture were studied. The retentive properties were compared to those of an I-bar and Zest Anchor retained overdenture.The magnetically retained partial denture uniformly distributed stress to the supporting structures and exhibited significantly greater retention than that of the I-bar, but less than that of the Zest Anchor. Based on these observations, the magnetically retained denture should be considered as an option to be used instead of or in conjunction with other types of partial overdentures.

    Notes: A maxillary photoelastic model was constructed to determine the retention and force transmission characteristics of a bilateral distal extension base partial denture. Comparisons were made using palatal and labial I-bars. It was shown that there were no significant differences in retention and force transmission between palatal and labial I-bars. From a stress and retention standpoint, it may be concluded that the use of palatal I-bars is a viable alternative to the labial I-bars, especially where aesthetics is of primary concern.

    Notes: A three-dimensional photoelastic model was reproduced from a human skull. The insertions of the superficial and deep portions of the masseter muscle, the temporalis muscle, the medial pterygoid muscle and the temporalis fascia were simulated with leather bonded to the appropriate areas. The following loading conditions were employed: (i) all three muscles were bilaterally loaded without occlusal loads; (ii) all three muscles were bilaterally loaded while occlusal loads were simultaneously applied on the maxillary teeth. The stress freezing technique was used to lock the resulting stress patterns into the model skull. The stress trajectories were observed and photographed in a circular polariscope.The mandibular closing muscles and the occlusal loads produced stresses which progressed through the maxilla, following a nasal, a zygomatic and a pterygoid route, while stress concentrations were seen in the frontonasal, zygomaticomaxillary and the pterygopalatine sutures. In the malar bone area the stresses were seen to branch superiorly to the frontozygomatic suture and posteriorly along the zygomatic arch to the zygomaticotemporal suture and the temporal bone. Generally, the stresses were concentrated in those areas of the skull where architectural reinforcement had been demonstrated by other methods.

    Notes: The introduction of visible light polymerization in dentistry led to the development of a new generation of pit and fissure sealants. The purpose of this study was an overall evaluation of some in vitro characteristics of four new sealants (Delton LC, Helioseal, Pentra-Seal and Visioseal) in comparison with a chemically cured control (Delton). The results indicate that the monomer systems utilized in the new materials have already been used in dental polymer technology. The relatively new monomers TCDDMA/TCDMA were identified in one product. Camphoroquinone is used as a photoinitiator in all the light-cured systems which, after 40 s exposure, present better conversion than the control. The extent of oxygen inhibition was considerably reduced in the new sealants and the surface hardness was enhanced. Great differences were obtained in the penetration coefficient values; these, however, did not affect the enamel retention capacity of the materials tested. Consequently, light-cured sealants should be considered to be strongly compatible with the conventional chemically cured sealants from a laboratory aspect until more clinical evidence is available for their effectiveness in the prevention of pit and fissure decay.

    Notes: Summary The properties of pRP-c, a new vector for complementary DNA (cDNA) expression, are described. The vector contains the early region and replication origin of BK virus (BKV), a human papovavirus. Due to the presence of these BKV sequences, pRP-c replicates in human cells allowing amplification of inserted cDNAs. The promoter, intron and polyadenylation region for cDNA expression are separated by unique restriction sites and can therefore be individually excised and substituted with different transcription signals. Coding sequences of the bacterial genes for chloramphenicol-acetyl transferase (CAT) or neomycin phosphotransferase (neo) were inserted into the cDNA cloning site of pRP-c and expressed in human cells in transient assays or stable clones. In both cases expression of the inserted sequences was significantly more efficient than by using the integration vectors pSV2CAT and pSV2neo, demonstrating the advantages of episomal expression vectors in human cells. Possible uses of pRP-c to express viral and cellular cDNAs in human cells are discussed.

    Notes: Abstract ABRs have proved to be very accurate prognostic indicators in severe head injury, even when predictions are based on single ABR recordings. In this study we submitted 30 severely head-injured patients to serial ABR recordings (during the clinical course of posttraumatic coma) in order to verify whether the ABR prognostic power may depend on test timing in relation to the injury. 15 patients (50%) died, 5 (16.7%) remained vegetative, 2 (6.6%) severely disabled and 8 (26.7%) recovered. All recovered patients had normal ABR throughout clinical course, while severely disabled and vegetative patients showed at least transently ABR abnormalites (namely, an interpeak latency of waves V-I〉4.48 ms). Among dead patients, 8 showed steady and 3 transient ABR abnormalities during the clinical course, while 2 of 3 patients with normal ABR dead from extracranial complications. ABRs were significantly related to the outcome at any time, but gave more accurate prognostic indications on days 3–6 after the injury. The use of serial ABR recordings appeared to improve the outcome predictions in comparison with single ABR tests. Finally our result confirm the previously reported existance of a breakpoint between reversible brainstem dysfunction and irreversible brainstem damage defined by an IPL V-I of about 4.50 ms.

    Notes: Summary Analysis of factors determining replication of BK virus (BKV) episomal vectors in human cells showed that vector copy number was related to the level of BKV T antigen expression. T antigen was synthesized efficiently, as assessed by indirect immunofluorescence, in vector-transfected primary embryonic fibroblasts undergoing neoplastic transformation. Surprisingly, transfected continuous cell lines (143B, HeLa and KB), kept under biochemical selection or tested in transient assays, produced negligible amounts or no T antigen, revealed only by a sensitive ELISA test, suggesting that in these cells vector amplification was under the control of cellular factors. Presence or absence of BKV late region sequences, BKV strain, orientation of the inserted genes and presence or absence of selection were not relevant for vector replication. Type of biochemical selection, however, was important, since BKV vectors containing the thymidine kinase gene replicated better than those containing theneo gene. Despite great variability, vector copy number increased in transfected clones of adenovirus 5-transformed 293 cells, in the absence of immunofluorescence detectable T antigen. These cells express adenovirus immediate early proteins E 1 A and E 1 B which may directly or indirectly activate BKV origin of replication.
