Notes: Summary Measurements were made of induction of ornithine decarboxylase activity after painting mouse skin with 12-O-hexadecanoyl-16-hydroxyphorbol-13-acetate and its two epimeric 4-deoxy-analogs, 12-O-hexadecanoyl-4-deoxy-16-hydroxyphorbol-13-acetate and 12-O-hexadecanoyl-4-deoxy-4α-16-hydroxyphorbol-13-acetate. The inductive activities of HHPA and 4-deoxy-HHPA were similar, but 4-deoxy-4α-HHPA had no inductive activity. These findings on natural phorbol esters confirm that both the 4β-hydrogen and the 4β-hydroxyl in phorbol esters are essential for ODC-inducing activity. The interactions of 4-deoxy-HHPA and 4-deoxy-4α-HHPA with a possible receptor are discussed.

Description / Table of Contents: Summary The polarographic reduction of copper(II)-EGTA chelate in the absence and presence of lanthanum(III) ion was reinvestigated. In differential pulse polarography a peak of binuclear copper(II)-EGTA chelate appears when a solution is electrolysed containing copper(II) in higher concentration than EGTA. This peak is also observed, when lanthanum(III) ion is added to a solution containing an equimolar amount of copper(II) and EGTA. In this case, lanthanum(III) reacts with copper(II)-EGTA chelate to form a lanthanum(III)-EGTA complex. The liberated copper(II) ion combines with copper(II)-EGTA chelate and forms binuclear copper(II)-EGTA chelate. It is concluded that the substitution reduction is in accordance with the following CE mechanism: 2 CuL2−+La3+=Cu2L+LaL− Cu2L+Hg+2e=Cu(Hg)+CuL2−.

Description / Table of Contents: Summary When the copper(II)-EGTA complex is polarographically reduced without an excess of the ligand, strontium and barium ions give a new wave at a more positive potential. The limiting currents of the new waves are proportional to the strontium and barium ion concentrations, respectively. Magnesium ion shows only a very poorly developed wave. The reduction of copper(II)-EDTA chelate in the presence of alkaline earth metal ions is different; in this case the substitution reduction wave is only slightly separated from the main wave.
